New Amex statement credits

Just completed on 20 cards. Did most shopping in bulk on saturdays (ie alcohol, gift vouchers for anywhere I normally shop). I had planned school fees on shop small in $20 increments but my sons new school which is on the map doesn’t take Amex. I expect to land on 106 credits total due to 4 listed businesses not accepting Amex, and 1 business (for 2 shops) not having credit apply automatically. Have sent all queries re: these to Amex this morning and waiting on a reply. Now, off to see if Harvey Norman have started selling vpay again!

I got through all of mine but was a bit harder than I had expected. Mainly due to many newsagents no longer selling go cards.

In the end I found enough for 5 transactions x 8 cards. $800 of go card tops ups. Now to request a refund from TransLink.

Not really the best way of supporting local small businesses..

Just taking advantage. But to be fair would hardly be the only one. Unfortunately that sort of behaviour is what causes great promos to disappear.

Pretty happy with my haul. Offset the cost of the cats annual jab and the dogs yearly trim. A few vouchers for food places stashed away plus one from the nursery to put towards a lemon tree next year. Our freezer is choc full of fantastic meat. Managed a couple of meals out too, so good value without spending unnecessarily.

How do you figure that?
The newsagents got $800 worth of business they wouldn’t have otherwise got. They don’t pay the statement credits you know.

Doesn't the money go straight to Translink?

Don't get me wrong, I did some Go Card topping up for the daily commute, but I can't see how the retailer makes anything.

I'd imagine Translink pays a small commission to the retailer for selling the top up, but whether the retailer gets to keep the commission in the event of refunds or not would potentially make it a small loss for them if they didn't charge a card fee

Very unlikely the retailer would lose the commission I would think. They have still provided the service. And besides, how would TransLink know who to take the commission back from?

Suppose I put $20 on at shop A, $40 at Shop B, spend $30 on busses and trains, put another $10 on at self serve terminal at a train station and then request a $40 refund. Who loses the commission?

I’m very comfortable that I have supported these news agencies by giving them business that they wouldn’t have got. The ones that added a 2% surcharge even more so.

maccaisking, How did you send your queries to Amex?
Chat is down and I can't find an email address.

Just spoke with Amex who are organising that missing credit for me. The fact I received a credit with that merchant on a different card earlier this month seems to have helped my case.

Indeed. If it's an Amex-issued Amex there are sufficient other forms of contact, notwithstanding:-

With online chat down, and I have looked on several occasions over the last few days, the only other option appears to be calling them.

Given my query is about shops mall organisations not accepting Amex, I would prefer to email them my receipts.

There used to be a secure mail option on the website, but that appears to have disappeared.

If you would enlighten me with another option I would be most grateful.
