Qantas Business Class meals & menus

I read this thread too much. The menu looked like I’ve been having it for the last two years. Bannockburn chicken ... snapper ...

we were four hours late so the lunch service was begun slightly after 12 which suited me fine. Unfortunately, as usual it was the excruciatingly slow meal and drinks service. I was in the middle of the B787 main J cabin so have opportunity to observe how they went about it and I just couldn’t figure out any system they were following. But oh well, it's their job, not mine, so what would I know?

First the drinks trolley and I asked what white wines they had. Choices were Chardonnay or a rosé. I mean really? Just white one white wine, and a Chardonnay at that? I survived on G&T’s until the main course and then switched to Cabernet to go with the snapper 🤷‍♂️

first course - leaves. they were crisp..

Snapper (you can tell the delay after getting the bread by the level of the wine and lack of bread). Two very large scallops

Then later meal service

Bread

A bit later, chicken curry. This was very nice.

Overall, not bad. Serving portions were good.
I think QF instructs the crew to deliberately take as long as possible to deliver meals so that people choose not to have them , which would lower their costs as they have to load less in the long run. Its AMAZING how slow they are , they could not , generally, be slower if they tried. Its comical.

Did you complain about the lack of roe on the scallops? ;)

I don't think so. That does not make sense

From the CC point of view I think one possible reason is the lack of space for meal prep.
I'm sure it was a tongue in cheek comment. The issue is though that QFi's J meal service is so slow it is actually a major detraction for them. Given they have such a minimalistic menu what are other airlines doing right that QF is getting so wrong?

As I was watching, they just seem terribly disorganised, bringing meals out out seemingly at random with the drink carts parked in the aisles unattended. bringing some bread out and saying the main course will be right here and it’s another 10 minutes later.

Now, they are professional crew and I think it’s observed right across Qantas so it’s not down to the particular FAs. It must be just the way that Qantas mandates things to be done.

crossed my mind, but I didn’t say anything 😊

Other Airlines seem to manage it okay in the same aircraft. In fact a certain airline has so much better plating and presentation it must be much more fiddly and yet they don’t have this time issue.

it’s a puzzle, and of course not the end of the world except for the fact that with the tray out and plates and cutlery sitting there you are pretty much hemmed in for a couple of hours.

I’m doing this route next week. 6pm departure to SIN, hot turn and 6am arrival in JNB. Solves the QF problems.

Have anyone heard on the grapevine whether QF have a product underway to eventually allow pre-flight meal selection? Like several other major carriers in J and F

I think a nice touch would be to introduce pre-takeoff drinks for domestic business class seats, similar to Virgin. I mainly take the SYD-MEL route once or twice a month. Did Qantas ever do this in the past (pre-covid)?

I keep saying this as it’s astounding to me: American keep doing this- pre departure drinks on most flights (dependent on the crew but the standard seems to be yes, do it) and pre-selection of main meal, even on Domestic flights.

You don’t even have to look as far as QR or SQ. If AA can do it and has so for a decade or longer…

I don’t think pre departure drink really needed don’t you want to go to where you wanna go .. maybe people need to toilet afterwards they can’t if the flight is bumpy after take off .

like drink in the lounge or the on the plane ?

But I do appreciate pre departure drinks on int flight it’s a nice touch they do it on trans Tasman tooo

Conversely doesn't boarding start with QF 20 mins prior to boarding and AA 35 mins? I'd rather be in the lounge for the pre departure drink!

I think Qantas is 30 minutes now also and with their new improved boarding process, there should be enough time or even plenty of time for a PDB. Virgin takes orders as individual J pax are seated.

It’s not essential. It’s just a nice civilised way to commence a journey if you are so inclined.

Flying in a premium cabin is about having options. Want to board 35 minutes before and have a drink on the plane, then it's there. Want to stay in the lounge and board last minute, you can do that too.

It's baffling. Qantas staff can be so friendly and attentive, but whether their processes are outlined in a way that makes everything inefficient, or whether they just don't have enough staff on board to make this a swift and well executed experience, or even if the equipment they have isn't specced out to optimise for meal services I don't know. But it is absolutely crazy how long meals can take sometimes.
