New AFF Website

Is there a way to get the equivalent of the "Recent Activity" page without "Rated" and "Liked" activity?

Basically I just want to see new posts along with the first sentence or so.

Don't worry, even us Mods (read - me) that had a play on the test Xenforo system are having "withdrawal from the old AFF" (well I certainly am ;) ). I miss my "Subscribed Threads" and I'm still trying to find out how to do things, as I'm not IT-minded and didn't have a chance over the weekend to navigate around and explore. But then again, I remember coming across to the VBulletin version and thinking the sky was about to fall in - and I'm pretty sure there was another iteration before that. Patience Grasshoppers :D

You're always free to call tech support (me) and I'll walk you through it.

See it didn't take me long to find the previous "Subscribed Threads".

Go up to top RHS of page and hover on Flag
Click on "Alerts"
Scroll down the LHS list and click on "Watched Threads"
New page called "Unread Watched threads"

Ye of little faith :D

I'm only seeing messages that were posted to a person's wall, not their PMs. Not all people know the difference though and may have posted to the wall by accident.

I have a wall now? Umm, Where? :o

We are not using that to justify not making a new app. The reason an app did not launch at the same time was because all of our attention was on the main areas of the site. Moving forward, we will look at the options.

Thanks Sam, I must have misunderstood some of the comments made regarding the app and a possible replacement in due course- I certainly didn't mean to imply that users demand a new app in conjunction with the new site.

Honestly the new mobile site is prob good enough (sooo much better than the prev app) that a new app can wait IMHO.

Same place you always had it before, on your profile page. And yes, you can set the permissions so no one can post to it. I see there's already a lovely comment on it! :)

No worries, I just didn't want you to think that app development has been thrown out, as it has not.

Easiest way to access it is to click on someone's or your own avatar - and the Profile Page link on the popup.

You can also PM (New Conversation from here).

Note that you cannot (at least I can't find it) send a PM/Conversation, from the Profile page, you can only add to the 'wall' which is public.

Unread post titles and the username are bolded as below. The CSS is set as font-weight:bold

Instead can I suggest that the weight be set at 500? The font-family (Roboto) and weights (300,400,500) have been selected for this site.
Here is font-weight:500. It's still bold, but less in-your-face.

More Facebook-isation. samh004 and others, please spare a thought for us who don't do Facebook, or twitter for that matter. While that may be amusing, it is THIS site we are trying to re-learn, and references to other social media terminology doesn't help.

Is the 'profile post' page what is being referred to as a 'wall'?

Can anyone explain what the function/use of 'profile page' posts are? Sort of what otherwise might be a private message that the sender wants everyone to see?

Yes, except we’ve had the feature since vBulletin. Members have been confused by its function before, so there’s nothing new there.

As for why you’d use it over a Conversation (PM) – I have no idea. I’ve never got behind it, but do have posts dating back a few years you’ll be able to see.

Can confirm that it's working again on my end: can now see the 'signature' option in the main menu and have also successfully edited and updated my signature. Thanks for fixing so promptly! :)

(A note to anybody else who has permalinks to particular posts in their own signature: these are now 'broken' since the changeover as the format is different, so you may wish to generate a new permalink for the post you were linking to, and update your signature also.)

Thankfully, my signature links appear to have survived intact!

I wonder whether its possible to have a link on that Profile Page to Send Conversation/PM,
as given it is now easier to get to it may confuse some.

Also for others - on your Conversation/PM page, Leave is effectively Delete, although the default 'Accept" allows it to come back to life if someone else responds

@RooFlyer, exactly what is the function of Messages on your "Wall" (I think of it as "personal page") is tenuous - but it is somewhat in between a public post on a thread (viewable by all) and a Private Message [viewable only between sender and receiver(s)]. Because it is part of a members "personal page", few people probably knew about its existence and fewer probably used it.

Except we all knew about PMs in the old version and there are a lot of us who never posted or received posts on "profile pages.
Then you go and change name of PM to "Conversations".A lot of us had no idea that was PMs.Hence people posting to "walls" as they were unaware.

It was actually more commonly used than you think. Whether the members who used it even knew there was a difference, who knows?

As for us changing the language, that’s incorrect. Because this is a different product to the one we were using before they had different names for functions. If we had the choice we’d keep all the same language, however every future update would probably reset things to default language. So it’s just easier to post a guide and get accustomed to the new language used.

The guide explains a lot, but if it isn’t read then it can be confusing. The guide certainly wasn’t made for fun ;)

@drron, I share your frustrations with the changes (the older we get, the more resistant to change we can become) and the new Forum Guide is required reading for me over the next few weeks/months until I wrap my head around it. The change in terminology is regretted as @samh004 alluded to above. Hopefully the Guide will explain the changes and with time, recognition of the new terms will fall into place: Guide to Using Our Forum Software (XenForo).

Well, I like the idea of the wall. I can talk to myself there  because I suspect others won't go into it much. I think the conversation term will gradually become known as the previous PM system.

What I am doing a lot of is clicking into people's profile instead of that blue dot. Still. So for those whose profile I've clicked on since Saturday I am seriously not stalking you!

Apologies.. have not read about 10 pages in but can we choose our own theme or font/colour settings at all? I find the current one very bright with the next not that well defined making it harder to read for me personally vs the older grey background. Would be useful if we could set our own preferences? I can't see anything obvious in my scoot around?

No, as with the previous version of AFF, there is no way to change the font/colour settings. However, we are looking into a theme that will work better for "older eyes" ;)

There is no timeline for that though.
