Qantas Business Class meals & menus

Friday night's offering MEL - CBR was similarly a chicken salad but with rather chewy grass-like rocket and pretty flavourless chicken. It took me a while to work it that it was the chicken part of the salad :)
Koko Black chocolate as well (and I don't like their solid dark choc much at all).

It's hardly even dark - pretty sure the one I had said something like "58% dark" - whatever that means.

The MEL-CBR-MEL route in J food-wise is a joke. Should have a hot option, and if orders were taken in advance and the trolley dispensed with there'd be more than sufficient time to serve the meal I reckon. My most recent flight (QF link) the Y trolley was wheeled to the front where it waited for approx 6 minutes for the tea and coffee pots. The J service didn't start until after the Y trolley moved. So inefficient.

A couple of years ago on a short interstate I didn't want the only option so the crew checked and then offered me the pilot's hot meal. Apparently the pilots usually don't eat their meal on those short sectors.

CBR-MEL approx 1pm flight on QF Link 717. Called a refreshment. Only one option: chicken Caesar salad. Was ok but of course disappointing for a J flight at lunchtime. What I've come to expect on this route. Was a free upgrade to J so can't complain too much.

That's pretty poor. Not hard to dish up a hot meal - start the heating once taxing commences. They used to do it all the time. ... or if it has to be cold (for some reason despite 5 decades of jet aviation managing hot meals) then have a good filling salad.

Offered soup, corn beef toasted sandwich or chicken and Italian slaw salad

Chose the toasted sandwich this time

Never had a good toasted sandwich on a plane. Very disappointing anytime in J given the cost of flights, but especially when offered at genuine lunch or dinner times.

Flew ADL-MEL the other day at 1pm. I was in Y (row 4, so could see the J service). I got a very nice tomato and cheese focaccia in a box. Pax in J got soup or toasted beef sandwich. Lady in front of me got hers 20 minutes after me, took two bites of her sandwich and left it. Made a comment to the CSM. Wonder if that feedback ever gets through? Sure glad I saved $400 odd on that flight.

Sometimes I have considered asking for whatever's on offer in Y tbh... but I haven't in the end

short sectors like that seems like it's more of a hassle than not. I usually have a drink and MAYBE the "4 nut mix" and just eat either side of the flight.

By 4 nut mix, do you mean the cashews and pretzels??

Completely agree that the short hauls are worthless food-wise in J. Only times I fly them are on tag International flights back to Canberra (outbound I usually book separate tickets so fly Y and save dollars while getting an hour or two more F lounge time!), or on the rare upgrade.

The ADL-MEL flight I mentioned had at least 3 pax in J as travelling staff, and one flying on international next. But if I were a full-fare paying J pax I'd feel very annoyed with that offering on a lunchtime flight.

I agree. The bread has a weird texture. Even on the international breakfasts in J, the toast by itself is still chewy. Either that or it is super dry throughout. I'd rather just warmed bread.

I wish I did on Friday flying SYD-MEL. I had a very boring piece of fish (which was described as just fish - no description what it was), and the dessert was an inedible rock hard slab of sugar in a box (a "cake").

The economy meal boxes as described sounded far more appealing.

Kind of related as the menu is the same as transcon - I've done Trans Tasman J 5 times in the past two months. The new menu rotation is dismal - I've been filling up in the lounge and skipping the meal service onboard (although I usually have a cheese plate a bit later in the flight with some wine).

They were doing so well, but in the past few months the J meal service has just hit rock bottom.

I decided to try VA J MEL-SYD last night as I haven't flown them domestically for ages. The meal was absolutely superb - chicken breast with cashew, rice, and accompaniments, and a cheese plate was served on the same tray for dessert. There were three of us in the cabin (we were the only pax), and I'm told the soup was also quite nice.

I have some Trans-Tasman flights coming up so will also comment. Did an overnight MEL-AKL a couple of days ago which was ok for a supper flight. Crew terrific. Food on this flight always tough to judge given I will always have come from th F lounge.

I've done it a few times on medium haul international J services like SIN-SYD or HKG-SYD where the 'dinner' options have been far less than inspiring (or acceptable, for J). The look on the FA's face after a run down of the menu in J, to be asked "what's on in economy" is almost worth it to ask, on it's own! :D

Cheers,
Matt.

I am not so sure about the lounge food. Sometimes I find it pretty uninspiring in itself, particularly on domestic flights. If you want something apart from a ham/cheese /salad with bread, there are no that many options. Sometime the single hot dish is a bit bland too.

"Caramelised masterstock braised pork belly with jasmine rice and steamed gai lan" was terrific.
Decent portion of pork belly with crispy crackling and tender meat, braised in a delicious sauce - would order again.
Meal service was efficient, crew went around several times for drink top ups and were very friendly.

I agree some of the offerings in J don't really justify the high cost of J tickets.

They should offer an economy catering J offering!!

if only.

The issue is the pricing is not only for the "food" (or even f&b) service. If it was it would be Y+$20 :D
