A free flight too?, what is the deal on that?

I have already travel insurance inc with my ANZ (not Amex ANZ) Platinum Visa Card.

The short version. The Amex Platinum Charge card comes with an Amex Platinum Credit card that includes a free flight.
The Amex Platinum Charge card has (IMHO) better Travel Insurance than the others.

Rather than writing it all again could I suggest that you go back to the earlier part of this thread where it is all spelt out.

Signed up today on the 75,000 points offer. I think there is some decent value on the Platinum charge card for me - even at $900.

I wouldn't have signed up without all of the info offered in this thread so many thanks for the excellent posts. :)

What sort of document do you receive for the travel insurance when you get your kit?

Not being a pessimist but playing devil's advocate: should you be taken to hospital in an emergency what do you need to show the hospital in the way of proof of insurance.

I'd want to have some kind of travel insurance policy number as the hospital will need to verify those details so they know they'll get paid.

Some hospitals have been known to virtually leave people in the gutter if they think they won't be able to pay or don't have proof a third party will foot the bill.

IIRC the policy documents for each policy are included in the Platinum welcome pack - never heard anything but positive feedback from people using the insurances.

So, if the cardholder earns $100,000 when they apply, but retires in a year or two on a lesser yearly superannuation pension are they still eligible to keep the Plat card?

This would only become an issue if you tried to spend out of pattern and proof of income or assets were requested. Salary is not reassessed following application.

Not having been in this predicament, I would have thought that a call (free call if operator assisted - although that's another story) to your friendly Amex Platinum Concierge would sort that dilemma out (I'm assuming you are in a position to speak and that a phone is reasonably handy - amongst other things). This is one of the joys of having the card, in fact the more you use them, the better value the $900 becomes.

2. I've found both the $450 bluemoon offer and the $900 75000 point bonus offer - I doubt there's a way of getting both. (or even applying through my professional organisation for $700).

Which professional organisation is this? I've been looking for a discount on the Platinum Charge Card through the AMA but haven't seen one advertised at all.

Applied for $900 Amex Monday last, heard nix, does it take awhile for them to process the application?, thought al least they would confirm it has been received.

I found it was about 2-3 weeks when applying for my Plat C/C. IIRC I actually called them and they gave me an update, and confirmed they had received it etc.

After reading all the posts indeed it sounds like the Platinum card is worth the $900 yearly fee... however I have a question regarding the additional Platinum credit card that comes with it...

I plan to use the Platinum (charge) card exclusively for business use, therefore I would use the credit card for personal use... will I be able to get an additional credit card for my wife? I know I can get an additional charge card for her but as her spend would be personal I don't want to mix my business usage with her personal usage...

Anyone out there can confirm this?

Thanks/MP

Hi MP

Did you know on the Platinum Charge Card you can get an AC card in you name, so in essence you can have one card for Personal Spend, and the Other for Business Spend both in your name. Whilst you will still only get one monthly statement, it will show the 2 card's transactions in separate sections on your statement. Your wife's can also have a supp card on Platinum charge, again with separated reporting on your statement

This means that you can then accrue all you points for transfer to QF if that is what you want.

You can get supp cards on Platinum Credit as well.

Thanks, I didn't realise I could get 2 x charge cards in my name to separate personal & biz spend. I think the only issue is that if I mix spend on the charge card then the $900 annual fee is unlikely to be (fully) tax deductible... so I think this would be the best way to set things up in my case...

1. Charge Platinum in my name, only for biz expenses (making the $900 tax deductible as I'm self-employed)

2. Charge Platinum in Ms MP name, never used (but issued to take advantage of travel insurance)

3&4. 2 x Credit Cards in Mr & Ms MP names for personal expenses

Do you see any disadvantages using Credit instead of Charge cards for personal expenses?

thanks
MP

The biggest downside is you don't get the purchase insurance if you use the credit card and the car rental insurance only applies if paid for with the charge card. As for the rest there's not a big difference, unless you anticipate putting more than $100,000 a year through the credit card, when the rewards drop to 1 point per dollar.

Hi MP

I agree with gibspmuh that there are some benefits of the Platinum Card insurance that may be beneficial...and of course the ability to transfer points to QF.

The only suggestion I can think of is the Platinum SBS card which Amex offers....aimed at small business, which cannot be challenged as being a business expense for tax deduction.

There are a number of great products in their Platinum portfolio now, and the complimentary Credit Card with the Platinum Charge product is a great combination. I am not sure, but don't think you can get the free Plat Credit with the SBS Plat Charge.

Sorry about the typos in my last post....embarrasing to see them replayed...one day I will learn to reread what I have typed!

Happy decision making

Thanks for the advice... one last question, you mentioned "ability to transfer points to QF"... but really this is the same for both Charge and Credit cards (besides the $100k limit for the CC), right?

If you have the Platinum Charge then the points you earn from the Platinum Credit will also be able to be transferred across to QF as well - no worries.

The short version. The Amex Platinum Charge card comes with an Amex Platinum Credit card that includes a free flight.

The following Amex Platinum Charge Card link states that the complimentary Amex Platinum Credit Card comes with free domestic Qantas return flight. Which card exactly is it? I thought that it would be the Amex Platinum Reserve Card but the free flight offer is on Virgin Blue not Qantas.

I think you will find that they just have not updated the text yet to reflect the change to all of their plat cards and atht the flight is now a Virgin one, and not Qantas.

The plat CC you get now is the Reserve = Virgin Flight.

Or at least this is what I was told when I rang about the Charge card and they went through the benefits.

I was told that told too. Just activated my card. Delivered 8 days after application. (Quite impressed with that.)
