Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

A friend has just returned from France and brought back a 1999 Clos L'Eglise from the Pomerol region. A very nice drop.

A few years ago I was given a La Petite Eglise from Pomerol that still remains in the top 3 red wines I have ever experienced (the other two being a Hill of Grace a few months ago, and a 1984 Penfolds Bin 707 last year). A half dozen bottles of the Petite Eglise were decanted for a special event, and the remains in the decanters filled a bottle that was sealed and sent home to me. It was wonderfully smooth and fruity and a something I doubt I would have experienced if not for the generosity of the particular cellarmaster!

This was purchased from Vinomofo a few weeks ago:

Decanted for an hour. Plenty of sediment thrown.

Nose of concentrated dark fruits, leather, cloves, Chinese five spice, sweet vanilla.

Palette is fruit driven and plenty of a vanilla too. Again, dark fruits (maybe slightly sweet almost), liquorice, earthiness. Tannins are soft but there. Medium plus acid, good length. Slight alcohol heat and slightly astringent finish.

As you would pretty much expect of an old vine McLaren Vale Shiraz. Good to drink now and may improve, but will easily hold another five years.

Just returned from one of our local community fundraisers....the table wines were a selection from most of the raffle list :D 19 tables of 10 - very impressive. BTW all wines including the raffle prizes were donated!

I've tried several of their vintages and they are really great wines.

Indeed - and a visit to the vineyard/winery is interesting. It reveals why they call it Mt Difficulty. There are several icon wineries on the same road but further from the unusually bleak-looking landscape formations of Mt Difficulty - notably the eponymous Felton Rd and what used to be Olsen's but now has a new name that I can't recall at the moment.

Theme last night for my tasting group was Pinot Noir. Seemed there was an abundance of Burgundy with a couple of 1er and even a grand cru (WOTN) making an appearance. Awesome generosity shown by everyone.

Pffft - a selection of the usual rubbish we've come to expect from you Daver6 :p.

BTW, what year was the Dry River, and what was it like? I have a few 08, 09 & 10 slumbering.

As I said...I was seriously impressed by the generosity of the group sharing some of these wines.

Dry River was 2007. My memory is hazy, so let me consult my notes when I get some and I'll post. Happy to post tasting notes for all the wines if there is interest in that?
