Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Yea I know. Isreal is up to 15% vaccination and infections still rising. SO it looks like vaccines do not limit the spread. At this stage, it looks like vaccines do not prevent you from catching covid-19 and spreading it. it merely makes your symptoms go away so you don't know you are sick.

If the overseas case numbers do not drop in response to a vaccine, the only answer is wait until all of Australia is vaccinated. Because that way when the floodgates open and there is a surge in infections in Australia, atleast people won't get sick from catching COVID-19 from overseas.
But McGowan wants his state to be absolutely COVID free, no matter the cost. He may close his airport if Scomo allows international travellers in.

As do the other states except possibly NSW. Victoria is now just as bad as WA

Vaccines may or may not limit spread. (Or rather individual vaccines as they may all act differently)

However using that as a data point is not valid as:
1/ They have not been vaccinating long (from 21 Dec) and it takes a little while for the vaccine to become fully effective
2/ 15 % is way too low a % to reach herd immunity like levels.

The first vaccination administered in Israel was on 19th December, to their PM, only 18 days ago. To be followed by the booster, three weeks after.

Early days yet. 😀. Patience Grasshopper.

PER Airport did a pretty good job of destroying their own business even before we caught whiff of covid 😂

Won't happen, once March rolls around and then vaccines start rolling out WA will start talking a lot more sense. You watch.

Agreed. Even if our family members are overseas, we can still lead a normal life and work and earn money and video chat everyday which is still better than the poor aviation and travel staff who cannot even do their career anymore.

The Premiers and Scomo seem intent on burning all aviation, travel and higher education industries to the ground.

And when Qantas tries to bring up hope, the fed gov shuts them down again. Back in June last year, Qantas kept on saying July 2021 as the restart so they were not out of line to assume that. But the feds have other plans.

Considering Greg Hunt keeps on saying Oct 2021 as all vaccinations complete, July represents about 50% vaccinations done.

Are we to assume that international travel will not resume until ALL vaccinations are complete ?? It certainly looks like it.

At this rate, they will have to reinstate jobkeeper to the original rate for aviation and tourism and continue it right until end of 2021. You can't really expect business to remain open for an entire year at the reduced rate.

Yeh you're right. The federal government has shown they don't really care about aviation/tourism. I'm still of the opinion current measures (hotel quarantine/caps on pax) will not be moved till 2022.

I don't see the whole population being vaccinated as the key incentive to open up borders again, I think the government, as it has done with the vaccine will just take its sweet time and think about everything after everyone has received their second jab.

I expect the special National Cabinet will give us an inkling, but once all who can/wantto be vaccinated are, then what would be the reason to keep us locked up?

Depends which Premier has an upcoming state election ;)

What the states fail to understand (or simply don’t want to understand) is the second people start being vaccinated the number of asymptomatic carriers will increase significantly and there is a very good chance that case numbers will soar for a time until the population is ‘fully’ vaccinated and also thereafter as the virus travels, mutates etc. What then?

What then?

There appears extant a complete failure by all governments to prepare everyone for a potential new world order post mass vaccination.
They must know or have a fair idea ; perhaps using the vaccination carrot as a tool to calm an increasingly querulous constituency.

There are so many unknowns ; so much hope and a simplistic blind faith that vaccination will return the world to normality.

It will give us nothing. Nothing is what we will get for the next 6 months.

2nd half of 2021 we may get meaningful info on what is happening re: borders and hopefully we will be able to leave the country for leisure purposes and return under acceptable measures. Again, hopefully this permission to leave will come well before end of 2021.

I agree re no info for the next 6 months. Unfortunately though I don't see travel for leisure purposes out of Aus before mid 2022.

It’s been stated the main topic will be the proposed treatment for the UK strain, which now could be from anywhere (and how long does genomics take to confirm???)

i am aiming, hopefully, for an o/s trip in maybe 2024. i have a couple of medical issues, and must have travel insurance and my vacc.

At this stage I would suggest the 2nd half of 2021 would be a somewhat reasonable target to find out meaningful information on borders within Australia and assurances around them, before we even think about international.

If we can only travel in 2024, I think Flight Centre shares should be worth about $0.10, not $15.

I think by early, if not mid 2022 we should all be in the air (pretty much) where we want to go in the world.

European summer for me mid 2022, maybe fly to Singapore and hitch a ride the slow way on a cargo freighter to the Med via the Suez Canal.
