Qantas Business Class meals & menus

And if you can attract just 1 extra J-class passenger due to better meal service? The additional ca $1,000 fare J-class pax on a 737, x 4 flights a day per aircraft, x 67 aircraft in the fleet... that would add up to an additional $100 million per year...

Let's look at the math... catering cost of about $2-3 per meal? Let's say they were to double that cost... $6 per meal. The additional $3 x 12 pax on a 737, x 4 flights a day per aircraft, x 67 aircraft in the fleet... that would add up to an additional $3.5 million per year. Those figures don't allow for some aircraft that will be out for maintenance, but they also don't include any A330 domestics. The figures really add up.
Take catering in Y away and you make up the cost, and then a lot more!!

...I'll show myself out. ;)

Are QF J pax less 'sophisticated' than J pax on other airlines?

With the developing trend of QF serving up very basic 'pub food' like hot dogs, pies, chicken parmigiana and chicken rolls etc on longer J flights, QF obviously believe their J pax do not want (or will eat) anything less generic.

'Pub food' can be quite enjoyable on occasion, but I do not know if a $2000+ ow J flight is one of those occasions.

One would think that QF did some market research before introducing this 'style' of cuisine and this is what QF J pax asked for...

QF782 BNE-CNS 9:55am departure 6/11

Choices:
Toasted focaccia with cheese, salami, prosciutto, mortadella, tomato
Chickpea salad
Fruit salad

Noted was the orange juice from just juice (the $2 1L packs you get at Coles). I used to remember it was at least a premium fresh orange juice. Sadly another cost cutting measure.

Comments on dom catering:

1. Price is irrelevant given most people in J are either on upgrades/awards or paid through work. YES some people self pay for J (I am one, when a sale appears!!! :D ) but frankly the reason most J cabins are empty till boarding is due to upgrades, staff travel etc. Reality is very few people (yes, there are exceptions I know) fly paid J. Those that do the market is screwing over because there are relatively few of them IMHO.

2. Consider. bar the transcons, the average stage length of QF dom flights... it's 1-3 hours.. specially the triangle MEL/SYD/BNE. If you're in J you can access the lounge. I seriously think QF sees the "meals" as snacks more than actual meals to feel a need. This week I'm doing a 1830 MEL-SYD arriving 1955. In theory a "dinner" flight.. but many would either eat in the lounge prior or have a later dinner in SYD (but it is true QF "dinner" options are, in general, more substantial than the "All Day Dining")

What perpelexes me are the flights like the 649 CNS-BNE (I've flown this a few times myself).. it leaves lunchtime, gets into BNE near 3pm yet you're offered a toastie, soup or salad? If your destination is BNE then you've had a glorified snack till dnner and iif you're going on to say SYD. MEL or ADL where you get offered an afternoon "refrreshment" service in the 3-5pm bank you might get another soup or a cheese box or maybe some sort of "meal" (the toasties seem to dry up by 1pm - pun intended).

I honestly think QF consider you'll eat e;sewhere for these "short" flights (and what do you get foir a CNS-SYD/ME:L extra? like a tub of ice cream extra).

It's very AA in the idea that have some comfort food if you're flying 2-4 hours, I sort of get it, but at the same time there are flights where I get off and think "man I'm hungry but by the time I get to my hotel it's going to be 2030-2100 and food will be downn to Maccas or dial a pizza"

I am looking to book, for example, CNS-BNE-MEL with the 649 as a tag. I start at CNS lunchtime and end up in MEL like 1920 or so.. which is dinner time, but it's posbsible the J meals I will be offered are a soup and a cheese box (and there have been times where I have not had time to even visit the J lounge in BNE but go gate to gate in BNE to connect). you get some food, but if you arrive MEL after 7, the sonnest you'll hit the CBS is most likely about 8 and that starts to find you in a "we're closing soon" situation depending on the day of the week.

I really think QF caters these comfort food optons as "snacks" regardless of if they say "dinner" or "lunch" service... and if you're doing MEL-SYD or v.v. (or SYD-BNE) I could see that, but some of the longer sectors take you out of these windows.

Still though it's, in general, better than what you'd get doing SFO-LAX or ORD-LGA on a US major.. where the most you could extect might be a coughpy wine, a coke and a pretzel mix.

my 2 cents.

Fair enough observation... but then many years ago we used to get a full hot breakfast in both first and business class between Canberra and Sydney. Flying time was around 30 minutes or so? I can't remember anyone sending it back or not partaking. And that was in the days when you could have had as many as 7 or 8 rows of F and then another couple of rows of business class. Granted the refreshments between meals were pretty average, usually just a round of (cold) sandwiches.

Perhaps back then passengers expected a full hot meal a planned accordingly. Now they know they'll only get a bowl of soup and so eat before or after. Maybe it's more a case of the airlines manipulating passenger behaviour that actual demand (for reduced catering)?

I get it. I flew AN MEL-CBR in the 90's in a 727 in F when they were 3 class (can you imagine!) and had the whole silver service and all that.

the fact is.. . times have changed. People want lower prices and now the J meals equate in some way sot what we got in Y back in the day.

Yes, I hear the argument (but it costs $800 one way in J from MEL-SYD)... but that's because most peple in J are either upgrades, on connecting itineraries or their employer is paying that J rate.. very very few are paying the rack rate.

The world has changed. Is it better? Over time, lower fares adjusted for inflation would say so... it's easy for us who remember the "good old days" or even those who say "Well I fly HKG-BKK and get spoiled on a 3 class widebody how come I get a 2 hour 737 flight and get cough in J?" you just can't compare... for all kinds of reasons.. costs, markets, competition etc etc etc

I'm not trying to defend it. I think the QF "comfort food" of toasties or soup or the like is pretty slack and cheap, but compared to the other products out therer that come close (try QF or VA MEL-SYD vs UA/AA/DL SFO-LAX or NYC-WAS and it's stark).

Everyone wants cheaper fares but all the good stuff. There's a poimnt where you can have one or the other but both at the same time? not so easy.

IMHO

QF460 MEL-SYD B787-9
Dinner

Boeuf bourguignon
"dessert" was a sponguey teacake with cream

I noted the new service ware, glasses etc.. not to bad though the wine glass was pretty light and felt flimsy almost plastic...

meal was hot and fairly tasty.20171109_200445.jpg

The damn GB sparkling was horrible. Never again #ChampaneSnob

I had this meal on a flight a couple of weeks ago. I think it was CNS-MEL but not 100% sure. I thought it was very nice. Not a huge amount of beef - probably just as much mushrooms - but it was all tasty.

Korean chicken? sounds interesting for sure

as an aside for these dom 787 flights, the CSM told me they were double catered .... at least for the MEL-SYD-MEL turns. I wonder if that was just because of the very specific carts and new crockerty on these planes or some other reason. It was an interesting tidbit of info I thought.

OOL-SYD

"Braised beef with beans and steamed rice"

yeah well... the rice was a bit burnt and as such was crunchy.. the beef was tender though and quite tasty... but.. yeah

Wine was the 30anniversary labeled Chardonnay. Not too bad
