Qantas Business Class meals & menus

OT but re QF crews "vs" other airlines, AA etc and stereotypes... that's exactly it. Back in the day, those who used to ply transpac on a regular basis with UA used to refer to the "Prison Matrons" (very senior routes) that usually staffed the flights. Sometimes in jest, other times not so much. My point being that it's unfair to label groups as a whole like that - be it QF, AA or whoever - either good or bad (though I'll admit I've never met a sour SQ crewmember...). People are people, some crews are great, most are average to good and some mebers of any airline have bad days or are just bad at their job, or do not want to be there (and take it out on pax) or whatever. It happens.

Personally I find most QF crewmembers to be pretty good. Some amazing and the odd one to be surly or just not there to serve (had one in F one time on a long haul who was really poor).. it happens though. I bet sometimes I'm a grumpy passenger! :) I try to not tar everyone with the same brush though.

imo

First time flying trans-tasman J since before COVID. Lots of changes. Not sure if just the crew.

1. No post takeoff drink and snack
2. No menu (3 choices given when cart came round)
3. No starter
4. Super slow - economy service was almost finished before J started. Got a single tray with everything on it about 1:30 from AKL on BNE-AKL
5. No water
6. No proactive extra drinks refills
Exactly on QF143 Tuesday this week - not good! Compare it to A330 two years ago!

The business international meal service from AKL to BNE 19 May QF 143 was equivalent to the PER to MEL on domestic business. I had asked the training CSM if they did pre dinner drinks. His reply was drinks service was up to the cabin manager in business. This flight is 3.5 hours. So we were served a pre dinner drink.

The meal for 12 passengers in business were 4 beef fillet, and abundant chicken with rice. No cold choice, and indeed I was told this is a catering issue. Too true.

The wine pour was good but in truth this product was poor. I was clearly a squeaky wheel so was given more apologies by the CSM - and a bottle of wine. Nice try and appreciated but the meal selection is abysmal. And the selection a non-selection by getting to 2K.

This meal looks very reminiscent of my domestic flight back in January from SYD > ADL in J on QF (also on a 737):

Then again one has to wonder whether the standards necessarily need to be higher on a slightly longer "domestic" route like AKL > BNE.

I’ve never been impressed by a QF meal, even on long haul. So for the first time in a long time, I looked at the VA meals thread. VA look to be miles in front.
I much prefer the meals on VA but I have given several pieces of feedback to them as I feel they need to rotate the meals more frequently. Whilst I love the meals if you fly frequently with them you get a bit of a run on dishes

Miles in front? I think that's a bit generous. Possibly kilometres in front and certainly metres in front!

For one they offer a variety of PDBs, not a sorry bottle of water:

And the meal ain't bad either:

I will give QF that their bread is richer, though.

QF1562 LST-SYD 20MAY22 scheduled dep 1350, actual dep 1550 due to late arriving aircraft from Sydney (weather)

Lasagna - her comments "big portion, it was fine, it's pretty hard to stuff up Lasagna". Other option was pork something, she couldn't catch exactly what the FA said.

QF945 BNE - PER Sun 22/05/22
A stressful day, delayed flight but a good one in 1A (738) once we got going. Good service from FA Kathleen, pre dinner whisky followed by beef with rice (specifics hard in these days of no menus) and washed down with a Grant Burge Miamba 2020 Shiraz which IMO punched above its weight.
Maggie’s burnt fig ice cream to finish, very good and happy to suspend the low carb operations for this given the stresses of the last 24 hours. Really hit the spot.

Though when i was quite regularly flying AA I found the AA crews quite often to be better than QF. We flew quite a bit AA F long haul. I remember the best FA I have had as an easily remembered name-Marvel -on a JFK -LHR flight. And trans Pacific a purser from Hawaii -Danno. Now why would I remember that. ;)
I've always had good AA crew on international flights.

Things are showing tentative signs of normalising. 😲

QF945 BNE-PER right now. A pre-dinner drink (in a non-thimble glass 😜) and pretzel/almond pack (but as usual, mostly pretzels 😡). Peos Four Kings Cab Sav (Manjimup WA) - very respectable.

Meal choices: beef black bean thingy, barramundi thingy and some sort of salad.

But where’s the cheese? 😡 Some sort of sickly cake in a box and yet another one of those ghastly sickly sweet Lindt chocs . Pass…😡

QF72 SIN - PER

Menu (noting I snoozed, but woke up about 2 hours out and I'm pretty sure the Mushroom Aranchini was never served 🤣)

Champagne PDB but then didn't see the crew until 1:40 into the flight which was when entree and drinks were served.

I had the prawn salad and the perch

The last time I flew Per - Sin in QF J, 2019, they also didn't serve the pre-arrival snack. Maybe normal practice? I also notice that the standard of the side salad has not changed.

Righto, as lovely CSM Fiona collected my plate I mentioned how sad it was having no cheese. She said she thinks its return is imminent. 🤞🤞

Well, lo and behold she just rocked up with something that I think must have been her own. 🥲🥰

And the Peos cab sav continues to shine. A lovely lean, light textured style that’s not overtly fruity. I was surprised to see it at 14.5% ABV. Great with cheese. 🙂 (And a great thing to nurse mask-off on the 5h+ ride to PER. 😉😉😉😛)

I’ve driven past their vineyard many times during work and watched them transition into wine production from being potato and vege growers (which they still may do).

I asked Fiona to give my cake, choccy and Maggie Beer ice cream to a kid or kids down the back. Done. 👍
