New Next Gen Card and Bag Tags have arrived!

You know, some of us check in our cabin bags from time to time, for a variety of reasons. I have no intention of removing the luggage tags when taking it as cabin baggage in fear of being called a W^*$&.

+1

I had this same conversation a week ago with drewbles (in person) and as he said - this is more to do with those attaching the RFID tags to bags (like laptop bags) that would never be checked.

In those cases I tend to agree.

I've attached the tags to 2 luggage bags, and I don't want to remove it when I fly other carriers, domestic or international. I just wonder, given that the process is manual, whether a baggage handler would see the tag and assume it was QF. That said, it seems that bags are going missing in the QF system, let alone other carriers.

Any insider comment on the case of the missing tags!!

Are they just one colour?

These were on bags that would never be checked in as luggage.

There's no problem putting them on carry ons that may be checked from time to time. That makes perfect sense. I just think people are funny if the put them on their LV bag, as was the situation in this case (small carry bag, not a checkable bag at all).

And QF should have stock of the old tags. I find them useful just to throw on all my luggage for ID.

Sorry folks, but I just don't get it. If it's acceptable in polite society to use an old tag on a carryon for ID purposes, why does using a new one for the selfsame purpose mark you out as a serial self-abuser? The only difference between the tags is the RFID capability, right? Well, that and the price for a replacement, apparently.

Quite right. I also don't get what the big deal is!

I think the big deal is that as a simple bag tag for carry-on they are clumsy and inferior to all other previous tags except in one area .... the bling factor. Though to be fair it does seem safer to place them on your carry-on rather than trust your checked luggage to the foibles of bleeding edge baggage systems.

Anyway - mine are still in their case and will remain so until I put them on fleabay. Unfortunately I removed the ribbon whilst retrieving the new card, so the raincoat brigade won't pay top dollar anymore. Pity.

I guess my point is that these tags are different from the old ones in that these are explicitly for checked luggage. They are designed to replace paper tags on checked bags, not identify your carryon bags.

People can of course use them how they will. Just knowing what they are designed for, it seems that people are just oblivious to their real purpose (most likely) or they love the DYKWIA factor ;)

Mine remain in their original packaging (with the paper band still fully in tact).

That's the very point. They are rather large and really not suitable for carry-on IMHO. So the only real reason to use them so would be to indicate to all and sundry (at least to those who would know) one's status. I have been guilty of this sort of thing in the past; doing things like putting cardboard BP in shirt pocket so "Platinum/ONEWORLD EMER" was prominent etc...

There should have been a warning on the outer packaging ... beware paper band ... :p (Forewarned, we slipped the band off SWMBO gold package so she could retrieve her PG card ...)

I did take particular interest at the LAX TBIT carousel this morning and there were a few NGCI tags on bags there. Didn't see any on carry on though ;) (that said I was through immigration at TBIT in only 10 mins.... Couldn't believe it!!)

I was watching how many platinums received First tags vs Business tags on their bags though (no first cabin on flight), and whilst I got ripped off and only given Business tags by the girl in CNS (I'm not the w$&@ker type that makes a fuss over this), I did notice most WPs had First tags allocated.

Just a comment on carry on tags, I have noticed that Canada-US Transborder flights insist that you have tags on your carry on bags.

I must have been one of those people you saw df. I was walking around looking for the new tags also.

I was also expecting a long wait also and was really surprised to get through so quick.

I even managed an OP on the way over which was great.

The one downside was that the QF desk in ABX didn't book my luggage through to LHR so now waiting for the BA bag drop to open.

Enjoy your trip

I think there's a very simple reason why a lot of people are using the NGCI tags with carry-ons... They just haven't read the documentation that the tags are only really useful for domestic checked bags. All they knew was, QF sent me some new tags because of NGCI or because my year is up. Many are just used to getting new tags each year.

The other lot will be those that occasionally check-in their carry-ons (and often unplanned).

Speaking for myself, I've 4 different bags that I can use for travel. 3 can be used as carry-on. You can bet that I'll forget to put the tag on while I pack. I'm too lazy to move my tags around for the specific bags that I'm using. My 4th bag (the proper suitcase) has only seen 1 or 2 domestic trips in the past 5 years that I've owned that bag, so the tag is unlikely to get on that either! If the tag does make it onto the suitcase, it's unlikely to be moved off...

I doubt there are really that many people using them just for the w****r factor.

QF don't send new bag tags each year. You get it when you change levels but thetas it. Using get PS tags either if you're already QP. I'd say they just have no idea and should really read their packets more closely.

..and even then, I believe its only if you go up a level.

Were you on QF 11??

If so congrats on the upgrade. I was waiting for the oversold cabin to give me the beep, but alas, some non status folks in the PE cabin were quite bemused when the champagne came round and realized that they had been upgraded. Nice for them. At least from the whY bulkhead I got to feel part of PE whilst the curtain was open ;)

I was on QF93 which came in about the same time as QF11.

I was very surprised to get the beep as it was my first time in a non whY Qantas seat. Especially nice after having to fly ABX-SYD-MEL-LAX because the SYD-LAX direct flight got canceled.

Now here is hoping that BA beep me on the flight to the UK tonight.... damn, one upgrade and now I'm getting greedy .

Ha, big trip for you then.

QF 93 can be a pain, just like 107, getting to TBIT at the same time as 18,000 Asian flights, all competing for the same 3 CBP officers :)

I'm sorry - are you saying NB got upgraded whilst you (with status) stayed in Y

I'd be pretty cheesed.

Yes :)

Whilst on a selfish level, a bit cheesed, of course.

But I always hold the attitude that you should expect to sit in the cabin that you have paid for.

I had the bulkhead seat which was fine, and when I checked in they blocked the middle seat.

But flight was so full that they needed the middle seat. More disappointed with that (again selfish).

It was more of a big light-hearted moment in the PE cabin, as a few pax obviously didn't notice their BP's ;)

I had a good flight, wasn't sandwiched in between the sumo olympic team, and currently drinking Tanqueray in the DFW AC, so happy enough :)

Perhaps they were bona fide PE customers (whether they knew they were booked there or not) and just didn't know that pre-take-off drinks come with the PE service. People only see this thing in J; perhaps they thought (mistakenly) they had been upgraded to J (although it might have dawned on them a bit later).

Don't forget that it's easy for us (even the NBs here) to know what we're getting in premium classes, but for those that don't fly as often at all, they may buy premium and still have absolutely no idea what to expect. So everything that's "expected" to us is a "surprise" for them. I know that feeling when I flew in QF J for the first time (oh so many years ago).

NBs clearing an upgrade? LOL! Perhaps there was a WP folded into the mix there somewhere. Then again, when was the last time the moon was blue?

I just dont fathom why Qantas would give op-ups to NB over WP/SG/PS. I guess they figure they've already got loyalty from the WP and a NB is one to be "won".:shock:

How do we really know they were NB's, did the OP check all their BPs, maybe they had OW status with very little exposure to QF and their fleet?
