Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

20210907_192835 (1).jpg
Both mrsandye and I working in the hospital this weekend so delayed Fathers' Day roast. Star of the show was the standing rib but enjoyed the Henschke's Euphonium 2016. Label recommends decanting which I don't usually do, but it did seem to drink even better than previous tastings.

Both Halliday and Hooke gave it 93pts which is quite low for their usual overly generous scoring.

Hooke did taste it again in Feb 21 and gave 96 this time, up from 93 in Dec 19 which is a bit puzzling. I would expect someone like him to recognise the potential of a wine going years ahead, let alone in 15 months.

It was the Chardonnay (no longer available).
Glad people like it! I just bought a six from DM under wraps a few days ago when there was 12% cb. I'm not usually one for $60 wine but HH and a Langtons excellent had me, maybe plus lockdown fever.

Nice!
Did you have to decant it for long? And is it too young to enjoy it?
I tend to wait for 8-15 years before opening it usually.
We decant EVERY bottle of red for couple hours - is it too young? That’s part of the bench mark process - sub $70 389 drinkable at any age IMHO - absolutely a prolonged sleep will enhance the wine - if you knew my age and my life history then 8-15 years might be a bit of a ‘pie in the sky’ concept - enjoy them while you can - tomorrow may never come

Thanks!!
At times I'm too afraid to open 70+ wines for being too young (has harsh tannin that requires opening until the next day to be enjoyable).
From your comments it seems the other way around.
Now I think about it - I had a few 100+ bottle in a restaurant and surprisingly approachable but never cross me that those built for the long haul are also approachable young.

Horsy don’t quote me as an expert - see the thread title? Nice wines ‘I have drunk recently’ - totally subjective - I am also the one who can’t give away DM and MM Q quick enough when plenty others love them

Cruiser, well I can always learn a thing or two... you seems pretty experience ☺️.
I'm still discovering what I really like and what I don't quite enjoy.

I was fortunate to try different vintages of AS over the years, all excellent but this is the best one I had so far.

It’s just so perfectly balanced and has everything I’m looking for in an Aussie Chardonnay. Amazing drop!

Do you think it was the best in terms of vintage or just drinking it at the perfect age for your tastes? Or more likely a combo of both :) More research please ;)

Ps. As per @boomy post, generally IMHO 5-7 years is a good cellaring time for these LE Chardonnays.

I do 5 years for Xanadu, Curly Flat and 5-9 for Yabby Lake Single vineyards.

Although with advancing age (human) and etc, sometimes cellaring for the afternoon is acceptable.:p:D:p🥳😎

For me it was a perfect combination between power and finesse. Not sure if 14 was an exceptional vintage in MR, you will know better. It could be the age although still quite young and I’m actually excited to open another bottle in 3, 5 and 10 years to see how it develops.
