Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

I have been wondering how the wine assessors all use from 85 to 100 when a novice like myself would use between about zero and 75 for most offerings.

85-100 is a Halliday thing isn't it? Anything less than 85 doesn't get a rating.

I start with Champers to prepare for more Champers in the QF MEL F Lounge - hopefully there is something special in the decanter  but either way I will post in the nice wines thread - then some quality time with the family.

I've enjoyed some Champagne but the decanter is dry :(

Disappointed

Never seen that label before CE.

Hi cove - a simple article here around how some wine judges use the 100 point system and what each of the ratings mean.. here's a snippet
"A score of 85 – 89 equates to Bronze, being soundly made and balanced with good typicity and no discernible faults. A score of 90 – 94 equates to Silver and is a high quality wine with excellent balance and character. Scores of 95 and above are equivalent to Gold medals and are reserved for exemplary wines of the highest quality."

Robert Parker popularised the 100 point scale. Best explanation I've seen of it is this one https://www.cellartracker.com/content.asp?iContent=34 and pretty much reflects how I rate wine.

Some argue the point scale is better since with the 100 point system half of it isn't used. I think the same applied to the 20 point scale.

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

The mof_ Pinot Noirs have been getting a small roasting from us Fo lovers, especially the Pinot Noir affectionados. And so, it's with pleasure that I give a good thumbs up to a Fo Pinot Noir purchase (albeit from March, as I trundle through my sixth of a dozen):

Tomich Adelaide Hills Woodside Vineyard Pinot Noir I 777 2012

It's a complex wine, and difficult to pin down and pigeon hole (not unlike the fairer ladies, dare I say ... !!). On my recent Vivino post I said:

It's light bodied, highly scented, and on the sweet end of the very vast PN taste range. The intense red berries and slight herb (lavender) and vanilla aroma leads to a tight, acidic (in the middle of the palate) taste. After the acid dulls (very quickly), there's a silky smooth finish from the quality tannins. It's a mini roller coaster of a Pinot Noir. I like it, and glad I have 6 more of the dozen to go.

Vivino 3.5 stars

Word has it (from the esteemed Beefarmer who asked the winery why they offloaded it so cheap to the Fo) that the wine is slightly tinged in colour. If it is, then it's not affecting the taste experience 6 bottles in to the dozen. It's a great Fo purchase, and a very nice wine for its highly discounted Fo price.

So I am drinking this with my father-in-law, and he's not a huge fan. He doesn't like the acid in the middle, but he likes the smell. It just goes to show, one person's Giselle is another person's Plain Jane, especially when it comes to Pinot ...

Oliver's market their wine as being that blended into Grange. This is just becoming approachable with it's 15% alc. A McLaren Vale monster, good but not stellar. A little one dimensional.:oIMG_2639.jpg

Tonight's wine, it has restored my faith in Pinot but unfortunately confirmed that to get a good Pinot you have to be willing to be willing to donate a couple of lobsters. This wine was donated by my dad from his last trip to tassie, unfortunately he is no longer here to try it but being his 70th birthday I can think of no better way to thank him than drinking it. And how is it? Beautiful!!!!!

What a lovely tribute to your dad and story behind a wine. And what a stunning wine to remember him by. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

Weather is warming up in Perth. Some Thai food for dinner so cracked this:

2013 Leo Buring Riesling Leopold

Relatively intense nose. Initially some kerosene but that seems to have settled a little. Didn't dominate, just not quite as noticeable after 20 minutes. Really fragrant/perfumed. Talcum powder, lime, passionfruit.

Palate is fruit driver with a racy line of acid and a hint of fruit sweetness. Excellent length.

Drinking superbly right now and will be interesting to see how this ages. Why did I only buy 6?!?

92 points

Maybe they only use it before A380 flights out of MEL?

My experience was Sydney (I didnt think MEL had a decanter). Felt a bit stingy that it ran out so early in the day.

So its actually a 25 point scale?

Here is a quick breakdown of scores from the winecompanion website:

Most wines seem to fit in the 90-93 range.

To be fair - there are 4 points between 90-93, giving an average of just under 8000 wines per point. 87-89 only has three points and just under 9000 wines per point on average. So I guess the 'density' of wines per scoring point is falling between 87-89 and 90-93
