Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

We are there for 4 days, wondering if we can do a PCR test for the day 2 arrival test and have it double as the 72 hour pre-departure test back to Australia?
Why not. I've been planning on something like this too

Yep, makes sense, although I don’t know if the day 2 test (even if it’s PCR) will give you the right certificate to meet the pre-departure requirements of the Aust Govt / Qantas

For those planning on using a Day 2 PCR test as the PCR test for Australia, I don't see any issues with that, although I haven't done that so I can't say for sure that it'll be ok.

One thing you need to take note of however is that you need to make sure the company will issue a fit-to-fly certificate, as many of them don't and just send you an email notification saying you're negative.

The PCR test certificate requirements for entering Australia are fairly exacting

However, last time I entered Australia I had a test certificate that didn't formally comply, but it was the only sort available in Somaliland where I checked in and accepted as such.

It was never asked for on entry to Australia so the attitude of the checkin person would be critical.

Cheers skip

Exactly this. No issues in doing so, but you need to make sure it's a company that will be able to issue you a certificate / e-mail with the relevant information. PDF cert would be prepared over an e-mail for obvious reasons.

This is what I’ll be doing. Get back from Portugal, do a PCR test at stansted airport and then use that to come home.

FYI for anyone applying for a family member travel exemption - I got my parents approved within 7 days. As Matt indicated on the pod, different story with visas. My parents luckily got the visa fee waived as a result of not able to utilise a previously approved visa due to COVID but require to do again biometrics. If anyone is wanting an updated timeline for relatives applying for a subclass 600 visa I'm happy to provide an update.
Just with this one, my parents completed biometrics today and got told visas would be issued in 4-6 weeks, got notified of approval 2 hours later… so in all 7 days from when we made exemption request and visa application. Happy days!

Does anyone know what is happening with direct flights to BNE from overseas? We should be in home quarantine stages by then. But no airline has seats direct from DXB, AUH, DOH or SIN to BNE in late January, but plenty of seats via MEL or SYD.

I don't want to be stuck in MEL or SYD!

Probably waiting until QLD opens fully
If I’m running a airline no way am I sending my aircraft to states that aren’t fully open

Perhaps the airlines don’t want to have to deal with the complexities of Queensland?

Much easier to just focus on Sydney and Melbourne.

But the planes are physically coming in. There are plenty of seats FROM BNE to SIN or DXB. So why can't they book the inbound seats and leave it to the pax to comply with the Covid requirements? I am ok with 14 days HOME quarantine, just not hotel quarantine.

Wouldn’t QLD still have a inbound cap in place?

If I am reading correctly, at 80% QLD double vaxxed you have to be in Australia (SYD. MEL or whatever) for 14 days before you can come back to QLD if you have been overseas? You can't transit MEL or SYD to direct connection to BNE and then home quarantine.

Looking at Jan, we should be 80% by then.
I doubt we will ever get 90% unless Anna starts requiring vax passports for pubs, clubs, sports, non-essentials.

I can understand why they wouldn't, they then end up with possibility of passengers being "stranded" at airports and being (somehow) held responsible for it in the media. Is it uncapped arrivals?

But would the QLD government "allow" (in the knowledge they can't stop this) an international arrival to be on the same aircraft as a domestic traveller given the covid "risk" from international travel?

(please note the careful use of the quotation marks...)

They can require one of those declarations that you have not been overseas in 14 days. I had to do that even at the salon! I wouldn't take the risk to lie and get in trouble.

I think for now it's easier to just fly into Melbourne or Sydney with the abundance of seats and then wait 14 days there...
From there, we would be then able to fly into the Republic Of Queensland.

I am currently looking at tickets to fly to Europe and the UAE for a week of two.

Then I will just have to work from Melbourne/Sydney with my laptop as I live in a share household in Brisbane and the quarantine duration/settings aren't still really clear for QLD...
Ridiculous but can't wait to leave now.

I doubt the Commonwealth would be enforcing airline obligations on uplifting pax back to point of origin should they denied entry to the 'Sovereign' state of Queensland. They'll be stuck in the area between the end of customs and the street. In fact the AFP would have no obligations to detain them... that would require the Queensland Police to do that at the end of the 'Commonwealth Designated Place'.

Tricky one though as the airport boundary is AFP jurisdiction not just the end of customs. The real legally-defined 'boundary' is likely some distance from the terminal where the land ceases to be Commonwealth/Crown.
