Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Re: Nice Wines I have DranK Recently - Red or White

Um, "like like like" or more to the point "drink drink drink" :) MR Shiraz is indeed very nice with nice depth, spice and white pepper notes etc ( mt barker is interestng for that) but the best WA CS are in a different class, IMHO.

I find MR shiraz very hit and miss! Drank a very nice Laurance last night at a mate's place (bought when we were in MR about 2 years ago), but the last couple of MR Shiraz' I've had have been cough!

Does anyone know what happened to Edwards & Chaffey wines?

Do you normally like Pinot Gris? If you do, which ones? I've not tried this one, but do like Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris. Actually haven't had any Brokenwood wine that I can recall, but seem to recall they are well regarded.

The latest issue of Gourmet Traveller Wine (Oct/Nov) has a big pinot gris/grigio tasting that you may wish to check out.

No hugely and to be honest, I think on the whole Australia doesn't exactly make great examples of either (I have no doubt there are some good examples out there, I just haven't put any effort into hunting for them). I prefer the Gris over Grigio style and have had French examples that I've enjoyed more. This is just my personal opinion, but I think a lot of Australian Grigio is just competing for the same consumers who are downing the cheap NZ Sauv Blanc.

Re Brokenwood. They are most famous for their Hunter Valley Graveyard Shiraz. Their ILR Reserve Semillion is excellent in my opinion and up there with Tyrells Vat 1 and Mount Pleasant Lovedale.

If you are a Pinot Gris fan, then for $30, its probably worth you seeking this wine out. It wasn't terrible. I tend to judge harshly (unlike Halliday) :)

You don't like Eden/Clare Valley Riesling?

Au contraire, probably the best Australian rieslings come from there.
Opened this one for the big family get together tonight. Zesty, lemon and floral. Nice nose, and long in the mouth. Not in the same league as the Grosset Polish Hill, but for $19 the bang-for-buck is high

Agree probably the best Aussie Rieslings come from Clare/Eden. Your previous comment could be read as you only have clare/Eden Rieslings for your other half and mother in law!

Some good ones from Frankland River WA too and I've recently drank some nice ones from Victoria, including one from Strathbogie a couple of weeks ago and a Granite Hills from Macedon today.

Paulett's do some pretty good stuff. How was it? I often don't like Riesling with age as it often tastes/smells like petrol/kero. Not all though - I have a 2007 Pewsey Vale Contours.

Haha, it's half true - I do like whites, and the Paulett has an impressive length, mouthfeel and minerality that is appealing to me. The zest is evident on the nose and has enticing floral taste. It's a bargain for the price. 4 years is fine for this, and still have legs for a while longer yet

Remembering fondly the Alkoomi from Frankland River - their riesling is very good. As is their shiraz

A friend has just returned from France and brought back a 1999 Clos L'Eglise from the Pomerol region. A very nice drop.
