Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

As a Queenslander, it's surprising you made that comment!

Stanthorpe is gaining quite a decent winemaking reputation, given it has a similar climate to many other good grape growing/wine making regions - I.e. It's cold by Qld standards!
Indeed, quite a few wineries in the district (although I'm not sure how Sirromet snuck in there as Mt Cotton is nowhere near Stanthorpe/Ballandean).

There's no need for an extra "N" when you are in Niagara!

if you've tried qld wines you'd understand. Having said that some of the best ports and Madeiras I've tried in Oz have come from Roma ... Similar climate to Portugal. Shame the Romavilla 'winery' is closed now

Went to Sirromet a couple of weeks ago.
Fabulous company (the people I went with), great lunch, ordinary wine, lousy cellar door.

Totally agree.
They are so full of themselves at the cellar door, I was expecting great quality to match but tasted only mediocre wines.
I would go back just for the restaurant.

My penfolds fridge arrived early last week... I almost forgot I ordered it as it was ages ago. Only regret is I should have gotten two of them.

We had a family function in Lurleen's a few weeks back.
Great atmosphere , great service, very good food and very ordinary wines…
It's just nearby so we will return ...but it's a real pity that such a well oiled machine sells a limited range of own goal dud wines.
Folks from overseas expecting great au wines must leave scratching their heads...

Now now they are not all bad.For the last 3 years I spent in the Hunter Valley I selected and ran the blind tastings for our wine club.A few winemakers amongst the members.I put on a ~ 10 year old Robinson's Shiraz on one occasion and it got not undeserved praise.I had bought a dozen on a trip to QLD.

either very lucky or very game drron. Having said that robinson's was one the places we always visited when we stayed in stanthorpe when we lived on the Sunshine Coast 25-30years ago. Admitted there were only 7-8 cellar doors in those days!

Agreed.

Have you tried any recently?

I have and whilst some are terrible (O'Reilly's, for example), some are quite good. Can't say I've had any good reds, but good whites. Have a reserve Chardonnay from Heritage Estate in my fridge! The 2007 won Winestate magazine wine of the year (the one I have is a 2009).

No luck involved.I tasted the wine.Felt it would develop well.So bought a dozen.
Even in the roughest of places you sometimes can find a gem.

Opened and decanted a 2012 Penfolds RWT 2 nights ago. Interesting tannin structure and magnificent bouquet. I'm particularly interested to see how the other bottle plays out after 10-12 years or so.

2008 Chardonnay from Yarra Valley. Gosh it was good, lingering tastes of plums and nectarines. Paired nicely with a mushroom risotto. Yum Yum. Still one more in the cellar for a warm summer night

Thanks for the Chardy post, very few here.
Reminds me about one I bought from Vintage Cellars a few weeks ago. I think $20 per bottle. Absolutely superb drinking at that price point, great length.
