re: " o noes! " - Singapore enhances redemption rates

Do you still book these through the SQ website? Sorry for the silly question, but I have no experience in booking more then pure SQ flights. Might need to get to Europe in August-September but dont know just yet..

You dont. Need to call

re: " o noes! " - Singapore enhances redemption rates

So it is more Kris Miles and less cash for redemptions. I can get used to this.

re: " o noes! " - Singapore enhances redemption rates

Some interesting info here, any obvious ex Aus routes with this quirk?

Fly Singapore for Fewer Miles By Adding a Star Alliance Leg

If Virgin was in the Star Alliance it would be easy to do. If they allow a stopover on a Star Alliance award to Europe or the USA this could also be easy to do as you need to add a partner airline flight with the Singapore flight to be eligable for the Redemption.

The T&C's say a stopover is allowed on a return journey. However I wonder like under the current system with Saver Fares if you pay the USD $100 fee you can add a stopover whether this will also work for the Star Alliance award. IE fly SYD-LAX stop a few days/week later fly a United flight internally, etc.

In terms of net dollar cost whether one is in front or not will depend on how one is acquiring ones KF points, plus the cabin one will fly in and the route.
If on normal spend then it is less "total cash". However some people effectively buy some, or many, ff points either through credit card sign ons (sometimes effectively free like with Explorer) or through surcharge. ie ATO spend, retailers, utilities etc

For say F to London one-way that is an extra 35,375 points.

Fuel charge surcharge is $356.

So break-even for this example is at a cost of 1.006 cents per point.

So if one "buys" points at more than an average of 1.006 cpp then the change will actually mean an increased total cost in $$ spent per flight.

Whereas if one "buys" points at less than an average of 1.006 cpp then the change will mean a decreased total cost in $$ spent per flight.

re: " o noes! " - Singapore enhances redemption rates

Ok I am in front.
Thanks for the maths LTO.
Just trying to get a Chase Sapphire US CC for tax payments after June 30th for Kris Miles at 0.54% plus exchange rate differential so currently around 0.72 cents and less if my fiscal friend partner wants to help out.

re: " o noes! " - Singapore enhances redemption rates

Gday

I am in exactly the same situation as dannyism. In July this year i was planning to redeem 2 pax in F for SYD- SIN- ZRH return for travel in June 2018. It was going to cost 450,500 plus $1,858 in charges. With the devaluation it is now going to cost 592,000 points plus $341 in charges. I will be paying 141,500 points to reduce the charges by $1,517. It works out at 1.07 cents per point. I would buy them all day long at that price as i dont generate many points on my general expenses.

I just called the Krisflyer number to ask about ticket validity as i have read all the posts with the speculation about booking now and then changing. The summary is that the ticket is valid 12 months from date of issue, not from date of first flight. My plan was to book a flight now for February 2018 and then in July this year change it to June 2018. He said no can do. The mans response mirrored the computer error someone got above when they tried to extend their ticket out past 365 days. It is not a website error it is the rules of the ticket.

To be honest that is the response i expected as i ran into the same issue when changing the date of a redemption ticket on another frequent flyer program- it couldn't be pushed out past 365 days of the initial ticket being issued.

Kind of sucks as my trip was being planned years in advance but at least SQ is giving a small consolation in no YQ. If this is how it is for another 5 years I will live with it as long as the redemption seat availability remains intact.

Pele.

Hi Pele,

It does suck, but I've just decided to roll the dice anyway by booking a flight for mid-February next year in the hope of changing it to April at a later date. There is variation depending on who you happen to talk to at Krisflyer, and they may also have some leeway on either side of a devaluation like this. And the cancellation fees aren't too bad anyway.

re: " o noes! " - Singapore enhances redemption rates

Gday

Yeah i suppose the worst case scenario is you pay a $USD30 cancel fee and get the points back and rebook at the higher rate. Not a bad gamble. Maybe i will do the same.

Pele.

If only they would add free/taxes only infant redemption to this enhancement, I'd book in a heartbeat.

taxes for infant tickets are sickening. A recent ticket I made the infant fees are 10x that of the adult taxes.

Yes, SQ is not your friend on infant redemptions. I have done a few and they definitely hurt.

re: " o noes! " - Singapore enhances redemption rates

The ticket validity is 100% 12 months from the the date of the first flight.
In the last 2 months I have changed 3 seperate flight bookings that I had made to avoid losing points that where going to expire.
I had no issues whats so ever in changing these, twice was via phone the other at Singapore office.
Hope that helps

And that won't be changing under new system - technically if you can find availability extension window has no end date.

But what can you actually point to if you can't do it online and you get someone on the phone (as some people already have done) who insists that you can't go beyond a year from the date of ticket issuance?

Kris Flyer Terms and Conditions:
Section F:
Point # 19 as below:
19. All award tickets are valid for twelve months from the date of the first flight as ticketed, unless otherwise specified.
Straight forward really.

Thanks. Guess I just have to hope I encounter the right person on the phone.

Sometimes the SQ call centre can be pretty bad, especially so when trying to answer hypothetical questions. Much easier to get an accurate response when calling to ask with a specific reservation/ticket in mind they can check with. The T&C and my experience (and that of several others) is that the ticket is valid for 12 months from first date of travel on the ticket. I also wouldn't read too much in the inability to make such a change online, it is well known around here that the SQ IT system for Krisflyer awards has quite a lot of limitations, I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of such limitations.

Once you have a ticket, you should get the correct answer ... until then you will get some information that may or may not be correct.

I was a little surprised that even looking at my existing e-tickets, I can't find anything about ticket validity or other conditions.
