Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

No speech, I hovered on the shadowy margins of the room trying to safeguard the little hearing I have left watching the mirror ball reflecting all our petty lives, another good Bukowski quote "An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way." there are quite a few wine reviewers who could benefit from that observation...

On the subject of Hank, I'm sure he'd have been licking his lips at some of the bathtub standard plonk on sale on VM at the moment.

Yes those thin lizard-lips Warlock, I think Buk actually had some degree of finesse in matters of the grape but would require a bathtub to quench his insatiable thirst-maybe VM has him covered!

My favourite Pinot delivery just arrived.

I think it will be rude not to open one tonight ;)

Even ruder not to share :)

Opened us this brute on Saturday evening to much applause on my senses, the colour / legs / nose are bang on for a winter evening with meaty pizza

To be honest I do struggle with the Reserve Cab tho - its a 14 - its so big (HEAVY the better half described) - 2 days later yeah awesome but thats not always possible

Am contemplating sitting out the Cabs from now on in the allocation, I like my grunge Mudhoney not The Melvins - a bit of humour mixed in with the dirty fuzz suit me better, this sits in Mollydooker territory, of which I have become less enamoured.

Opening a NOON ECLIPSE tho is an amazing wine (Superfuzz Bigmuff - the masterpiece) - looking forward to the November release

I like your effects-driven descriptions, Big Muff was so good John Martyn sang a song about it (though The Slickers covered it originally)...now I'll have to seek out the Eclipse it sounds right up my back alley...

Noons are available in November only around Melb cup time and you will have to get on mailing list by asking, some lucky enough to get on early, others well wait some time on waiting list to be on mailing list.

Sounds like a full-throttle red, any price indicator? (couldn't glean all that much off the interweb)...

Who was that Japanese cult leader who enjoyed his bath water, the blind sarin gas dude?

Shoko Asahara (not that I knew that off the top of my head!) and apparently his followers drank both his bathwater and blood, different strokes....

Noon shiraz is $90 up to $150. Can be a little cheaper Langtons auction. Takes years to get on mailing list. 2006 is the one most people chase. For prices try melbourne winehouse or Langtons price guide. Cheers

Have been offline for what seems a month, but been keeping up the quaffers at home whilst I wrestle with recalcitrant neighbours in a legal dispute and family health issues

Looks like the Waverick GSM has been popular lately (different vintages IIRC). Was very impressed with the Penley Estate - might head to DM and see prices...

I had a penley estate phoenix in the last few months, about a 2005 or close and it was stunning. Doesn't mean they all will be, but the stunners you remember for years. Because you marry them(sic).

Thanks Rug, makes me feel a little out of my depth I must say. Might have to forgo the wait on the mailing list, there's too much wine out there begging to be drunk right now!

Noons generally around $30 - $35 from memory, some at $25 some a bit higher.

These guys seem to have a good range on offer... https://www.cellarit.com.au/winery-noon-winery.aspx

Its worth getting on the waiting list regardless - may take a couple of years but worth it to buy the Shiraz and Eclipse for $30ea, they also offer a $12 quaffer which is great value, and the rose is always smashed in summer - great drop

Thanks for elucidating Kohen, I've been drinking wine for a very long time but am still new to how various entities like Noon operate...

The grenache is around that price, The reserve shiraz is as stated previously. There are some on auction at the moment at Langtons. Cheers

They dont have much of a range showing at the moment. Cheers

This may sound a bit crazy. But after sampling some of the finest Cab Sauvs and Cab Blends our esteemed Coonawarra has to offer at the recent Coonawarra Roadshow in Sydney, there was a wine that somehow stood out on the red carpet of superstar wines tasted that night:

the Balnaves Coonawarra Chardonnay 2013

image.jpgimage.jpeg
So much so. AC and I ordered a 6 pack to share. Maybe it was Doug Balnaves who charmed me on the night. Who knows. But as you will see the Coonawarra does a bloody good Chardonnay, even if it's far from its prime:

"When a White stands out at a Coonawarra tasting, when sampling over 30 of their biggest and finest Cab Sauvs, including the legendary Petaluma Cab of 96, you know you are on to a good one. It's a 13, but it's only just been released given the extensive winemaking treatment it's received.

There's a strong floral and nutty nose. And a strong acid line that leads through the medium-bodied palate into a very creamy, lingering finish. As grapefruit, lychee, lime, apple blossom and white flowers lead to a strong lime, nutty and creamy finish. It has a great intensity about its build and flavour profile leading me to suggest that it's at least 5 years from its drinking window. It's very promising. Pair with spicy Asian food - it's big enough to compliment it.

A Wozza 93/100 (3.8/5.0) from me. With more sure to come with a bit of bottle age ...

I was going to lead in with the fact that this thread seems a bit neglected, however Wozza has chimed in tonight already. Some additional things drunk at the AC household:

IMG_0032_small.jpg

Balnaves The Tally Cabernet Reserve 2005 - cassis, floral and spice notes. On the palate blackcurrants, vanillin oak, and subtle spices. Tannic structure there, but not overwhelming. This is just starting to hit its strides IMHO. Great Coonawarra Cabernet.

IMG_0033_small.jpg

d'Arenberg Coppermine Road 2008 - cassis notes. The flavour is still of huge dark fruits, but with undertones of spice and chocolate. Tannins are medium - slightly grippy. Not sure how this is going to evolve, but a nice change from drinking dusty-boot cabernet, and raw under-developed stuff. Have a bunch more, so will have to see how this goes.

what you are saying is that a twenty eight bucker white from nicks in east Doncaster to you tasted better, and left a better impression than some eighty bucker big reds? Big call indeed, but it is obvious this is a beauty for the long haul.

because of this, it probably wil not be unusual to see wines of the shows being white. I think a couple of Riesling references today talked of a Canberra Riesling, 97 points JH, that I think was the wine of the show. There you go. Only recently, pinots have been killing them. Of course, the old vat 1's have had a good run. All quite interesting really. is good, is good.

There were plenty of amazing cabernets there - I snaffled a magnum bottle of the '96 Petaluma. Whilst there are a few places that do Chardonnay down in Coonawarra (Petaluma spings to mind), this was just a bit different.
The other ones that stuck in my mind where the Katnook Caledonian, which is Shiraz/Cab, with a 5% Petit Verdot + 5% Tannat, and the Parker 95 Block, which from memory is 66% cab/33% Petit Verdot.
