Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Interesting perspectives here. I’m a rusted on Liberal voter, and the thought of voting to the left horrifies me, but, I’m mad as hell at the state of international border restrictions and related messaging.

At the next state and federal elections I will be preferencing labor ahead of liberal for the lower house. Not because I want a labor government, but because I detest the current mob and what they’ve done.

It’s a shame there isn’t a concerted ‘open the borders’ political movement that people could get behind.

@roogirl - as you live in the UK, you’re well out of touch with the feelings of many Victorian residents. Last week the overall community chatter was “just lockdown and get on with it”.

It probably was. Because that’s what they’ve been conditioned to believe. That doesn’t make it right.
Actually no, I would say up until lockdown 4.0 there was a lot more...'this is the state governments fault, lockdown trigger happy' sentiment. Now that they've seen NSW screw things up so badly I sense a lot of that has gone away. Even having lunch with the Heraldsun reading, Andrew Bolt loving, rusted on Liberal voting in laws last weekend there was not a mention of Daniel Andrews...I can tell you this is unusual! Their new favourite thing seemed to be Gladys cartoons in the papers.

I can tell you that some of us in Victoria are still very unhappy with the state government's zero-COVID policy. If we are to open up to resuming some international travel we need to abandon the mad zero-COVID policy.

Unfortunately no.

Do you have proof of this? After all, you're locked down and can't go out, go to work (unless you're an essential worker) or really "interact" with anyone apart from phone/video chat - as many of us including myself do with people in Victoria.

So what is your proof of "community chatter" when there is no community at the moment with Melbourne in its 6th lockdown?

I guess this shows attitudes in different circles with different priorities. Much like nickykim's view, everyone I speak to understands the need to do this. On the day increasing numbers were announced everyone I know preempted a lockdown, and were thankful it was brought in early, and from 8pm.

We may be 'over' lockdowns, but not one person I know has mentioned trolling. The key question is 'what's the motive for the government to troll'? They have mucked things up, but we are where we are. They're not just doing it for the sake of it.

Home Q will be fine. If people are coming back to see family, that's where family will be!

No surprise here, as you are a staunch defender of the government and will back them no matter what they do.

The people who seem to "understand this" seem to be those not heavily impacted by this financially and with no want or need to travel.

While you are happy with lockdowns and border closures forever, and will back the government to the hilt, many thousands are genuinely struggling emotionally, physically and financially.

There are many who say things like, "there must be another way"...but when pressed they refuse to stump up any ideas. Or they compare Australia with countries with 3 times the vaccination rate. I keep asking what the happy medium between covid zero and let it rip is...no one answers.

Well I've never seen your questions - however, the following can be done:

- GET RID OF COVID-0 as any type of goal or statement - IT IS IMPOSSIBLE. Even "fortress Australia" couldn't do this.

- Do not lock down over a handful of cases and trust the test + trace systems.

- If you need to lockdown, give people PROPER notice and ENOUGH time to get their affairs in order.

- Provide PROPER financial support for people struggling - anyone following this knows it is a disgrace that this is not happening properly, particularly VIC where thousands of people can barely afford living costs, and this number is increasing.

- Allow Australian citizens or residents who are fully jabbed to come home outside of caps and quarantine at home for 7 days (get them to test on Day 0 and Day 5 or 6 as well).

- Continue to push and urge everyone to get vaccinated as much as possible - this is an endless and thankless task.

-Based on the fact that the supposed pinnacle of test & trace capabilities failed to manage a handful of delta cases by TTI, national policy has changed, to define lockdown as the preferred policy, until such time as vaccination rates allow other options. Note how even the supposed pinnacle is putting regional LGAs into lockdown now based on 2 cases.

-Giving notice of lockdowns somewhat defeats the purpose. How much notice do you want? In Melbourne's last lockdown 15 people were infected as a result of a lockdown eve dinner at Ms Frankie restaurant after the lockdown was announced to start at midnight. Totally appreciate how cough this is for businesses.

-Agree on the financial support. I'm not sure how Vic is worse than NSW in this regard?

-Not sure about only 7 days home quarantine. What is the scientific justification for this? We certainly have seen people test positive on day 13 tests in the recent outbreaks but its not clear when they tested prior to the 13 day mark. 10 - 14 days seems typical in international comparisons.

-Agree on vaccination.

Well NSW is trying some of this already - or perhaps more accurately ended up trying some of this. Contact tracing is overwhelmed even if they don't admit it.

But this is the prediction of international travel to/from Australia thread....

I would do 21 days home quarantine if that was what was needed to convince the government to let us visit Australian family overseas.

There has to be a sensible middle ground between what we are doing now and fully opening up that can be done now.

First time posting. If I book classic business rewards flight SYD - MAN return for may 2022 on basis borders are open and no quarantine on rtn and aus govt allows that travel. If all those things don’t happen I just cancel and rebook? Any potential pitfalls to tieing up my frequent flyer points?

Don't think so. You'll just cancel and refund at minimal cost.

Society is very binary these days. Middle ground does not exist.

I've done this for May 2022 and actually had two flights booked. Used to take ages to get points back but when I cancelled one last week they were back within 3 days. Just be aware that UK still may have their red alert zones for places like Dubai and Doha.

The truth is once the middle ground is accepted, there is a new binary lol

I think UAE has already moved to the amber list...EK has a CRAZY ad out to celebrate this fact.

Just struggling to understand why you think communities have vanished because people can no longer meet face to face…
