Qantas Delays/Cancellations

The 28 November QF500 (0600 hours SYD - BNE, B738 VH-VXC) took off at 0813 so an 0831 hours arrival, 121 late is predicted. The 0630 hours following flight, QF502 was in the sky at 0819 so it should be about 95 late arriving in BNE with VH-VYI.

QF565 (0620 hours early morning SYD - PER) took off at 0820. It has B738 VH-VXG.

QF1562 (0650 hours CBR up to BNE) has B717 VH-NXI, It was airborne at 0818 with likely arrival at 0852, 77 late.

The 0615 hours SYD down to MEL, QF471 (VH-XZI) took off at 0833 so arrival has become a suggested 0955, 125 late.

The pattern is two hour (plus) delays (and numerous cancellations).

Also, be aware that QF431 SYD-MEL 12 00 service will be operated by a 747.
It will operate back to Sydney as Q442 MEL-SYD 15 00 service.

QF411 SYD-MEL 7 30 service (VH-EBB) A332 did not take off until 10 06, 156 min behind. It landed at 11 14, 129 min tardy.
QF415 SYD-MEL 8am service (VH-VZC) departed at 9 51, 111 late. It landed at 11 03, 88 behind schedule.
QF417 SYD-MEL 8 30 service (VH-EBC) A332 took off at 10 26, 116 late. It arrived at 11 32, 87 min late.
QF609 BNE-MEL 7 10 service (VH-VXC) left at 9 30am, 140 tardy. Landed at 12 32, 122 behind.
QF676 ADL-MEL 8 55 service (VH-VYE) did not leave until 11 01, 126 behind. Landed at 12 34, 109 late.

Continuing with Wednesday 28 November, QF1512, the 0845 hours CBR - SYD short hop (B717 VH-NXE) departed at 1250 so arrival should be at about 1345 instead of 0940. While few can change their modes at short notice without penalty, a better day to travel by NSWTrainLink, drive or (if one must) suffer a road coach.

It is rare to see a QF A333 on a MEL to SYD but VH-QPC is operating 'the 416', the scheduled 0830 departure that took off at 1216 for a suggested 1402 hours arrival, 247 minutes past the schedule.

On this very wet day, there may be reasons such as waiting for connecting passengers but the TG morning flight from SYD to BKK is almost on time while QF23, again, is not, having departed at 1146 hours (76 minutes late). Arrival should be 1720, 70 late so this will mean some delay for redeye QF24 back down to SYD.

The 0930 hours SYD - HKG, QF127, departed 88 late. It should be at its destination gate at 1658, 68 late.

QF129 (1055 hours morning SYD up to PVG) pushed back at 1229 so its arrival is predicted as 2005 hours, 95 late.

The 1225 hours SYD - MNL (QF19) departed at 1326 so arrival at 1813 will be 43 late. This will delay QF20 although not as much as last night.

QF107 (1335 hours SYD up to PEK) has A332 VH-EBR. It was airborne at 1432 so arrival should be at about 2245 tonight, half an hour tardy.

The 1225 hours lunchtime (WA time) PER - SIN, QF71 is expected to depart 75 minutes late, probably because its A333 is delayed crossing the Nullabor or Great Australian Bight.

Longhaul QF27, the B744 from SYD to SCL is predicted to depart 100 minutes late at 1430.

QF7 from SYD to DFW should depart 35 late at 1515 hours mid afternoon.

The 1550 hours second of the day from SYD up to HKG, QF117 looks like it will depart at 1700.

SYD to HNL QF3 tonight has been delayed an hour until 2025 in its projected departure. One problem for flights like this is that it will have booked connecting passengers from other Australian airports as not all want to travel on JQ (via MEL) to HNL.

UPDATE: QF27 from SYD to SCL was in the sky at 1502 with B744 VH-OJU.

In more on Wednesday 28 November 2018, QF430 (1200 'high noon MEL up to SYD with relatively rate for this route A333 VH-QPC) was in the sky at 1442. Arrival should be at 1552 hours, 147 minutes past the timetable.

The 1130 hours SYD down to MEL, QF423 took off at 1440 with B738 VH-VXQ. Indicated arrival is 1555 this afternoon, 170 minutes late.

QF520, the 1100 northbound SUD - BNE (VH-XZL) is worse with takeoff at 1436 meaning arrival at 1449 predicted, 189 minutes tardy.

The 1220 hours SYD across to ADL (QF1557, B717 VH-NXQ) was in the sky at 1402. Arrival at gate should be at 1518 hours, 83 late.

