Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I particularly like Pinots from around Geelong. I've got a 2008 of that I'll make a note to drink soon.

Farr (the dad) Sangreal is very good Pinot if you're looking for something special.

Bannockburn (nearby and where Gary Farr (the dad) was once winemaker) also produces very good Pinot.

Farr and Bannockburn also make fantastic Chardonnay!

That's very disappointing to hear. I had a bottle of the 2010 Tintara last week and it was very good.

You can't compare a 2010 (should be a cracker) with a 2012. I can't say that the provenance of the 2012 was much chop either - on a shelf in a Cellarbrations store in Hervey Bay. Probably got what I deserved...

Actually, I think there will be huge comparisons between those two South Australian vintages. Both excellent for reds. Expect to hear that the 2012 Grange is the best ever.

Tonight's tastings:

OrPinot&Fiano.JPG
Fiano.JPG

I recently spotted this small Margaret River producer MARQ doing Italian varietal whites (Fiano and Vermentino) - and Malbec ;), so I thought I'd give them a crack.

Daver6, I imagine you know something about this guy?

Had a glass or two of the Fiano as a pre-dinner drink. I was impressed. I'm not familiar enough with Italian Fiano to know what rates as 'good' Fiano in the homeland but this had flavour, texture and a bit of wow factor. Mouthfeel was a little heavy, oily almost - a bit like Viognier but flavour was sharper and with more astringency. B* good IMHO on the JohnM Simpler and Fairer Highly Technical Wine Evaluation Scale[SUP]Pat. Pend TM[/SUP].

The Evesham Wood Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley in Oregon, of which half was consumed tonight with a fennel-crusted pork cutlet, was a Not bad on the scale. It was light bodied and had good acidity so it cut through the pork nicely but it lacked wow factor.

I've been to the Willamette Valley a few times and I would rate this as a bit of a disappointment compared with the likes of Pinot Noir power-plays like Elk Cove. (Nb. I bought the Evesham Wood in Australia). I do note that it is an organic producer - IMO they frequently disappoint (hastily puts on asbestos suit).

Any Pinot Noir lovers out there who haven't been to the Willamette Valley, I can recommend it as a great place to visit. It's a comfortable drive from Portland which itself is a nice place to visit. For aviation enthusiasts, of which there may be a few here ;), the Evergreen Aviation Museum near McMinnville is a great place to visit, with the famed Sprucegoose the highlight Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum | Wings & Waves Waterpark | McMinnville Oregon.

McMinnville has the fabulous old-style McMenamins Hotel accommodation that I highly recommend McMenamins - McMenamins Hotel Oregon - McMinnville, OR (503) 472-8427 - McMinnville Restaurants and Hotels.

Actually not familiar with him or his wines. Perhaps this needs to be rectified.

Can we organise an AFF group purchase on replacement livers? :)

The Friday night tipple. A Yalumba The Menzies 2006 Cab Sav enjoyed with a nice steak.

On the new JohnM Simpler and Fairer Highly Technical Wine Evaluation Scale[SUP]Pat. Pend. TM[/SUP]: It is at least B* good without quite being F* awesome. But definitely good enough that blackcat20 has already trawled through the Dans website to find which stores have stock :D

Princess Fiona can install them ;):p.

One of the virtues of being diagnosed with hemochromatosis in mid life is that you get a liver biopsy. A "half way mark" assessment of wear and tear on that vital organ which I'm pleased to say was in pretty good shape (considering...). Bloods continue to green light access to the cellar :)

Tonight's and Thursdays wines are these two:

I chose to open the Tintara, I recently bought some from EpiQure and haven't tasted yet.

Much younger than last nights Shiraz, but matched to a spaghetti bolognese. Acidic to start but settled a bit on the second mouthful but didn't get any better on the second glass.

On the JohnM Simpler and Fairer Highly Technical Wine Evaluation Scale, I rate it a 2.

Next time we meet QF WP, ask me about the spag bol secret ingredient.

Some people do, I think it is called a vertical tasting.

A few years ago I tried to organise a Rockford Basket Press vertical tasting. 10 successive vintages, 10 participants, $100 a head. Astounded there were not 10 interested persons. Maybe I need a new circle of friends.

Must have been pre-AFF...
