Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Interesting discussion on thoughts about vaccines and impact on international travel for Singapore (second half of story):

Husband has booked a London points trip for sept
Looking at booking a London trip early Dec for both of us, again on points
Looking at booking a trip to Tokyo sometime prior to Dec using the vouchers I still have (I didn't bother cashing them out )
Even if for whatever reason they don't happen ....it is nice to have something to look forward to at least for a while

Absolutely understand, personally think London Sept maybe 15% chance, London Dec 40% chance, Tokyo 75% chance.

I am in QFF now contemplating best odds of doing something mid Sept. Prefer Indonesia, but maybe just book Singapore, as if that ain't open to Aussie's in Sept, nothing will be.

I do agree....but...at least it is booked of he is able to go.

Singapore’s been open to most* Aussies for months, just that the Australian government won’t allow short term departures and still require 14 days hotel quarantine on return.

* currently not allowing short term visitors who have been in NSW in previous 14 days

You know what I mean - mum & dad letting me out the backyard to play............................

Tokyo 75% chance.
I consider that quite optimistic. To the tune of around 74%pt.

I’m heading back to Tokyo this week to work on my country’s delegation to an Olympics I see virtually no prospect of occurring.

Tokyo will be effectively in a state of emergency from this Friday with the restrictions to be ramped up from next Monday. Even their emergencies are gradual.

Trying to be a bit optimistic. You may a bit pessimistic.

Japan PM stated Olympics will go ahead hell or high water, even with no fans. Admire his spirit, but COVID 19 undefeated so far. Cross fingers.

Being selfish, would love to sit in front of TV in August watching all the events. If it doesn't happen as planned, probably kiss bye bye to 2020 edition of Olympics and look forward to LA 2024 (if COVID impacts this in any way, we are well and truly in the sh*tter).

Keep in mind it could be more freight related, even with minimal pax there is still good money in that. Would be good news for sure, but perhaps best not to read into it too much....

To give you an idea of the vaccination rollout ..... BoJo has just stated that at absolute best, of the 9 groups specified to target first in the vaccine they're aiming to have the first dose (only) complete by mid-February. Until then England is in full lockdown including schools closed, etc. Getting vaccinations rolled out, even with Oxford being available is going to be a very long process.

Bojo implied that if everything goes well, restrictions will begin to ease mid-Feb, but that definitely won't happen. The vulnerable population amounts to about 14 million people. About 1 million people in the UK have been vaccinated, meaning they need to go at a rate of about 2 million people per week (from now) to vaccinate those people (with only the first dose).

As I had mentioned before, at least here in the UK, as bad as things are now, the worst is yet to come. A new record high cases today, deaths have increased 20% over the last week, hospitals are at breaking point and there is a shortage of approximately 40k nurses in the UK.

While I'm still skeptical, according to Ben from OMAAT, it seems like crew have been contacted by QF to get ready for training in anticipation of these new schedules: Qantas To Resume International Flights In July 2021 | One Mile at a Time.

This is definitely exciting news, even for skeptics like me haha.
Love if this was the case, but I'm skeptical as well, and even though ambitious and unlikely to occur, QF wouldn't want to have egg on their face with planes and staff not ready in the unlikely even they can fly 1/7/2021.

Here's hoping Scomo & Hunt's travel ban only get's extended twice more, 17/3 to 17/6, then again 17/6 to 17/9. Maybe, just maybe, Saturday 18th September we can go somewhere, let's not get ahead of ourselves and think UK/USA, maybe closer to home, Singapore/Vietnam/etc. A start's a start!

Once there’s TGA approval, and we get into the vax program, there should be no excuse to prevent those vaxed to travel in/out of Oz (taking into account the immunity timeframe).

I read on AFR (paywalled) this morning that AstraZeneca vax deliveries are due here in January and February, with 1.9 million doses in each of those months. So, it’s a start. Another 50 million doses to be produced by CSL in Melbourne, at some point.

So, maybe travel earlier rather than later.

Cross fingers, opening border first problem maybe solved, but then getting back and how they respect the vaccine and quarantine requirements? TBA.

I read on AFF that our government has a master plan. 😉

Doesn't look like Qantas has updated their travel policy to reflect the resumption of international travel from July :( Was looking for some reassurance of ability to change dates if prevented from travelling due to the pandemic. Hopefully they will update it soon.
