New Next Gen Card and Bag Tags have arrived!

The check-in kiosks can print you a baggage label, which you can attach and take to the injectors.
If baggage labels are still available why bother with an RFID tag? Safer? Faster?

Perhaps I am naive but I don't understand. What is wrong with the current baggage label system that is in use around the world that we have to move to an RFID tag that costs $50 to replace? No thanks....

Well technically in HKG while they still use the same labels, they are also imbedded with RFID chips as I presume it’s more accurate, which could possibly make things faster.

The reason QF is issuing these tags is so they seem to be on top of the technology pile, doing something first (although actually second, right ANZ?).

What a naive comment, the only reason QF are doing this is to reduce staff costs, after all Woolies have not bought self checkout in to be at the top of the pile either! If you have been in Aviation or IT long enough you would know that there are no prizes for first to market, only rewards for best to market or lower costs, or a combination of both.

Ordinarily I would have said that, and I think I did the other day in another thread where it was pointed out staff numbers were actually rising. So I chose the technology standpoint, but if they’re saving costs, they’re doing it in a strange way by hiring!!

It seems you can’t be right no matter what you say ;)

2. Many WP's actually use their NGCI tags as beer coasters and hanging them from their carry on is just a handy spot to have them when an emergency beer coaster needed arises,

Would have been nice if QF added a bottle opener on the back - would help in this situation. ;)

It's not only IT or Aviation, many industries such as manufacturing are upping the ante on IT development to reducing staff numbers therefore reducing cost.

Naive comments such as mentioned are based on lack of exposure to the situations we have to work within daily - at least a lot of us do.

LOL :)

I'll send a note to Qantas recommending such a feature - heck, I might even do design one!

I tried with a bottle of Crown and discovered it fits, you’d just hope QF designed the tags to be fairly resistant to moisture.

Purely rhetorical, but are you quite done attacking me today?

Generally there is no wrong or right on a discussion board;)

While QF staff numbers may be increasing, it does mean they are increasing in real terms as the airline grows, my hunch is the numbers of check in staff are either stagnant or declining while the number of people they serve per hour increases.

It's also about maintaining a veneer of being premium, and hence charge higher premium rates.

I don't have my Next Gen Bags & Tags yet.

My reassessment date is Dec 31 and I only have 610 Scs. I'll be doing a YUP in the US in a couple of weeks to make WP again so I guess they might be waiting to see if I drop back to SG. Does this sound reasonable or should I have them by now? I received an updated card with a chip in it a few months ago but not the one with the new logo.

I only received mine a few days ago (Tue). So they're still sending them out. Your expiry date is interesting - I do wonder if they are holding off until you renew, but from other comments, the lists were made up a while ago so I expect you would still receive the new package.

Ahh, depends how present the data :p

You can make it say whatever you want. :)

I put mine on my cabin bag, because i thought it might help identify me if it ever got misplaced. It's got my contact details on the back. call me a w*&nker if you want to.

Interesting comment from check-in staff in Dubbo last week when flying to Sydney (T2). I was asked to remove any next gen bag tags from my check-in bag (even stored INSIDE my check in) and put in my hand luggage. Apparently some bags have been arriving in Sydney from regional airports and being sent to destination from PREVIOUS itinerary where next gen bag tags were last used (ie on to Perth or wherever) even when only destined for Sydney.

That’s a good issue to bring up. I wouldn’t expect the itinerary stored on the tag each use has an expiry, and if you don’t start your next journey at an airport that can reprogram the tag I can see exactly the problem they’re talking about. Colossal screw up.

Oooh! Surely they must have thought of that issue and dealt with it in pre-trials... Then again, who knows!

Why on earth would you hang a NGCI tag from hand luggage? It has me stumped...!

Well noone can see it in the lounge when its attached to your check in baggage:p

Like yourself, I've decided the best place for mine is hung from my avatar:cool:. I still think they make great earrings...

Cheers skip

As one of the great philosophers of our time would say, Doh!

But I guess it shows that the tag could be put inside a pocket and still be read ok. ;)
