Malaysian Airlines MH17 Crashes in Ukraine

Last news report the PM said he only knows about 23 Australians onboard but there could be more. Let's hope not.

Can someone who knows about this stuff comment on IFF and transponder codes? Would a mobile SAM truck be able to interpret this info ?

And if several Ukranian military flights had been attacked in the week prior; they might not have inclined to show correct info in their transponders, escalating the risk for all flights in the area.
Just quoting the 'experts' from television that whilst the missile was/is quite sophisticated it would not have IFF capabilities.

They seem to have settled back to the 27 number with suggestions that the 23 number was out of date information.

This just got very personal. Highly suspect a friend of my wife, who is a fellow member of a voluntary community organisation she is in was on board. Hoping the news is wrong :<(

Just...Why?

Rhetorical.

What a thing to wake up to. Thoughts go out to the family and friends of those on board :(

Wow, this is almost unbelievable. For most of us Aussies we only hear in the news of the instability in other parts if the world, so much good but still too many bad in this world.

Obviously friends and family of this onboard.... But I feel most of innocent people in MH, eg cabin crew, hope they can survive past this. While questions need to be asked, I think it's too early to point the finger about risk management.

From what I understand 23 confirmed but there could be as many as 27 according to the Dutch authorities.
I agree not much room for optimism here.

So sad for all those on board and their families and friends and just makes the current MH370 situation for MH even worse. Not sure if they will survive this.

so many questions... who knew what about the theft of the missiles and missile launcher. If the intelligence community knew, who was it shared with. Were airlines notified? why did airlines continue to fly over or anywhere near the zone?

there were other commercial airliners around at the time... but unfortunately only one was hit. I think they need to answer the question why they were there? (that 'everyone else' was doing it may not be an acceptable explanation)

OMG - I just cannot believe this - in no way can I get my mind around this - I am just totally numb. I am so close to tears - what an unimaginable tragedy - what on earth is our world coming to?

The pain that family and friends of pax and crew on board are feeling right now would be just unbearable. My heart also feels such pain for not only MH but all Malaysian citizens - I just cannot imagine how our country would feel had it been an Australian plane.

OMG - what is our world coming to?

Not good they are showing BPs and passports of the pax on TV.
Very disrespectful.

Very sad to hear this news. RIP for all people on board. Given SQ and AI are in close proximity I can only say that this is very bad luck to MH.

It looks like Flightradar24 has disabled it's playback function. Their servers must have taken some traffic today.

bad luck? we need to know more about who knew what. MH made the decision to be there at that time. we don't know what they knew about the risk.

Horrible news to wake up to - RIP to those onboard.

There is nothing else that can really be said.

It's a pity the guy who fired the SAM didn't use it before he pulled the trigger

This is so tragic! I have a workmate frantically trying to get details - her brother is currently flying home from Amsterdam, possibly on this flight. Very scary.

Some very important international AIDS doctors on board heading to Australia for a conference.

Innocent human beings.......so senseless

CNN discussing the use of transponders on aircraft - of which the MH flight should have been transponding that it was commercial. If the aircraft was stating it was civilian this should have been known to those firing the missile. Supposedly the black box will be able to show if the airline was stating it was civilian.
