Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

How long do AFFers reckon before quite a few foreign airlines announce greater frequencies, or resumption of flights, into and out of Oz to commence from April or May 2022, or upon the 'northern summer timetable' starting?

Unfortunately these individuals are huge in number in Victoria - perhaps still a majority of the adult population. Crazy and ill-informed: the whole lot need to travel if physically able to broaden their feeble minds.

It’s one thing to announce frequencies… it’s another to fill the flights. QF announced lots of new flights, then promptly cancelled any that weren’t making them money :(

My upcoming trip had the option to fly Etihad on the way home from Europe, but I don’t know whether they’ll fly as planned. How will they fill their planes? At least flying home with Thai I feel more confident that the flights into and out of bangkok can at sustain themselves with holiday makers…. compared to Etihad that doesn’t have that benefit.

That's precisely my interest.

If the airlines introduce more flights, other things being equal, fares should decrease from what I'd assert is their current 'elevated' level to put it nicely. The seating capacity will rise more quickly than bottoms to occupy them.

We will now be the most open country in the world. Hope it works out...

But who cares about a few more over-60's dying an unpleasant death?

Etihad have been flying to and from Sydney for most of not all of the last 2 years, I would prefer them and EK and Qatar to be more reliable than QF for getting to and from Europe...

Maybe they have… but the flights we had booked for January to europe and back were cancelled.

Actually only one flight was cancelled but it meant the whole itinerary was unflyable… they got us there, got us back to AUH on the return - like they had to under EC261 - but then refused to put us on the connecting flight home due to ‘no award seats’.

sorry to hear - I'm flying EY back from Rome in April hopefully things will be ok by then

But who cares about a few more over-60's dying an unpleasant death?

While I don't want to go OT for long, cancer can be a 'very unpleasant' death with slightly under 50000 of us (of varying ages, but many 'over 60') succumbing to one form or another in a 'normal' year.

Bans on elective surgery may worsen the outlook for many with health problems. Yet this continues to mostly be the case (save for IVF) in Victoria, and was in NSW until sensibly lifted.

I've not checked in the last three or four weeks but the median age of 'dying with COVID-19' was initially 86 in Oz, then became 85. This lifespan is above the median age of death for the general population from all causes. As the PM reinforced today, many may die 'with COVID-19' but far fewer die 'of' it. That's an important distinction.

If you wish to stay under a bedspread for your years left on this earth, be my guest. But please don't expect the majority of the population anywhere worldwide (if they live in a democracy) to do that.

This is what 'The Australian' suggests about testing:

What about testing?

Depending on which states they plan on travelling to, international arrivals may need to get a PCR or rapid antigen test after they arrive. Individual states and territories are expected to make announcements about what their conditions are. The federal government has not yet announced whether pre-departure testing will be scrapped.

Thanks for finding this update!

- After you arrive state requested test who cares, no one will do it

- It’s the pre-departure one which is the real handbrake. Fully vaccinated travellers should be completely exempt. At worse a self reported RAT, max.

I see in the backblocks of the WA announcement that WA is putting its cap back to 530 a week, not sure from when. Baby steps back.

Cheers skip

It'll take until next year for any business/traveller/government department to put trust back in dealing with WA with certainty. Going to Europe twice this year but will go out of my way and spend more if needed to avoid Perth as exit and especially re-entry. Too much risk.

I have been researching flights in October to Amsterdam and in November from Bucharest. Because the Bucharest outbound is with FlyDubai, the whole journey has to be with Emirates. There goes 570 SC and 49,875 FF points! 😩
At least I’ll get to use the top lounge in Dubai. I’m now waiting to see if J prices come down. It will be nice if by then we don’t have to keep abreast of testing before and after, or during. I want to travel easily again!

If you are chasing SC’s Wouldn’t it be better and cheaper to book a return flight to AMS and then just get a 1 way flight from BUC-AMS?

Can't fly BA OTP-LHR and then pick up EK (or another OW option)?

Testing really needs to go.

Hopefully they will announce the removal of testing requirements (pre) in next few weeks once the Doona brigade has calmed down.

Tourism chief fires warning as international border reopening date unveiled

Australia has been “a little bit ridiculed” around the world for its strict COVID-19 border closures and rules and could fail to regain its share of global tourism dollars even when the border reopens in a fortnight, the head of Tourism Australia has warned.

As Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced vaccinated tourists will be able to enter Australia from February 21, Tourism Australia managing director Phillipa Harrison told a Sydney audience the negative sentiment had started to show up in recent market research.

Business and tourism groups welcomed Monday’s border announcement but used it to turn the screws on Western Australia, which delayed plans to open to the rest of the country last week and is unable to provide a plan for rejoining the world.

Aside from WA, they're still ahead of NZ who is ridiculed even more.........

Would that I could. The flights are included in an overall package. The option to fly Qatar is a possibility. But I will look into that.

It's not just the countries that need to ditch pre-flight testing. As a fully vaxxed person I would not need a negative test to enter Turkey. Turkey will accept either a vax cert or a negative test. But SQ requires the test just to transit SIN for a few hours even without leaving the airport. And I had to use SQ because I had some 75k expiring in April (that may have been extended or not).
