OOL Lounge

Why is that? Just because it is a shared terminal doesn't stop Virgin from setting up a separate line, if they can organise it with the airport/security?

Is there some sort of rule that I don't know about? Happy to be proved wrong. (Well... It means we can't get Priority Security)

It depends on who pays for the security, at OOL its the airport that is the employer which means DJ have to negotiate with them to put in a priority lane, at MEL they employ the screeners so can easily dictate how things are done!

I don't think they do as the terminal is still owned by Melbourne Airport and Rex is also in the same terminal... I expect DJ negotiated with Melbourne Airport.

DJ have exclusive use of the Mel gates where they have the screeners and lease that part of terminal 3, just like in Brisbane domestic where there are three different screening companies doing the work.

Just like that had to do at Sydney?

Sitting in OOL now. Had a look above hungry jacks. It would be a small space, but it could work.

Apologies for the poor iPhone photos.

I was actually wondering that when I was down there last week and caught a climpse of the decent roof space wondering whether the new DJ lounge might be located in it.

As for priority screening, we can only hope, but depends what sort of high status traffic they get through OOL I'd suggest, given its a fairly high leisure market I wouldnt have thought they'd get anywhere near the number of Golds flying through there as MEL, but then I for one wouldn't be complaining at being able to skip the queue's.

it probably could be done if there was space available, but DJ would need to negotiate with JQ and co as well as OOL airport (can't really imagine JQ being ok with it!). shared priority queue maybe (DJ & JQ)?

If the Tiger will be out from the Gold Coast airport - more rooms for DJ Lounge to build...

And still we wait. I have a flight outbound on Saturday so will have a snoop around.

Had another look the other day and I reckon the best place is on the Northern side of gate 5. Pinch a bit of that and the International waiting area going from airside back to international security.

I had another look around the airport over the weekend and I came up with another possible idea. There is plenty of space above all of the retail stores airside. There is plenty of height to allow for a really nice second floor lounge with perhaps floor to ceiling glass windows to allow for a view of the departure lounge and gates. Access to this lounge would be via an escalator similar to many other airport lounges. I would even go so far that the Jetstar lounge stays where it is now but there would be an escalator near the Jetstar lounge entrance up to the new Virgin lounge.

I wouldn't want to be sitting on top of the shops...seems tacky with a limited view.

Ideally, a new building on the southern end of the airport would be built. I'm thinking where you drive in, near the taxi area. Clear security, walk down an enclosed area to the lounge and then once your flight has started boarding you exit directly onto the tarmac and get escorted to your plane. Could get one of those syd style premium entry things going too... although the market may not require it at a touristy location like the GC.

Anyway, see my image below:

Weird unrelated point but i had no idea the border cut through the airfield like that. Maybe Virgin should try and start a bidding war between the two states to lure the new lounge :)

Yeah, it's weird. Half the runway is in QLD, other half in NSW.

I can't see the lounge being built there, if you've actually been there you can kind of understand why, that's where a lot of the ground crew park their stuff. Not to mention the passengers at Gate 1 walk through there to get to their aircraft.

Hmm not too sure about that area there. It seems too far away from the action, and if you had bags to check you'd need to walk a very long way from the very far end of the terminal to the other very far end.

I still think above the shops would be fine. I've seen this style of lounge in plenty of airports around the world.

No reason they couldn’t do something similar to SYD F and plant a sky box on the top, but I’d think expanding the airport terminal area and planning for this to be a little more in the future than next year would be the way to go.

Sometimes people build airports in the silliest places… with limited room for expansion.
