Qantas Business Class meals & menus

It was actually very tender, more like stewed blade beef rather than a steak per se. The presentation was pretty average i thought!

True- it could look a bit prettier. But it made me instantly hungry so it did do the trick! :D

Dinner SYD-CNS a few nights ago was choice of the lamb chops (exactly as posted above -- and in my view delicious) or a chicken salad.

CNS-MEL 13:15 flight. Lunch choices were barramundi with vegetables or a beet and feta salad. My seatmate devoured the salad (it did look good). Pretty sure everyone else (in rows 1 and 2 at least) chose the barra. The leek(?) was a bit tough but the fish was excellent:

A proper tub of ice cream followed, and my packet of pretzels and almonds contained 7 whole almonds. Amazing.

CSM Michael was excellent. Happily did two drink rounds before lunch. Kept moving through cabin and keeping everyone happy. Have flown with him before a while back but he remembered. Didn't really give me a P1 greeting but knew where I was travelling on to after MEL so had studied his iPad before serving the meals (the exact right time in my view to do any acknowledgements, in J at least).

only disappointment was the water or water pre-departure drink. I thought it was a one-off a few nights before on the flight up but clearly not. What an embarrassment for J.

Plowmans plate (a few pickles, a few pieces of cheese and a slice of ham) or beef toastie or fruit salad

The toasted sandwiches seem always to be drenched in fat!

Hope you ate your greens (kale from the looks of it!)

I did. And it was very good! I've loved kale since I was a boy when a Dutch family friend introduced us to a dish of spiced pork sausages, mashed pink eye potatoes and kale (the latter two home grown on their farm), way back before it became a superfood!

Flight SYD-MEL last Monday, dinner time. The meal was extremely disappointing, pretty much the worst I had in premium class at full meal time in years. This had more to do with my taste but also the available options. If you leave a J class flight hungry, even if it's such a short one, then something is usually wrong in my eyes!

The hot option was a herb crusted fish with fennel (fennel, really? No one who had this option ate the fennel as far as I could see...). I am highly intolerant to seafood but usually okay with smaller amount of fish. However, this fish smelled extremely fishy and on an airplane you rather don't want to risk it (very much in the interest of my fellow passengers, I'm tellin you...).

So I was stuck with the second, cold option and QF seems to think these days that it has to be ultra-healthy. It was offered as a 'Barley and Feta salad" which sounded pretty good at first but unfortunately was totally misleading: There was a thin layer of pumpkin seeds and goats cheese on top (it wasn't Feta but hey, minor detail) which was fine and then under a pile of beetroot (yikes) and the most monstrous chunks of celery (Uber-yikes) you had maybe two spoon full of barley. And to finish me off, it was all served on a bed of my personal biggest enemy, rocket. Plenty of rocket. It should have been called 'Beetroot and Celery salad on rocket', then I would have asked to get me some of the lamb casserole from the back of the plane.

This way, I ended up picking out all the celery (I don't mind this vegetable per se and use it myself in cooking but in very limited quantities. It's one of those things that you better add very cautiously and certainly NOT in huge chunks like in this salad, totally nuts in my eyes), rocket and beetroot (see second image below) which was almost the entire thing:

Hungry and unhappy I went for the desert cake which turned out to be Walnut-Cake. Walnut is the only thing (besides seafood) that I have a real proper allergy towards so even the devil in person could have not selected a worse meal for me. Pumpkin maybe could have been added to make it even worse. And I know, it's hard to believe, but I usually eat pretty much anything, there's not that much that I don't like.

J class flight MEL to SYD yesterday was luckily a much better meal than on the outbound. Choice was lamb chops or a chicken salad and given that the row in front of me was full of fat male business travelers (I was in 2F), I feared that I once again end up with the cold salad. And yes, every single one in row one (of course!) picked the lamb but luckily they had enough on board for me to get the last one (behind me, in row 3, there were many disappointed faces when they had to do with the salad which looked, as per usual, rather sad compared to the hot option).

Now- lamb chops is a bit of a curious choice on an airplane as there's so much cutting and de-boning to do on the wobbly little airplane table (I noticed halfway through that the guys in row 1 did solve this problem in a very stylish way and simply used their hands but found this just a bit too off sitting in the premium cabin). It also lacked some kind of sauce as they only offered mint gelly with it which I politely declined (this is one of those very strange leftovers from the mother land that I will never get into- mint belongs into chewing gum, toothpaste and Mojito but that's it!). As a result, the lamb was sitting in the water from the peas that came with it. Still- I enjoyed this meal much more than the awful salad I had on the outbound. Peas and potatoes went well with the lamb and the latter was actually proper decent quality lamb rather than some old mutton which you often get served as 'lamb' in questionable restaurants.

In addition, they had a choice between a Riesling and a Cabernet which happen to be my favorite white and red grape varieties, respectively. Finished it all off with a nice glass of Scotch and we were about to touch down in Sydney. Very pleasing meal and the crew was pleasant as well. As ever so often, if Qantas does something well, then they do it really well. If not, then good luck :p

Berlin I've had the fish dish twice in the past few days. It is actually very nice. Certainly didn't smell too fishy thankfully. The fennel was inedible first time but second time it was much better.

i will disagree with you on the mint jelly. I love it with lamb! The lamb chops are very tasty but I agree a slightly odd option for the 737 flights with wobbly tray tables.

Qantas by no means alone in this but to not have 12 hot meals for dinner, in winter (even if they are two different ones) is unfortunate -- for row 3 pax more often than not.

Luckily, I never argue on taste and am glad that you like it! :p

I also totally understand that this example on Monday was just really bad luck for me- even a walnut cake for all things, to make sure I hardly get a single bite to eat. I enjoyed the lamb much more and the choices on my trip to LA next week sound all delicious ;)

Out of interest do you happen to know which Riesling it was? Earlier this year they had the amazing Mort Block Riesling which is actually fairly hard to obtain (last I looked even Epiqure had run out of stock) so curious if they are still serving that (been a while since I've flown QF Dom, but will be back next week :) )

Wasn't the Mort Block unfortunately (I remember having that once and agree with you- very nice one!), it was a Dandelion, not sure which vintage.

Service was good, in a nearly full J cabin. Proper drink service to start (and should note a sparkling grape juice was also offered as a pre-departure beverage, not just the embarrassing water or water).

I had the chicken salad then the fish.

Salad was a very generous serve. Unfortunately it was pretty tasteless and I left half of it sadly.

Fish was nice as per previous reports.

was very tempted to have the larb chicken but decided to stick with fish. Fortunately had the exact same menu trans-Tasman out of Sydney two days later and had the larb dish -- amazing and one of the best dishes I've ever had on QF in J or F. Will post that in the Trans-Tasman J thread later.

And then oh my God the sticky date pudding was just amazing. So tasty. Probably shortened my life with the double cream, but worth it.

Im not usually a sweet fan but sticky date pudding is one I will always make an exception for, and this was just fabulous. Went well with a glass of port.
