Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

To celebrate not caving in to buying the latest 2016 release wines from Serrat, I thought I'd open this midweek quaffer!

I paid $75 for it through a private sale recently. But stuff it. I saved a small fortune with my self-imposed wine buying amnesty. I'm sure you won't be surprised to learn I quite like the spoils of my acquiescence:

2008 Serrat Shiraz - Viognier, Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley - CellarTracker

"A secret midweek treat! And what a treat.

This is Shiraz Viognier of the highest Australian order.

At this 9 year point, you can salivate over a rich, darkened black cherry appearance, a deeply perfumed nose, a powerful medium weight palate, and a firery, lingering finish. It's pristine and beautifully nuanced in its delivery. It's an intellectual's wine. A wine best served with food.

Expect black forest fruits, charcuterie, dried French herbs, ginger, honeycomb, cedar oak, and so much more. $42 (members price) is ridiculous for this close planted, low volume cool climate red.

Small wonder it doubles, triples and more on the secondary market. Drink 2016-2023. A Wozza 95/100 (4.2/5.0) from me.

At $75/bottle, it better be Clonakilla :)

Woke up this morning and realised I had mixed them up! (A long day!).

I thought I would log on to see somebody would point out my mix up.

Post above now corrected. It was the Clonakilla. Paid $75, but see from Winosphere it was $85 at the cellar door on release.

Thank you. Enjoy your day all ...

Wozza we are relieved you picked up your error. We are heading towards Mondavi and Silver Oak country next week.
We have a Treasury Wines exec in our apartment building so I hope to catch up with him in LA.

I'm impressed with your restraint; my wine buying amnesty had a specific exclusion for the Serrat release. :D

Lucky you!

Yes, I held out. But it was the most tempted I've been.

If I can survive that, then I should hopefully last until 1 October.

How long is your buying amnesty in place?

Hmmmm, it has no set time frame. Overall our buying has to reduce significantly so we can afford to pay for our house build. So it has to be a really really good deal for us to break.

First time posting a pic, so be gentle with any technical issues.

An interesting taste last weekend (part of a much larger tasting).

The Belle Epoque (2004) was tinged with cork taint; I thought it was pretty clear, although some on the table disagreed with me. Still a nice sparkling, if a little coarse. Disappointing as the 1996 Belle Epoque was the wine that got me into Champagne.

The Vueve (2004) was as good as you would expect, quite acidic, more pronounced fruit. Fruits starting to develop slight secondary characteristics.

However, the real star was the Krug (2002); velvety mouthfeel, brioche-like toastiness, clear and unfaded citrus fruit; all balanced perfectly. Tasted as though it has just been released (which it may have been, I'm not sure how Krug release their vintages).

Believe what you will about French wines, but they indisputably excel at Champagne.

The 2002 Krug was released about a year to 18 months ago I think. Disgorged 2014.

Ah I see; I really enjoy Champagnes that have had extended time on Lees. It would be interesting to taste the Arras Late Disgorged, but I haven't got around to it yet.

On the subject of Wineosphere, my free access to scores and reviews seems to have been revoked on the Wineosphere App and I now get prompted to login using WineFront creds. Has this happened to anyone else recently?

TBF I find the WF guys inputs very useful so it probably is time I signed up.

Yes you'll need your Wine Front subscription to see their reviews, as Steady confirmed. I think $50 a year is well worth it for me. Those guys work really hard. And their reviews are excellent.

Saturday night special. Was concerned about another young (12 yo) wine a few weeks ago that had to be dumped but this bottle had cork intact but fell apart on opening but wine itself is just brilliant! Aged extremely well. Cassis, chocolate, very fine grained tannins. Cellaring can be very rewarding.:) :)

I've got one bottle of this left (must have purchased a dozen on release) and thought it never quite lived up to expectations of the vintage. Not a bad wine, was just expecting more. What are your thoughts in terms of drinking now or holding for another few years based on this bottle?
