Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I am excited the Penfolds 707 is back on sale. I talked with the wine maker at a Grange re-corking clinic and the only reason that it had stopped production was the lack of suitable top quality grapes in those years.
I still have about 3 dozen Grange and if I only drink one a year I would get a letter from the Queen before they are all gone so I had better up the "use by rate". Lizzie would be about 120 years old or more.

My Vintec turned up out of the blue today. No previous email or call to advise of delivery apart from the general update email sent on 02 Oct. Just got a call from the driver when the truck was parked at our gate.

Mine came over the weekend, apparently it was one of 16000

I was speaking to the Vintec bloke at the Good Food and Wine Show on Friday and I think he said they sold 12,000(?) units through the promo (the details are a bit hazy for me by that point of the afternoon however).

My reference number was in the 8000s and it was delivered last week. I think I'd buy another Kitchener before another Vintec though.

I came across this quote the other day and think it's perfect for this thread. I think we have a few members who are following it to the letter, enjoy :)

"Bottles of wine aren't like paintings. At some point you have to consume them. The object in life is to die with no bottles of wine in your cellar. To drink your last bottle of wine and go to sleep that night and not wake up."

Jay McInerney

Its a great thought, but unfortunately with my forward planning, I don't think I'll be able to achieve this, and will depart this world leaving a wine legacy of some 45-50 dozen. Still it should make for a good wake. I'm trying to cut back, but have been back home 2 weeks and have increased the inventory by another 2 doz.

BTW for the Chardy afficionados Graysonline have a mystery deal of 2012 Margaret River 6 pack for $119.94. JH rates it at 94 points, 13.5% alc. and its 50% off the RRP of $40. JH has pronounced the winery as his Winery of the Year, so I think its Brookland Valley Estate (2009), rather than Larry Cherubino (2011).

Seems like value?

An even more ghastly outcome for me would be develop 'a condition' where you have to stop drinking red wine well before you expect to peg it.

Arrrggghh! 30 dozen or so of top shelf reds planned for my twilight years ... wasted! (on some-one else... )

Maybe slightly off topic, but recently enjoyed a nice 2008 Wynns red. Wanted another bottle and saw my local Dan's had one left, so did a click and collect order. While I was waiting I noticed they had a 2008 in the display under the counter which was a little concerning, so I checked my box when they bought it out...2009! Pointed out the mix up and they declared "but we couldn't find it!". Pointed out it was under the counter....and was given the bottle. The 2009 is worth a couple more $$, but the guy serving agreed that the 2008 was a fantastic drop. Someone less honest might have taken the 2009 and then gone back for the 08, but I wanted to get what I was actually after.

I'll hold your hand to make you feel better while I slurp your wine 'ol buddy ;):p:mrgreen:.

Over the years I've been lucky enough to enjoy a few wines with a neighbour. These people are elderly .... their cellar is looking worse for wear these days - they always talk about the depleted look/stock. It's an extremely mighty effort to make a 4,000+ cellar look depleted!

They have worked very hard over the years investing time and money getting their cellar the way they wanted .... time has rolled on and they're well and truly in the enjoyment phase - they have left the best for last! Amazing wines in their cellar and I get a little excited every time I get a shout to come over.
Their names aren't Gordon and Judy, by any chance?? (if so, I know the cellar :D, their son Graham has an oenology degree from SA and is a winemaker down in Stanthorpe)

No, not the same couple.

isn't that a oxymoron - a wine maker in stanthorpe?

The Penfolds promotion is my first cabinet, was this a first or something they do every now and then? I doubt I will ever manage to fit 35 bottles in it so now I want another one

It was not the first Penfolds wine cabinet promotion - I have a Vintec wine cabinet from a promotion a couple of years ago. At that time, you could only buy the wine through smaller retailers, not Dan's, so I suspect it was a lot less popular.

As a Queenslander, it's surprising you made that comment!

Stanthorpe is gaining quite a decent winemaking reputation, given it has a similar climate to many other good grape growing/wine making regions - I.e. It's cold by Qld standards!
