NBN Discussion

Well currently I have nothing. No internet or telephone line. I am tethered to my mobile. I have for the last hour been on hold to Telstra. Haven’t even spoken to anyone yet. On hold.

When you first ring telstra say "disconnections". you will immediately be put through to a real person
Then ask for increase in mobile data in phone plan, or ask for a loan mobile broadband 4g wifi modem (with similar data to existing copper internet)to use while no internet. (a lot of NBN plans come with an NBN modem which ias 4g fallback)

I find chat 24/7 also helpful as you can keep a copy of the discussions.

Chat is good I agree but waiting waiting waiting for that connection too. Thankyou for your patience......If I use the mobile I’ll lose the chat function

Chat function is useless. They said it wasn’t their issue. They put me through on telephone to Tech. Except the person who rang wasn’t from Tech, they just said they were from accounts and then put me through to being on hold again. 15 minutes waiting. Chat function still open. So I told them all I want to do is report a fault. Maybe they ended up doing that but said it wasn’t their function again. Then I tried twitface. They are useless. Told me to ring the same number. To which I responded I only tweet as last resort and their suggestions - use a pay phone - unbelievable. All I want to do is report a fault.

Thankyou. Except I haven’t switched yet. I caught up with the NBN people as they are still in the area. When I said the street name they knew my next door neighbours house number. She is elderly. I suspect she has been able to report it as a priority. They were several streets away. I’m on hold again. This time I said ‘disconnected’.

Ok. Used disconnect and was answered. And very helpful person. Who said their phone system was down for 3 hours this morning. But there is definitely something going wrong here and it is NBN related. And we aren’t even connected up yet!

Yep. Disconnect worked for me.

Sounds like the same as every town & suburb has experienced when the preparation works are being undertaken. Happened here several months ago and now has settled down again. Was worsened here when a contractor dug up cables while doing roadworks. Doesn't make it right or easier but

While Telstra says its NBN's fault your contract is with Telstra and you should be able to get some relief via a free loan mobile 4g wifi broadband modem. If Telstra want to smack NBN thats their prerogative but dont do it for them, unless you want to.

Yep. But I work from home. Use online MYOB for accounts. Access our server. Pay our staff. Pay the Invoices. I can’t even access MYOB right now.

And Dont let them convert you to a internet modem with 4g failover on a new contract.
What you want need is a free loan mobile 4g modem.

NBNCo has decided that I am worthy of FTTC instead of FW. Apparently from Jan-Jun2019 which means not Jan-Jun2019

FTTN would not work because it’s a semi rural locality and the copper in the street is old (my neighbour emigrated from Italy after WW2) and current FW design specs has been shown to be underestimating contention.

The upgrade to FTTP (if I want it) will be via a 110m driveway on one side then under the driveway to the house which means $xx,xx_

Put a pole with power just inside your property. Terminate their connection at that point. Run Cat 6 beyond that.

Interestingly the DPU (distribution point unit) which converts the fibre signal to copper services 4 premises. So it’s essentially a nano-Node. The DPU may actually be down the street a bit as the area is semi rural 5 acres per premises.

In my area all the street is aerial copper strung along telegraph poles and most premises have aerial copper strung directly into the house. There are no underground ducts.

I wonder how FTTC is going to be deployed? I though NBNCo did not like aerial fibre?

I could do Cat 6 but as the copper on my premises is direct buried, I would have to trench the Cat 6. But yes a lot cheaper than Technology Choice. Or Wifi link with a Cisco.

Here is the NBNCo FTTC DPU :

Good idea. DIYseems a sensible solution. Maximum distance for cat 6 is about 100mtrs. May need a relay or switch half way to ensure good speed.

But, will they allow one to connect to their FTTC/P?