In more QF431 12 00 service (VH-OEB - 747) departed 14 51, 171 tardy. Expected arrival is 15 59, 144 late. If as predicted, this will delay QF442 15 00 MEL-SYD service.

A good move but this alone will not eliminate the backlog of passengers left (to use a bad pun) high and dry by today's many cancellations.

In more, QF153 MEL-AKL 12 15 service departed at 14 15 (120 late), arrival is expected at 19 27 (92 late). This will have a flow effect on QF158 AKL-MEL leg which is now with a revised departure of 20 50, 95 behind. VH-EBC is the aircraft.

QF433 SYD-MEL (VH-VYL) 12 30 service departed at 15 30, 182 min behind. Arrival expected at 16 45, 165 behind.

If your flight out of MEL to SYD has been cancelled and you have not received a new booking there are no seats until tomorrow afternoon

The day train departs at 0830; the night train at 1950 hours ex Southern Cross. Sleepers must be booked via the NSWTrainLink call centre, but seats are bookable online. The computer selects which seat so if you don't like that, telephone 13 22 32 from 0700 to 2200 hours daily. Unlike the airlines, no extra charge for telephone bookings, but quicker to book online. You cannot change the seat number online (unfortunately).

Showing how the QF air delays are continuing into the evening, QF442, the 1500 hours MEL - SYD took off at 1805 with B744 VH-OEB, a rarity on this (or except SYD - PER recently) any Oz domestic route. Arrival should be at 1916, 171 minutes tardy.

As so often occurs when there are major delays, higher frequency routes can be a lottery as to which flight gets a passenger to his or her destination first. QF446, the 1600 hours MEL - SYD (B738 VH-VXR) took off at 1758 with a 1908 hours arrival (103 minutes tardy) estimated.

QF564, the trranscon 1050 from PER to SYD was not too bad in trying circumstances, taking off at 1150 late this morning WA time with B738 VH-VZO. Its arrival looks to be 1843, 43 late.

My flight was one of the only ones going.

Currently typing this somewhere over Central West NSW as we wait for clearance into Sydney.

In further on 28 November, QF483, the 1515 hours SYD down to MEL (B738 VH-VZA) took off at 1835. Expected arrival is 1940 hours, 170 late.

QF545 (B738 VH-VZE, the 1605 hours BNE - SYD that was airborne at 1732) should arrive at 1946, 66 late.

More today, QF923 CNS-SYD (VH-EBJ) departed 14 10, 130 late, arrived 17 54, 114 tardy.
QF843 DRW-SYD (VH-VYF) left until 16 36, 166 min behind schedule. Arrival is expected about 20 09, 144 tardy-

It will be interesting to see if most of the evening/late services get cancelled or if curfew is flexible today.

As noted a few posts above, around ounchtime on 28 November the 1550 hours SYD - HKG (QF117) was expected to depart 70 late but A333 VH-QPC ended up departing at 1921. Arrival should be 190 minutes late at 0125 hours on Thursday 29. As a result, QF118, the 2325 hours ex HKG is optimistically predicted to commence pushing back at 0220 for SYD arrival at 1445, 160 minutes behind schedule.

As anticipated, already seeing some evening cancellations.
QF499 SYD-MEL 21 00 service
QF497 SYD-MEL 22 05 service

QF478 MEL-SYD 18 45 service
QF462 MEL-SYD 19 00 service
QF464 MEL-SYD 19 30 service
QF466 MEL-SYD 19 45 service

QF559 BNE-SYD 19 55 service

I guess we'll have to await and see if the 20 00 and 20 30 MEL-SYD and SYD-MEL services make it out.

QF9 Per-Lhr badly delayed. 40 pax offloaded and ALL bags also offloaded due to forecast bad weather in London and the extra fuel required. Crew also out of hours.

The perils of the direct flight in winter starts......

Edit: Flight now been delayed for 25 hours. Leaving Tuesday night.

It will be interesting to see how these issues impact Eu261. Bad weather is one thing that can be considered 'extraordinary circumstances', but if the weather only affects the QF9/10 because of its range/distance, EU261 exemptions may not be applicable. It's likely QF10 pax could ordinarily be reaccommodated on other carriers, given how few pax there are on the flight. But at peak periods around Chirstmas when all other carrier are full it might be more difficult.

I have alway thought PER-LHR to be a “fairweather” route.

There really isn’t any way to do a “splash and dash” because unlike QF8 any such fuel diversion or any diversion causes the crew to be out of hours. So they can’t even drop into say DXB, SIN, FRA for an hour or 2 - wherever they land there they will stay until the pilots/crew are rested. It’s not really a route that would interest me.

Only possible exception is SIN - if a 787 crew is prepositioned to take over
