I just dont fathom why Qantas would give op-ups to NB over WP/SG/PS. I guess they figure they've already got loyalty from the WP and a NB is one to be "won".:shock:
Op-ups are not always based on status. They are sometimes based on the easiest way to free up a group of seats in the lower cabin in order to arrange for a family/group to sit together. So sometimes its "where you are seated" that is more important than "who you are" when it comes to upgrades.

Oh I hear you both.....

Pretty sure they were all booked in Y, all NB or no status at all. It was a big discussion in the PE cabin, I was just eavesdropping ;).

It was a 380, got swapped to a 2-class, and then again to a 3 class at T-36. EF had PE all empty until it half filled (obviously with those who were originally booked PE). J was prefilled with original J and F pax, but still had capacity once they opened it up a few days out.
Day of flight J and PE had a good few seats left (even after the 5 hour points upgrade clearing) and they were clearly overselling Y, and premium inventory progressively dropped as you could see Y pax being bumped.

I was closely watching as I was obviously hoping to be the recipient.

In fairness to QF, it's possible some of the OpUps may have been to resolve party seating issues as Y was chockers.

Back on topic for a moment, all the checkin and lounge AAngels here in LOTFAP are loving and commenting on the new QF cards. They're getting quite excited when they see one !

NBs clearing an upgrade? LOL! Perhaps there was a WP folded into the mix there somewhere. Then again, when was the last time the moon was blue?

I'm pretty sure i saw a blue moon when i was clearing security earlier - those TSA people are getting pretty frisky .

How do we really know they were NB's, did the OP check all their BPs, maybe they had OW status with very little exposure to QF and their fleet?

Markis, see above post, but I share your general sentiment and only commented based on the conversation that took place between them.

Without stereotyping, but at least one group in the conversation were pretty clearly describing themselves as once a year flyers ;)

Anyway though, I seem to have started something when it was meant as a passing light-hearted observation rather than a whinge :)

But naturally, like everyone else here, I would never pass up a very appreciated OpUp when it occurs (directives from SWMBO notwithstanding ).

Apologies for hijacking the thread :o

Well my NGBTs (next gen bag tags) have come off my hand luggage and are now on the checked luggage that I occasionally use (long INT trips). I like having my WP tags on my hand luggage so it is easily identified if I forget something or if someone takes a liking to it at the security point.

The NGBTs are completely impractical for this purpose.

No worries, as NM points out its not always about status :oops:. I remember a colleague that got held up with delays and got to a SQ flight as it was closing, agent took forever to check them in and they asked why, the agent replied that she was looking for someone to upgrade so they could be allocated a seat, my colleague suggested they should get the upgrades and did, despite it being their first SQ flight.

You know, some of us check in our cabin bags from time to time, for a variety of reasons.
Not that I will be using the new bag tags anytime soon but you are quite correct. Sometimes I may carry scissors or razor blades and I need to check the carry-on bag.

So funny story...

My boss who is a CL member, only just got his tags yesterday - for the information of all, they are black (unless someone else has already bought this up).

I'm still waiting on my gold ones....

the card is black as well - we're going to try them out when we're in Sydney next week.

Cheers

Simsy

One month on, no Gold tags yet (or card). Silver tags sitting somewhere at home.

Doh!!

My old style WP tag broke off one of my bags somewhere between LAX and TPA :(. Only thing left was half the plastic holder thingy (technical term).

Oh well, have to move my Gold tag from carry on bag to checked bag.

Now I just need my WP NGCI tag for my carry on! ;)

Doesn't really seem to be any pattern to the distribution of the new cards/tags.

I'm a Gold and mine haven't arrived yet; the other FF in my house is Silver, and his arrived last week! Both of us are in BNE, but regularly fly to SYD.

Actually, I'm wondering if they are doing them alphabetically by surname .....

Of course there was a system, just because you can't work it out doesn't mean it can't exist ;) It's been told to more than a few people on here who asked the right person on here, politely, a few weeks ago....

That's all the hints I'm giving! And no of course it's not me!

Been skimming through the thread but a bit long to read the whole thing so sorry if this has been asked before.

If you print your own bag label (haven't received the new ones yet) is there priority/business labels available to stick to the label or not:confused: (not that those work anyways but makes it easier to identify my bag...)

The new baggage labels that are printed for the bag injectors have 'BUSINESS' written on them (in black from the laser printer). They are doing away with the old Pink/Orange tags by the looks of things.

End of the day, the new tags are meant to do it all, but it is still a way off with quite a few teething issues from reports around here.

I rarely check bags these days so not sure if they still come out with the actual priority they're meant to have (the bags with labels, not the Q tags).

Not quite right. You may not care but for a lot of people boarding passes are memorabilia. Just have a look around at how some people have a collection of boarding passes and proudly display them to anyone who is interested. I remember Anat0l and his huge 7 days of flying last year with about 33 flights.

Compare those boarding passes to the supermarket docket I got from DJ last night. Awful and not worth keeping and now I do not have a record of yesterday's flight other than an entry in an Excel file that is sitting on a hard disk in a dead computer.

Alas the supermarket docket boarding pass may itself be only a brief lifeform in the extinction process, and the only memorabilia will soon only be the image of square dots left on your mobile phone. Not that I keep boarding passes myself apart from those that dwell as bookmarks in unfinished books I have read in flight.
A lot has changed from my first flight on BOAC in 1969 (LHR - SYD) where not only did you get a boarding pass, but the Captain entered the flight details and signed passenger's log books in flight!

I think though that even the concept of the journey in those days nonscenic was different to today. Then a flight to SYD would have been a massive and rare undertaking. Now a lot of people consider it a regular occurrence (in fact for me I dont even consider it a long flight as the two legs are fairly short compared to SYD-LAX).

I think in time the first few years of trips on Virgin Galactic and when they come - trips on hyper sonic aircraft will be considered like your BOAC flight.

Personally I no longer need a reminder of my SYD-MEL flight - more often I would rather forget them (esp. last Friday).

yes, domestic flights in particular are, like the commute by public transport, generally a forgettable experience (apart from my 8th Nov MEL-SYD flight that circled Albury for 90 minutes before returning to MEL for the night on account of SYD being closed with thunderstorms). While we may be "seasoned" fliers, for many a flight is still a novel adventure and some would want to keep a memento of their experience. Baggage tags and boarding passes appear to soon no longer be a source of these mementos.
