NBN Discussion

I’m really pleased with our Non NBN set up using Optus modern service.

The same client of mine had that setup in their building, which was working great until the only tower it would pickup went down for 9 weeks while Optus waited on parts from Singapore.
The communication Gods really wanted to make it difficult for them to run a business!

Sounds like what I might go for when my Optus ADSL plan finishes in 12 months time (or even before).
What sort of cost is involved for this pls?
Optus mobile broadband
**Not the home wireless broadband product**

Get a wifi modem that takes a SIM card then a data sim will cost. Each carrier sells these modems. Optus modems arer generally not compatible with Telstra sims and Vica versa

There is a modem that is suggested and I think is $150. Our data plan is $53 a month and with that we have 200 gb a month. Obviously the mobiles also have their usual plans but you could probably go cheap data plans for those. All up 212 gb month. We can pull out the modem and plug it in anywhere there’s a mobile service in Oz.

Eventually the copper line will go - they say about 18 months after NBN install but if you don’t need a land line then who cares?

Currently up to 45mbs/3mbs down/up but can vary to 20/1.

Just now a Speedtest.

Netflix is faultless. I episode of a show is around 800mb download.

That’s our plan but we got a discount so $53 a month.

This is really useful info and I love the portability idea, although our mobiles have a sharing 65gig because of the bonuses that VF have given us. Having the portability gives the option of another ISP where VF is not available.
Our current adsl speed is a max of 10mbps for $60 although that does include unlimited download and a landline that we don't answer due to most calls being scammers.

You need to weigh up all the pros and cons. I was concerned about the data limit but so far we’ve used 17% in 18 days. It’s a normal pattern. I’m able to use VPN for work from home. The portability is a great bonus - just plug it in anywhere in Australia for internet where there is an Optus signal. There is a small travel modem you can buy but Optus said the larger modem is better for home. You can swap the sim over if you get both. No more need for modem to be plugged into the phone socket which for us means it’s out of our bedroom at last.

That's a good deal @Pushka, I pay $59.95 for 250Gb for a 25 download speed.

The speed totally surprised me. I’d have been happy with 10Gb which was double or triple what we were getting on TPG ADSL 2 for $69. Which was unlimited but with the rubbish speeds that was irrelevant.

Just received our NBN modem from Telstra. Apparently you install it and that indicates consent and they start the move, otherwise you return the modem.

Decisions decisions - do we take the plunge now, or see how the neighbours go first :)

I’m loving being free from NBN issues now! If your internet is currently ok I’d wait.

its not bad, although we have days when it goes like a snail and drives me bonkers.

How long did yours take to bed down once you made the switch?

We didn’t switch. I ended up getting a wifi service from Optus so no NBN for me. Our ADSL2 was rubbish once NBN became available and TPG refused to service it and blamed NBN saying that the lines had already been uninstalled which was bunk. So I reported them to the Tel Ombudsman for lack of service. I’m now getting speeds up to 40mbs (with TPG ADSL2 it was 1 mbs ) and for less cost than an NBN plan. We have a monitored burglar alarm and would have cost us to get that alarm fixed for NBN. Phoneline will be gone 18 months later but we will have moved on by then.

TPG seem the worst of the lot, We used to be with Westnet and then IINet took them over and then TPG. Service just went ever downwards with each takeover.

We switched to the NBN with Aussie Broadband. Were told the activation would be between 0900 and 1000 one morning.Happened at 0910 and have really had no problems since.
It seems that it either works seamlessly, or is extremely problematic. I know it was implemented quickly in sons apartment. And also in our place in Melbourne although the speeds are pretty rubbish compared with the wifi set up I’ve done at home.

Re the Ombudmans enquiry we currently have open, TPG are doing delaying tactics. I’ve asked them for an apology stating they were misleading in saying it was the fault of NBN (in August 2018) that was causing our issues. I emailed NBN just to check and received an almost immediate phone call from them with a follow up letter stating that they had not disabled our phone line. So TPGs response was to go off on a tangent and completely ignore that their advice was knowingly wrong and they had simply refused to send a tech out. Or try convince me to sign up for their NBN. I think it’s coming from an offshore person whose job it is to deal with TIO.
