The changes were needed because the system was being abused - all the way to Parliament Hill according to the conservatives, but I have also seen it first hand. So now employers will have to pay more than lip-service to trying to find someone locally before importing cheap bodies, and also it will not be as cheap as before. Boo-hoo. If the businesses are motivated by filling a needed position rather than exploiting cheap imported labour, then they are still able to do that. It will be interesting to see the impact of this change, and anyway - it is much the same story as the tax system. Once a rort gets out of hand the government acts to close any loopholes and make sure the scheme is acting as intended. What else would you have them do?

49 infringement notices out of 22450 sponsors - whoop de doo. Average salary about $85K per year, so reasonably well paid people, people in fact whom pay net positive income tax to Australia. Mrs Lovejoy called - she wants her "moral panic" back.....

I have seen it first hand in my workplaces as well, its been great working with professionals from different parts of the world and without them I would have been short of a few specialists to assist me in getting projects done.

There's a decent future for many of them in used car selling when they give up their day jobs and feel like a boost in their trustworthiness ratings.
Um, for most of them, there's a decent future ahead.

I got a note in the mail today. My pension went up a few cents a day.

Ah but times change and we have to adapt isn't that the eternal excuse trotted out.

All that changed was that he had the numbers and his ego took over

You're wrong about what changed. All that change was the numbers. His ego has remained the same.

I'm sure that most of the businesses were doing the right thing, just as most people would still pay tax even if the ATO were unlikely to prosecute. But a minority of employers saw it as a cheap and disposable labour scheme, and rather than shut the whole thing down the government has made it harder to rort the system. Isn't that what we would expect them to do?

Anyway - I'm glad it has worked for you but I have seen first-hand the way it also wasn't working, and very much doubt that the real level of rorting was less than 1%. As I said .... it will be interesting to see the impact of the new rules on the scheme.

Interesting to see folk like Wong and Shorten explain their reasons for switching sides.

They supported her through three contests in three years and she didn't change her spots. She grew in stature, I think, over that time. But the numbers changed all right. The ALP polling figures went way down.

You really are not a fan? I can understand although a part of me actually likes him. I can't define why. There was nothing I found likeable about Gillard.

Wongs grovelling "I hated to switch but had to" made me retch.

I once again state-Mr.Rudd was planning this for 3 years. So why no policies?
Proof that this has always been about Kevin. No more,no less.
I haven't read any sensible rebuff of this fact.

Yeah. That was sickening.

I'm the other way round. As a person, I like Gillard. I detest her political ways, but she has a human side.

Rudd, well he just smiles to everybody and says nice things, but he keeps his rage bottled up tightly. When the cameras stop rolling, it comes out. You should see the letters page of the Canberra Times. There's a lot of people here who know how he operates.

Um, my comment was obviously in regard to their trustworthiness. Give me a real estate agent or a used car salesman over the likes of Libtika Bourke any day - and she's one of the better ones. Pathetic.

Thank god for social media.

As an ex-PM she may also be up for an office and other such items. Not sure if there is a time limitation for earning the PM perks.

No time limit..for life. Car,driver, office and staff and gold pass re free air travel.. Not sure what Tim is entitled to but I'm sure he's on top of it and will milk it for everything it's worth. No more premium seats at sport though..so sad for him. Not.

Gough is still cashing in......I think the bad ones live the longest. Might have something to do with an "all care - no responsibility" outlook on life;)

Gough stopped enjoying life about five years back. His body lives on, but his mind is elsewhere.

And no, this isn't a crack about Gough - or anyone else. It's just the way things are with so many more people living longer. Buy shares in aged care, folks. It's a growth industry.
