Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I'm sure TheRealTMA will be able to give us all the details on this!
Talk about being on a string! :)

An interesting Italian is Montepulciano d'Abruzzo of course not to be confused with the great Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano [Sangiovese]. One of the largest exports from Italy especially in the late 20C and 21C arriving in Australia by the tanker full. Many are available at very cheap prices around $4-8 and make good quaffers. Cheaper ones are usualy drunk young and don't keep. In general it produces wines that are dry with soft tannins, good fruit with pepper and spice.

The DOC and DOCG ones can be very nice indeed. Haven't dunk many in Australia in recent years but had some very lovely examples of the DOCG in Italy around L'Aquilla from the better producers in Abruzzo. Some age well and can keep for 15-20 years with prices to match.

Had this lovely example from one of the best producers Emidio Pepe at Sextantio Albergo Diverso in Santo Stefano di Sessanio on my birthday trip last year. Was superb.

It's worth tracking down the better producers. GIYF.

Another Tassie Pinot for me tonight - 2012 Holm Oak

I've never had a Pinot from Holm Oak before, quite a nice wine

I've just tried this for the first time - and I'm impressed. Yet another unusual variety, and a well-made wine, from Marq (I do stress that I have no affiliation with them).

A box full of mixed wines ordered from them a couple of days ago arrived this morning and I couldn't resist trying this one tonight. I'm working my way through their portfolio and I continue to be really impressed.

According to the description in Jancis Robinson et al. 'Wine Grapes' it is often used to make sweet wine in France. But give me this drier expression any time! I think it would be a cracker with Asian food carrying a bit of chilli heat and spice.

JohnM,

Doing a Fraser Island trip in a couple of weeks and need a vinus experience to go with Srilankan style mudcrabs that we are hopefully going to procure from the "dark side" of the island (ie. the west). Obviously a good riesling will be on the agenda but do you think this petit manseng would be a good accompaniment and if so I can I get it to Qld in that timeframe?

I think so; certainly worth a try IMHO. But it's also very quaffable.

I would think ordered now you'd have it by mid next week. They use Aus Post. I'd follow up an internet order with an email or phone call to ensure prompt shipment. I would recommend trying the Vermentino, in particular, and the Fiano is pretty good, too. The serious Rose might also go quite nicely with something like you describe. But again, they are all good, slightly different pre-dinner drinking IMHO.

I tried a Pinot recommended by boomy yesterday. Whilst I could appreciate the quality, it didn't change my opinion of them.

2010 esseNZe Pinot "The Damkeeper".

OK, Steady, while we're on Tassie Pinot Noir, this one last night from one of the N Tas pioneers was a cracker.

Trying to pretend I don't have flu. Even with 'off' tastebuds it still tastes really good. A little young but nothing a few years wont fix (needed to check that it wasn't worth returning).

Had another glass of this tonight after it's been sitting in the bottle for two days. Wow. It's a BIG Cab. It's really opened up. Really looking forward to the next one.

Haven't tried mine yet. Looks like it's ok so will lay mine down for a while then.

Sitting down to watch MKR, found this in my rack:

having with grilled barramundi, peas and baked sweet potato.

As an award winning wine, was expecting something good.

I think it would have better had I decanted it. The nose was almost non-existent at the beginning.

Thankfully it opened up on the second glass (after dinner) but I really couldn't pick up much on the nose. Disappointing.

A little bit front of tongue and smooth across the back with very mild astringency. Could quite easily knock back the whole bottle in a sitting, particularly as I've just had cheese and apple with the second glass and almost look forward to having a third glass - but I'll wait until tomorrow night during our Moderator telephone hookup.

Had lunch today with my elder son at hip Bread In Common in Fremantle.

BinC1.jpg

Very good small plates food and excellent in-house baked bread.

Tried a couple of different wines made by a McLaren Vale winemaker who also makes wine in Corsica.

The spelling of the varieties must reflect Corsican dialect. Both were very good food wines.

Have to keep pushing outside the comfort zone ;).

Followed by a couple of palate-cleansing pints at Little Creatures. It was a good way to spend about 6 hours :).
