Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Alas I've had the same recent disappointing experience as you, DB, two bottles - one decanted for the full time, one not - and both lacking the depth I remember from your 08 :(

Took several bottles down to the local Italian tonight:
- 1 x Irvine Grand Merlot 2006
- 1 x Wolf Blass Grey Label McLaren Vale Shiraz 2010
- 1 x Maverick Twins Cabernet Blend 2013

For mine the merlot was fine - overwhelming plums on opening, fruity after an hour or so, and generally well integrated with very light tannins. It didn't blow my socks off, but I think the bottle I have was fine.

Maverick blend was all earth to start with, but opened nicely into a light blend after an hour or so. Great QPR

The Grey Label was nice, but I think it can do with a few more years - still a few rough edges that need to be smoothed out, but fruit coupled with Mclaren vale spice flavours, opened up nicely. For the $19.80/bot I paid for it, also great QPR.

Yalumba FSW8B Botrytis Viognier (2012)

Apricots and sunshine in a glass, irresistable. Dan M's seems the cheapest place to get hold of it, around $20/375ml.

I did a search which returned some results, including one from Cracka, which I followed and beheld the following:

Product Unavailable
But we do have...
2008 Sevenhill Vintage Touriga

<irony_alert>Oh yeah, that'll do nicely as a substitute! </irony_alert>

I wonder if Cracka have caught onto the fact that they've become a parody of themselves?

Not red or white, so perhaps inappropriate for this thread.

I'm not usually a huge fan of Coldstream Hills Chardonnays (find them too "oakey") but this one is good :)

Good report. Haven't had one for a while but like many of the Yarra Valleys, very nice generally. They used to have three? From different vineyards as I remember. Were interesting to compare terroir with same production facilities.

Yep.. bought their Amphitheatre Wine Club
deal that had the following in it:

So far I have tried the normal Coldstream Chardy and it was as I remembered... and this one "The Rising Vineyard".
If I'd known you were coming over TMA I would have used the Riedels ;) :)

I saw this also - where is the cheapest place to pick them up ?

Usually Dans, or sometimes the Red airline.

You can actually pick up at a good rate direct if you are a member and buy a lot. I think we get 20% off and free shipping. Occasionally they do good CD deals as well. Had a long lunch with Vanya last year - she was fantastic. So much respect for her as a winemaker and human.

I get 5% as a start, 10% on a dozen and 15% on 2 dozen with free freight after 12

A couple of nice wines on Monday..
Heathcote Estate 2006 quite refined and softening nicely...not as good as the 08 or 10
St Halletts Old Block 2009......a wow from me....opened up a bit tight but mellowed beautifully, big powerful and luscious.....

2003 Peel Estate Shiraz into the decanter while some slow cooked goat roasts. Glad I decided to use the Durand on this. Cork was in excellent condition, but really stuck in. Took a fair bit of force to loosen. Would have fallen apart I think, with just a corkscrew.
