Platinum Card, what will I get for $900

I'm about to sign up Can someone please let me know if it's a bad idea to sign up to plat for $900 to get the bonus points? Is $900 worth it just for the bonus points?

My view is for year 1 it's wel worth it for the points (is it still 80k?) and they're flight with the supplementary reserve card (though I chose free edge as better earn rate for petrol / supermarkets)

I'm coming up for my year anniversary soon and definitely not gonna pay for a second year. Will likely keep the edge though as can justify that with the higher points earn and free flight

I am looking at the fine print for the recommend a friend signup for plat charge 80000 points, and it has it as follows:

If you already have an American Express Card, you will not be eligible for the bonus Membership Rewards points as this offer is not valid for upgrading Cardmembers. Please allow 8 to 10 weeks for the Bonus Points to be awarded once approval is made. Offer expires 31 December 2012. Subject to the Terms & Conditions of the Membership Rewards program.

Since I already have the EDGE card does this mean I won't get the 80000 sign up bonus???

Correct you wont be able to sign up with the refer a friend bonus, you can sign up with the normal 75000 bonus on their website. But your friend obviously wont get the referral bonus and in my experience you are going to have to wait the 2 - 3 months for the points rather than the instantaneous posting of referral points.

Also I noticed you stated above you were thinking of just getting the Edge waived instead of accepting the reserve as well. If you think you can make use of the extra flight, I would suggest having both. Considering it appears you are only get the platinum charge for bonii anyways.

Thanks for your reply. So with the referral I won't get 80000 bonus points since I hold a plat edge CC. While if I apply online for the 75000 bonus points offer I will get it since I don't have a charge card previously. Very strange why they won't allow the refer a friend to work

You could always sign up for the card, wait for the points to post / clear, then cancel it and get a refund on the fee.... total outlay could then drop to $225 or so.

It is not necessarily because you are already an amex customer, but you have been approved straight away. Same happened for me when I did the upgrade, but my mate had to wait for the approval process.

Not really, I mean you've never enjoyed those benefits before the enhancements came along and took it away.

I suppose Amex needed new blood to replace some of us who have exiled across to the likes of Citi Select. Well I'm in the process of anyway.

A one time 12 month deal of CX Gold status with the Charge Card.

Personally once I'm back from my upcoming holiday (booked when the old Ts & Cs were in effect) I'm ditching the card thanks to the "enhancement" of the Travel Insurance and the "enhancement" of the points earning. Might have a look at the Qantas Ultimate card.
