Luggage

One of my bags has been damaged again and cannot be repaired. Airline has authorised replacement up to $168 value at Sydney Luggage Centre.

I have narrowed it down to either American Tourister Applite 2.0 71cm medium which is $168 or Antler Cyberlite II 70cm medium which is $182 or $14 out of pocket.

Does anyone have any bad experiences with either of these bags?

Luggage Direct are having another sale. The new bag range LOOKS good and with 3 bags for $ 200 !
The Delphin Cruise 3 luggage set looks quite good for that price.

JohnK we have the Antler Cyberlite II in purple. It is our newest case and has only had one trip of 6 weeks around asia - so not the most testing of trips for us. It held up well, no problems. I do like a case that has a "lid" opening, and not one of those cases that splits in half when you open it - I wont buy any more of those - they all end up with hinge problems IMO. I am taking the case on our next trip in August and if it fares well in the RTW I will buy the larger one as well.

Hope that is of some help ! :D

Just wondering how others feel about such case?

I'm with mrs.dr.ron...
You have to support one side with both hands to open and close a hard case that splits down the middle. I now only use our hard case once a year to take skiing - it fits all my gear including ski boots and the hard shell protects my helmet.
The other problem with hard cases is that they do not fit on hotel luggage racks when open. I much prefer a suitcase with a 'lid' that can prop open or close easily when I am not in the room.

Also with "split" cases, if you forget to get something out of the case - you have to put it up on the bed to open it, where as if you have a "lid" case you can just open it an rummage around ;) and as Fifa said you can do all this while the case is on the luggage rack. So easy access is important.

What size max do you recommend for train travel around Europe for overhead luggage storage and walking with to airbnb from train stations? 7 week leisure trip older experienced traveler

I have done bus over there and planes in USA..... Even 66cm seemed a struggle...... Is 55cm to small or worth sacrificing space for easier wheeling/carrying?

If it were me doing that trip with access to washing facilities, even if only a sink, I'd take the lightest biggest HLO case. For one thing, it will always be under your sight. Whether with or w/o wheels depends on how strong your back is and how far the station is.

If you do get a bag that is too big to check in (:lol:) make sure it is tall and skinny, as opposed to short and squat. That way you can wheel it through the train carriage if you need to. The aisles are just narrower than a standard suitcase.

What more do you need for a longer trip? I just keep using the laundry facilities, it doesn't bother me if I'm cycling the same 3-4 tops and shoes- i wouldn't meet anyone twice!

Went to Myer to look at Antler Cyberlite II. Not too impressed. Still trying to work out what luggage to get as a replacement from airline.

I did see Antler Helix though and it is quite nice. Myer has a 60% off sale until 01 August which brings price down to ~$120. Have a $100 Myer gift card and Myer Indooroopilly also takes Westfield gift cards. Free luggage.

Now for the replacement luggage from Sydney luggage centre.

Must he having a bad run.

My American Cruiser luggage has been damaged quite badly. Frame looks like it has collapsed. Reported to Qantas. May not be possible to be repaired. It'd be interesting to see what happens and what options I have regarding new luggage.

I would love to depart for bali in feb carrying my usual 7kilos of camera kit and nothing besides the clothes that board the Jetstar flight. Let's see.

Sampsonite luggage seems to polarise fellow AFFers, I am a fan and have a few of the Cosmolite spinners.

The one I use the most has done about 400 sectors in 4 to 4.5 years. I have had an axel in one wheel fail and Sampsonite sent me a complete replacement set. I contacted them during the week as the hinges have worn through - it is wear and tear in my opinion but I asked if it was covered by the warranty anyway. They advised it was not but they are sending me new hinges at no cost anyway.

I have only had good service from them and I am happy to give credit where I believe credit is due.

I arranged to take it to a Samsonite approved service centre where I was told it was not repairable...

The replacement was delivered while I was in DRW last week

While YMMV, I'm loving Samsonite, both their product and aftermarket service

I like Samsonite and Antler. Affordable but not tacky. I personally think spending too much on luggage is a bit of a waste. The same chap throws it all into the plane in first class or economy.

My relatively new luggage already has signs of wear and tear. Baggage handlers just don't care.

I'll keep claiming to get new luggage.
