I have no problem with Julia's retirement benefits.Being PM is often a thankless job. Many countries treat their leaders in retirement very much better than we do.Even though some of those leaders have caused immense problems for their countries.

Gough stopped enjoying life about five years back. His body lives on, but his mind is elsewhere.

And no, this isn't a crack about Gough - or anyone else. It's just the way things are with so many more people living longer. Buy shares in aged care, folks. It's a growth industry.

Enjoying life and receiving a pension - are two different things!

1975 was a verrrrrrry long time ago:!:

I've said it before that I'd vote for any government that legalized euthanasia.

Not really, I was a teenager! And I can remember it.

We agree again! I was living in Canberra when Howard negated the Northern Territory law and it really showed the power the government has over us.

I was approaching that range.

These Gov pensions are outrageous. One of my Brothers was a Fed Departmental Head back in the 80's.....he's been living on an enormous pension ever since. 25 years retired (due to health)......pulls in a huge amount & looks like he might give Gough a run for his money in the longevity stakes.

Even if it's a family member - it's disgusting!

We should have powerless governments.

Yeah, I thought that was a backward step. There's a few things we could do. Euthanasia, marriage equality, remove the Queen from our affairs...

Well except for pollies they're closed funds now so eventually all of the recipients will die off.

The retention of pollies super pensions was an amazing example of bipartisanship with a near unanimous vote. It was probably Latham's only (temporary) success in parliament to get the scheme changed even though it was quickly changed back.

Probably the most selfish part of this scheme is that even new members of parliament get access to it. Yet in the public service three are specific cut off dates and three schemes members may be in depending on their join date. The pollies said it would be too hard to do the same for them.

In this regard they are all hypocrites.

Wonder if there will be any comments about Fraser's pension given he was the PM after Whitlam? Or don't we talk about Liberal politicians the same way?

Gough's pension was earned. As was Malcolm's.I don't begrudge either of their pensions.Even Paul's,though my opinion of him cant be printed.

Absolutely agree. Latham can stand tall amongst equals on this issue.

At least Fraser served 8 years (not 3) and didn't get sacked!

Pox on all their houses....

All of the above.

As far as euthanasia you just need to plan before you can no longer plan for yourself.

There are many people contributing to society in a more direct, positive and active way......politician, judges, bureaucrats are nothing special. The fact that receive more than the average citizen is a national disgrace!

I'm sick a tired of listening to politicians state that they are entering public life for the greater good.

Ted Mack was the last & probably the only politician that lived life to that motto!

As a private Physician I get no government pension. Now some will come back and say I got generous tax concessions to contribute to super.my reply-bollocks.It just meant they took less of my money.
However Prime Ministers deserve their pension. They are our Nation's leaders. Some respect is deserved even if we disagree with a lot they did in their time in office. As to the general run of the mill pollie-I agree with you.

My understanding is that judges do fairly well on the pension side. This article suggests Supreme court justices actually get more than a Prime Minister-
