Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I've got one bottle of this left (must have purchased a dozen on release) and thought it never quite lived up to expectations of the vintage. Not a bad wine, was just expecting more. What are your thoughts in terms of drinking now or holding for another few years based on this bottle?

Mine has been wine frudged for many years. I think it's brilliant now. Maybe would last for another 5 years but it won't improve. It's at its best or on a plateau now.

Advice. Drink now in a dark room by yourself with nice dinner or with very good friends ( such as those from AFF! :) )

Seems like as good a choice as any for a cold blustery Perth winter's evening.

Soave went through a popularity generated bad phase of over production period for a number of years with cough cheap rubbish polluting the 'brand' until the better producers got fed up and banded together to save the brand/grape. IMHO Pieropan Soaves have been improving wonderfully in last few years. One of my go tos in the U.K. or Europe in restaurants these days. Nice quality drinking at fair prices. There are 'better' Soaves but not at this point. From memory, Decanter rates their wines highly.

Likewise. Mine were wine fridged and then cellared when I moved, so not a storage issue. I'm kinda tempted to just give it another couple of years or so and see where it goes. Nothing to lose. I've got a single '96 tucked away somewhere too. Had a couple of those already and they were glorious.

Lots to lose actually. :). If I were religious I would say it's a sin to keep wine too long past its drinkby date.

Hmmm. Just checked Rewards of Patience (6th edition). Suggested drinking window is till 2025. Pretty sure there should be a 7th edition out by now. If anyone has it and would like to share the tasting note, that would be awesome.

Also note the CT consensus is:

Best enjoyed between 2007 and 2014

Brave man to keep one until 2025! Then pour down sink! :)

Followed be a read of the agony of failure :)

Righto...will knock it off in the next 12 months. Knowing my luck, being under cork, it will be horribly ruined by TCA

CT consensus is based off actual drinking rather than any suggested window IIRC.

Not quite. In CT you can enter your own values for the drinking windows. It's just an average of what people have entered.

Tonight was continuing on the Victorian theme.
I have never been good at describing wines.Just know what I like and have been reasonably successful at picking wines to cellar. This one an outstanding wine.drinking beautifully.

Ah I see; I really enjoy Champagnes that have had extended time on Lees.

Me too! I'm a big fan of this one. I got it around Christmas from WD when they had a promo on. It was a mixed sixer of Champagne with a bottle of Pertaringa Yeoman Shiraz. 10 years on lees 2004 vintage! Web says $95 but I now pay $79 pb, I'm guessing that is available to everyone, would be worth asking. . .

A great hunter shiraz this weekend. More intense and fruit forward than the 2013.
Finished off with a 'good ol port' that you don't see much of these days. Sadly the cork broke.

Still keeping with the Victorian theme.A slightly older Tahbilk Cab sav.But their ordinary bottling not the Reserve. The difference is obvious.Have another bottle which I will drink soon as this one is not going to get better.Still a very nice tipple.

This was at lunch in Sydney yesterday. Was nice. Thank you to whomever brought it.

Dinner wine was a '12 McLaren Vale GSM and a younger Barossa Shiraz. Both average, and no photos because the restaurant was dark. Post dinner I had tonic water with some gin.

Nice Victorian Pinot to go with baked Salmon tonight.

This drop was recommended by one of the Boccaccio brothers during recent visit to their wonderful cellar.

About a month or so ago, went to a 40th party in the bush, and came across this bottle sitting on the table in the marquee. I couldn't believe my eyes! It hadn't been opened, but I reasoned that "it wouldn't have been brought out if it wasn't meant to be drunk, right?" So I set about opening with a waiters friend. There was little to no ullage and the cork broke up while extracting it, but it wasn't so bad - I could still pour a glass without more than a piece or two of cork to fish out. And let me tell you, this VP was glorious (even if sipped out of plastic cups). It kept getting better the more I returned to it (i'm sure it was due to the air and not my slight inebriation!) such that it was singing by the time I left, having accounted for near half the bottle.

I managed to track down the person who brought it and thanked them profusely - they thought they may have confused it with the 'Peter's Port' in the background when rounding up wines to bring, but were happy it was opened. The "Peter" in question (Peter Bartter of the Chicken empire) also likely gave them this Orlando Port as well as his own. And while Peter's Port was indeed a lovely tawny, this Orlando VP was just a cut above again. A port on a cold country winter's night, what could be better?

So last night I had a bit of a journey through Spain via Tempranillo and Tempranillo blends. I didn't really take photos or proper tasting notes (I am hopeless at this)... but here is my vague memory.

Luis Cañas Rioja Crianza 2013 - Rioja
Easy drinking, dryer in style (which I enjoy), tannin present, but not in the way. The aftertaste has a bit of a kick, which may not suit all, especially on an empty stomach.

Bodega Classica El Pacto Crianza 2011 - Rioja
Medium everything - Medium fruit, Medium bodied, medium tannin, well rounded. Very easy to drink with food, but no wow factor.

Matsu El Recio 2013 - Toro
Wine of the night for me. Better balanced the previous, and a little more finesse. Toro is often underrated compared to Rioja, but this wine certainly punches above the other two at a similar price point.
