Well that was a waste of a debate. Rudd did his best Milhouse impression, Abbott tried hard not to do his usual dyslexic snake-oil salesman impression (and mostly pulled it off), but the questions from the panel were woeful! After one of them I was totally confused as to what the question was and who it was directed to, and I was relieved when Rudd was equally puzzled. Didn't someone think to vet the questions first???

I don't know who the moderator was, but there was a while where it appeared that he was the third candidate - he certainly did more than his fair share of talking. It gets a bit tedious with these journalists who believe that they are the story.

So the answer is what? Let everyone in & give them a house & benefits
Of course. Obviously the only possible alternative to "<push> off, we're full" is "come on in and take as much as you want".

The ACT local government elections, OTOH, provide endless scope for amusement. No above-the-line voting, plus Robson rotation plus five or seven members elected in each electorate.

The local council elections in the ACT are a joke, foisted on us by the Feds, can't recall if it Lab or Lib?

I'd like to know why the leader of the party representing 10%+ of the Australian population wasn't on the "leader's debate".

On The Insiders last week, someone said that a vote for Kevin Rudd is a vote for Malcolm Turnbull.

That's one way of changing the broken record we have to listen to.

You do realise that the bloke you are going to vote for is on the same page as that? Actually, he'd rather turn them back so they sink their own boats. Be proud if that when you vote.

How do you know how I'll vote - I haven't even decided yet!

It's very clear. A vote for Rudd = no more boat people EVER becoming citizens.

What does something like that mean in a historical sense......no Vietnamese for a start. Can you live with that?

Much easier to use "illegal" compared to the words "asylum seekers/ economic refugees supporting illegal people smugglers and corrupt Indonesian officials and with a death wish that often also causes innocent children to die"
Hook, line, and sinker.

Unfortunately with current global political issues there are 40m+ refugees plus a lot more economic refugees and due to our attractive social security Australia is an attractive country. We can afford to be generous but there does need to be a limit and I qould prefer a managed process where we can select the most at risk/ the most deserving rather than what is effectively Russian roulette for those with $$$s to their name.
Why anyone thinks being able to scrape together enough cash to pay a people smuggler automatically means you can't be a genuine refugee, is a bit beyond me.

David Speers, Sky News political editor. The only time I hear from him is at election time as I don't have pay-tv.

You mean fleeing poverty?
I see you're another person who believes middle-class people can't be persecuted. Presumably you were sleeping through your history lessons at school.

Either way no because that's unknown and like Mr Rudd says we should deal in facts.
Hardly seems a fair comparison, then.

Because the other 90% get irritated by her and they only have 1 soon to be 0 in the house of reps
Ah, so only viewpoints that don't irritate people should be debated ? I guess that's one way of making the debates shorter.

Thanks for highlighting the brokenness of how our votes are distributed.

Because it's only 10% I.E. bugger all!
Someone else terrified of democracy, I see.

Aboriginals make up less than 10% of the Australian population. Would you argue they shouldn't have a say in how the country is run ?

Did I say that???
What I do know is that there are a large number of refugees without money to their name, in many cases to the point where they are still stuck in the country in which they are persecuted, or in a UN camp just outside the conflict zone. These are the far more deserving refugees, versus someone who is already far away.

And how many asylum seekers have died under the ALP's management of the problem compared with the Coalition?
That's the bottom line for me. The boats are unsafe, vulnerable people die. We don't encourage airlines with horrific safety records to fly here, so why should we encourage thousands to put their lives at risk on overcrowded old trawlers?

And, looking at one response to this point, it is ridiculous to say that refugees die because they have to remain in their home nations being persecuted/tortured/pogrommed etc. They don't board boats in Pakistan or Afghanistan - they fly to Indonesia and commence the short sea crossing to Christmas Island there. Or they select another destination. Most refugees do.

The Pacific Solution effectively stopped the boats, but also increased our refugee intake. Big win all round.

Rudd Mk I scuttled that positive outcome and to this day refuses to accept his error.

You have demonstrated several times in the thread that you either don't read or you ignore what people write. So, in case you overlooked/ignored/misunderstood what I wrote ... Both major parties have inhumane and embarrassing policies. That kind of suggests I don't agree with either yet you found a way to twist that to make it sound like I am against immigration. You could get a job at the Telegraph!
