Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

The Diana Madeline is a superb wine. How's the 2012 drinking?
It’s far better than the 2010 that I’ve been drinking. I think it has decades but definitely drinking well now. (One of the better wines I’ve had in the last 12 months and glad I have plenty more)

At dinner tonight in Uyuni, Bolivia after returning from three days on the Salar de Uyuni and the mountains. My great tour group of seven is mostly people much younger than me and not heavily into wine, so going to the top of the wine list is not an option.

These were very good middle-of-the road wines. The Malbec had all the classic smoothness and richness of a classic Mendoza Malbec but was relatively simple. The Merlot was more complex.

Anyway, Bolivia is no deadbeat wine producer.

Another night, another Bolivian wine in Bolivia. Tonight in Potosi.

This one, again from the Tarija region at 2000m in S Bolivia, which is directly N of the well-known Salta region in Argentina, was a crowd-pleaser.

Fruity-spicy, smooth texture, easy-drinking. It appealed to everyone in the group. 13.2% ABV was an interesting surprise.

I had the traditional Bolivian dish Silpancho (Silpancho - Wikipedia) which was very filling but well worth the try - and the wine went well with it.

Hmm - somehow ended up on its side.

Tonight was our last night in Sucre, and our second last night in Bolivia. As our hotel has a pleasant courtyard we decided to buy some Bolivian wine, make some fresh guacomole with fabulous fresh avocadoes from the market, get some cheese, crusty bread, cured meats etc. and spend the evening chilling out.

Here are the wines:

The wines were all from Tarija. All were very good. The Magnus Trivarietal needed the most air to blow off what I found to be a medicinal overtone. The Tannat was smooth and rich, while the Cab Franc was a fairly heavy duty version that could do with more time to soften. The Magnus Cab Sauv was very good but not what most Australians would recognise as Cab Sauv. Smooth and chocolatey rather than rich and fruity.

A great night! :)

Tomorrow night back in La Paz we have a booking at Gustu:
Gustu | Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants 2016

Really looking forward to that and I plan to do the wine pairing. I shall report ;).

Last night we made a 2011 Moss Wood red rarer. It was really very good.
Since Penfolds jacked up their pricing I have continued with Moss Wood and Diana Madeline. The Penfolds 707 is a bit high when we can get the other two for a bit over one hundred dollars a bottle.

Another needle for JohnM to help with his travel knitting. An aged Pinot. Yummy. Good fruit, nice tannins but still quite green and a little sweet. Has some years to go.
