Just watched episode 3 of Drops of God. Shocked. Just can’t believe they got the wine choice and grape types so wrong! Unforgivable.

Let me know your feedback if you watch it!

Decided to challenge my perceptions of Queensland wine tonight.

It’s a very fine drop.

Smooth and in terms of its structure could easily be mistaken for a McLaren Vale or Barossa Shiraz.

The softness and the fact that it has a little hint more fruit than most Aussie shiraz, reminded me a lot of a Wirra Wirra RSW from ‘08 or ‘10.

This was a gift. But would I pay ~$55 for it? Probably.

So this thread? Could be another thread - prolly OT in most but I will post here anyway.

We both just love Command:

Rarely if ever discounted - and not cheap direct from Elderton so to get it at $135 at a fully fledged restaurant such a bargain:

So to next point - is a a night out at a quality restaurant that does not permit BYO getting out of reach of lots of potential customers?

In posting this I must note I have huge sympathy towards the restaurant / cafe / hospitality industry - they were ravaged by Covid and those that survived need the support of the public - I wasn't complaining about the size of the bill just asking the Q is it getting out of reach?

And throw in the rapid increase in food ingredients we have experienced over last year or so and OMG the poor buggers are squeezed again.

Given the mark ups that many hospitality locations seek are we fast approaching a stage that now the only way to enjoy a 'quality' bottle of wine with dinner is to buy yourself and enjoy at home?

Hansa's wine prices are quite reasonable - imagine what this bill could have ended up with the type of mark-up many other outlets seek?

I see it as a very worrying state of affairs - we have friends who could / would never pay this type of rate - I am still very worried for so many in the hospitality industry going forward.

We drank water at that QT Hotel in PERth’s steakhouse as their wine list was so high @Cruiser Elite. We did enjoy the steaks. Mrscove was quite astonished by the Wilson Parking charge.

Yes it is. There is no doubt that many restaurants hiked their booze prices post COVID- some to the point of ridiculousness.

With my eyes fading I decided to look to give away my copy of Wine Grapes (print getting slightly too small) to a friend who has just started her wine joujrney and replace it wioth a digital Kindle version. So, for all the wine nerds out there, there's a fabulous opportunity to purchase Jancis Robertson's Wine Grapes book in Kindle form for only AUD$29.99 from the australian amazon site. There's a serious discontinuity on prices between AU and US sites.

You're not wrong! On Kobo's Aus site (as I'm not tied to the Kindle ecosystem), it's the same price too $29.99. I'll pick up a copy tonight, as it looks interesting. I can lie in bed and rattle off inumerable fun-facts for MrsK.

Quite amazing these days to find such a differential between us and aus pricing, especially for books. Normally us pricing is better.

ps: kindle on devices is free app On most devices (we use iPads ). We use it all the time. Very good.

Just a note. I had to change my kindle preferences to .com.au from .com to complete the purchase. All well until I tried to use my Alexa Show to turn on lights and camera’s tonight. All gone! 40 routines and all devices! Had to cycle power point to turn on lights!

After 20 min online chat with Amazon support, Jennifer finally worked out that changing my Amazon kindle address to .com.au had reset my Alexa show. Now restored. Brilliant tech support from Amazon, particularly dealing with a somewhat grumpy OB!

Freezing in Melbs last night, was away for the weekend and it was a great chance to light a fire and open my last of the bargain CH’s from a few years back. Best one of the lot I think.

The wine or the cow?
Well you would hope it wasn’t cow beef - steer or heifer yes - cow beef invariably ends up in US hamburger chains - but back to TMA’s post - more olive oil good man - you should see how OT dunk every steak into an olive oil bath pre-cooking - cannot over oil

Salt both sides, then smother in olive oil, leave for 2 hrs, cook on very hot cast iron skillet for 2.5 minutes, turning every 30 seconds.
