When making the 280K booking do we need to call up or can we book online? And if we need to call up will they charge a booking assistance fee?

It can be done online using the multi-city booking function.

While I have not done so, there is at least one anecdote (within this thread?) of such occurring successfully.

Thanks, yes I found one of these and accepted it as enough evidence for me. In any case, I'm fairly relaxed about it as I wanted to lock the flights to LHR in so if it doesn't work out then so be it.

k3nnis, my understanding from perusing the thread is the 280K can be booked entirely online provided the flights are available. Often certain award seats aren't released at the time of booking it in, so people call up and get them added to the booking, this will incur the fee (not done this myself, just noted many examples of this)

The other limitation to booking online is that some airlines, for example Malaysian, are not available online so you do have to call if you want them as part of your booking.

Thanks for this info I was wondering why I could not see these flights (MAS) as part of my planned trip. So if you cannot see them on line and need to make the booking via the call centre why would they charge a fee?

That's just the way it is for these awards.

If you want to see what awards Malaysian has available then use either ba.com (sign up as an Exec club member) or get a community account at www.awardnexus.com

And of course try talking nicely to the agent and see if they will waive the fee for you.

An AA flight that wasn't available when I booked my ticket is now so I'm going to try to add it as an extra (still compiles with all the fare rules etc).

I can't do it online as it was booked over the phone... So if I call to do it ill be hit with the 3.5K change fee per pax, however my reading online says that the over the phone assistance fee (an extra 6k) doesn't apply for J or F bookings.

Am I reading right?

I don't believe so, no. Go here and then "In addition, you can also use your AAdvantage miles to book a oneworld Explorer award. Learn more."

Using AAdvantage miles, you can redeem for their OneWorld Explorer Award. 150K miles gets you a Zone 7 award of 20,001 - 25,000 flown miles in business class. 190K miles gets you a Zone 8 award of 25,001-35,000 flown miles in business class. 25,000 miles can get you a basic journey around the world (SYD-LAX-JFK-LHR-HKG-SYD is just under 24,000 miles). But a more complex routing will likely require the Zone 8 award.

Has anybody done a premium economy OW trip using this method? My points balance is approaching the number required to buy two (210k x 2 = 420k), but I was wondering if people had any idea of the availability.

I was thinking of using QF Y+, BA WT+, CX Y+ (with an odd Y trip here or there for positioning).

A lot of what I've read here relates to the J version, so I'd appreciate any advice

You will be limited on routings with a Y+ award, but there will be better availability given AA elites can't redeem on Y+ seats.

Need some help here, if one is booking a OW 140K (or 280K) trip and the trip ENDS in a point that was not the originating port, and then the distance back to the originating port is added to the flight distance, DOES the non flown distance from the last port to the origination port count as an ARK (ARUNK or arrival unknown), as this can effectively reduce the number of stop overs allowed, due to port at BOTH ends of an ARK being counted as a stopover. I tried to explain to the operator but she wasn't having it and said it had to be an ARK to the point of departure. Anybody help here?
