Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Some friends over for a Sunday debrief - I wanted to test the Margaret River 2017 Cabernets to see if they are as lean as predicted.

The group loved the Margaret, full bodied and rich. Of all the Woodlands Cabernets I think the Margaret is made in a style that suits a leaner year; I've had the top Cabernet from 17 and , compared to the 16 it was dismal. I personally thought the Mossy was great, much more aromatic than usual, tight, ethereal; the group disagreed.

Also the Clarence House Estate is a cracking fruit forward pinot for the price point, really rate them.

I’m a happy camper :)

can you recall how it compares with the reserve cleanskin?

They are very similar, the clean skin was fuller/deeper, all of the parts meshed into one/integrated, polished, had a silkier mouthfeel. I see why the reserve was released before the standard.

Tonight's imbibation with battered flathead fillets, fried spicy potato wedges and some avocado.
At first I thought it was a bit lack lustre, but it took a half hour or so to open up, still with some lime and lemon components and a bit spritzig on the tongue, with some small bubbles forming in the glass and that golden colour.
Tres bon. Love aged Rieslings.

..aand.. I loaded this (upright) image twice and each time the aff software turned it sideways...
Yep I also struggle with aff rotating the images. Not sure how to overcome.

Back to the wine, drink now or let it sleep?

I contemplated opening one of those tonight, but ended up going with this.

Final vintage before they sold to Woolies I believe:

A wonderful drop to accompany the roast lamb:

Pretty pleased I managed to do the roast after spending a decent part of the day in ED.

But we’re off topic. So to get us back on track...

Mrs H opened this last night with a grazing plate at the school quiz night.

Yes, a BYO school quiz night. Go figure.🤔

I’ve no idea how they made any money without a bar.

Anyhow, Mrs H and her table came last.

The shiraz is being blamed for her poor performance.

One of these 2 was a very tidy mid week quaffer and the other bottle of rubbish wend down the drain where it truly belongs:

Guess which went down the drain?

Now I have 4 bottles of the cough still in cellar - free to anybody who correctly answers this simple question - ‘Which of these 2 AFFers still has in their pocket the very first penny they ever owned - Tommy or penegal?’

I know which one is the tidy mid week quaffer because I had it myself recently. Not sure about THE other THING.

What started as Chardonnay day got extended to Chardonnay week. To make it a bit more interesting the focus was on 2017 wines I had in my fridge. There are 5 Aussie and 1 French for a bit of diversity. This is Vol. 1 and the plan is to do Vol. 2 in few years with more premium Chardy 17s which are currently resting in the cellar.

As seen on the photo I had the Chablis last and it was completely different to the others, very good wine and the most enjoyable to drink by itself with no food required. Out of the Aussie the best was M3 while Credaro was my least favourite.

Looks like we were both doing vintage tasting at the same time :)

This thread is now read only for me and left to the glitterati to pass their wisdom down to the great unwashed .
Conceptually wine is for everyone, at every price point… others may gloat at such simplicity...such is life...
