Re: The totally off-topic thread

And from some of today's media interviews, it seems the leaders of various trade unions had a significant influence in the proceedings of the last 24 hours.

...and with union membership at very low levels it is sad that they still have influence over the rest of us.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

There is no indication that Gillard is in any way opposed to the mining tax. Labor just needed a better salesperson.

They don't need a better salesman they need a better idea.

Only because they got scared of losing power as they were well aware of how the successful the mining companies were going to be, based on their experience against workchoices ;)

Insert some muttering and swearing about Arbib and co.

They could start by adopting the Henry recommendations in natural form instead stuffing around with them.

Or follow the UK example increase GST and decrease company tax.

I find it amusing that a party with some fairly strong republican leanings thinks it is acceptable to just appoint a new PM - it's a bit like having a King or Queen again...

It just demonstrates that this party is willing to dump anything to hold onto power even the person that reinvented the external face of the party.

I can't believe that Jetstar are using this as their banner for their latest sale...

I'm surprised no one has chimed in yet with the Kent Brockman from The Simpsons reference (i.e. "I for one welcome...")

Re: The totally off-topic thread

The keyword is 'hope', and frankly I think that's a false indicator.

Any mining boss who thinks Gillard is going to be any easier to negotiate on the tax than Rudd better get their head fixed properly; any of them that thinks that Gillard will shelve the RSPT completely should go jump in the lake.

There have already been reports that she is going to consult with the industry, and that there will be changes to the proposed tax.

Gillard promises ministerial changes - Telco/ISP - Technology - News - iTnews.com.au

Also in her maiden press conference, Gillard flagged her intention to back down on Rudd's controversial mining taxes, announcing plans to "negotiate" with the industry and discontinue the Government's related advertising campaign.

#spill has triggered a Fail Whale on Twitter.
And #JuliaGillard is the top trend.

Amazing for a country of a wee 22 million to make such an impact on Twitterverse.

But apparently the Unions and the right wing have decided otherwise.
Amazing,at the beginning of the year Kevin looked likely to have at least 2-3 terms.
I must admit to being gobsmacked.:shock::shock::shock:
This is a joke and very sad.

The people voted for Kevin Rudd (love him or hate him) to lead the country not the puppet the power brokers want to lead the country. I was hoping we would have 2-3 terms of non-Liberal government but I think this latest move has knocked that idea on the head.

And oh yes, the people of NSW also voted for Morris Iemma not the 2 puppets that have replaced him without an election.

Tanner to quit at next election

:(:(:(

I won't be amused if he's been pushed, which is likely to be the case given his staunch support of Rudd. I've always had an enormous amount of respect for Tanner despite being on the opposite ends of the factional scale, as I believe he has the talent and the vision to lead the ALP and Australian Govt well into the future.

The spin docs are going to have to earn their money if they want to see Gillard as an ellected P.M.
Be interesting to see the results of the many Polls that will ask "Who will you vote for at the next ellection?"

Cheers Dee

They are singing from the Bob Carr hymn book.

When the party stinks, change the leader and tell the people they have changed. Only NSW have seen this so federal Labor would be hoping to fool the rest of the country into beleiving it. Also putting in a female (ie KK in NSW)diverts attention from the policies to the person and by putting in JG they are hoping to attract the disappionted Kev07 voters.

The only thing she could do to impress me is to call a snap election so we can get back to running the country and not running the party machine. The hours that must be wasted by these idiots on the factions is mind boggling.

He went to great lengths in his announcement to say that the events weren't linked. He said that he had planned a meeting with Rudd to tell him when the cough hit the fan.

He is a loss to the ALP and to the country.

In actual fact, we don't vote the PM in. His party does that. We may expect that he will get the job but there is no certainty, any more that there is for any spokeperson actually getting the same portfolio in the Government.

It differs only in the manner it is done from a PM stepping down (as many have done).

Well he says he hasn't been and like you would feel he is honest.
Watched Kevins press conference-obviously he is gutted.Even felt sorry for him.Said he was proud to bring fairness into Australian society, pity he couldn't get it into the ALP and Unions.
JohnK-I really didn't think Kevin would lose-I think Bob McMullen had summed up the electoral situation very well on Tuesday when he pointed out no government had lost with the polls as they were last week at this point in the electoral cycle.Even the bookies still had the ALP as favourites.Just goes to show again that the ALP is much better at political assassinations than the Libs who tend to argue for ages much to the delight of the press.

So long out of government that the party machine lacks the experience required to realise just how lily livered they have been by drawing the knifes at the first sign of a rocky road

For mine Julia is much more preferable than either rudd or Abbott. In fact before this I was even considering the possiblity of accepting a PM Abbott.
