Qantas Delays/Cancellations

While there was a brief thunderstorm during Tuesday 13 December's afternoon, weather in eastern Australia (SYD MEL etc) was generally far better than yesterday.

Punctuality has recovered for many flights, but remains variable.

One oddity is that A332 VH-EBG was (as noted above) three hours late coming in from PER to SYD this morning. It must have had maintenance today as its next flight was QF655, the 1855 hours that in almost a carbon copy hasn't become airborne until 2224 hours, so arrival is suggested on Wednesday 14 at about 0001 hours. If it is back on a redeye ex PER, that will be badly late into SYD tomorrow morning.

Despite today's better weather, another carbon copy of yesterday is that on Tuesday 13 December, QF499 (2200 hours SYD-MEL) and QF25 (2135 hours SYD-HND) have yet to take off.

QF25 (2135 hours SYD-HND) have yet to take off
QF25 is being operated by QPB, which operated last night’s after curfew departure of QF3 (and the delayed return QF4), so unfortunately tonight’s delay is a flow on impact from yesterday’s Sydney storm.

On Wednesday 14 December 2022, QF2 (A388 VH-OQJ) from SIN to SYD is expected to arrive at 0722 hours, 72 minutes late.

QF1 on Tuesday 13, the 1705 hours SYD-SIN-LHR did not depart, and is delayed until an expected 1900 hours tonight, with the SIN stop expected from 2355 to Thursday 15's 0125 hours and eventual LHR arrival at 0745 hours, 1530 minutes late. This means the unusual situation of today's flight probably departing Sydney before yesterday's.

So QFi flights to LHR are back to chaos, just before Christmas.

The delayed QF25 from last night (SYD-HND) should arrive at 0703 hours this morning, 98 minutes behind schedule.

A332 VH-EBK on QF36, the SIN-MEL redeye arrived this morning 40 minutes past the timetable at 0650 hours.

A333 VH-QPJ as QF20 overnight from MNL to SYD is expected to be at its gate at 0744 hours, 89 late.

QF51 on Tuesday (A333 VH-QPA), the 1105 hours BNE-SIN did not take off until 1618 in the afternoon, arriving SIN at 2159 hours, 294 minutes late. It formed QF82, the 2005 hours mid evening SIN-SYD redeye that was airborne at 0005 hours this morning. SYD arrival is predicted as 1028 hours, 198 minutes tardy.

'The 67' from SYD to India's BLR (the 0930 hours) is not expected to push back until 1300 this afternoon.

The SIN-PER QF72 has a very good record of being on time or early but this morning A332 VH-EBL pulled in to its gate at 0104 hours, 39 late.

Wednesday 14's QF71, the 1125 hours, is expected to depart three hours late from PER bound for Singapore.

B789 VH-ZNE on QF63 (SYD-JNB) arrived 32 minutes late at 1507, while the return QF64 is similar, arrival in SYD this arvo being predicted for 1404 hours, 39 late.

Good situation report. Im one of the pax deplaned from QF1 after we had sat on the tarmac at Mascot. We waited several hours while the engineers did their thing. Amusing and quite droll commentary from fellow passengers in premium economy and biz, at some part of the captains updates he indicated we were powering down and then trying a reboot. Some funny chat about Roy and Moss from the IT Crowd …. Have ya tried turning it off and on again? We’ll try again today. Good luck to us all. I’ve had rotten experiences with Qantas all this year, this simply is the imperfect end to a long, long relationship with Qantas and I feel that it’s time to say goodbye.

May I ask, when did they decide to cancel the flight and where were (most) pax accomodated overnight?

Ask away fella, decision to finally abandon any hope of getting the bird in the air was around half ten last night. So, it was after midnight by the time we all had fetched our luggage and received taxi vouchers and hotel paperwork etc and it looked like quite a few of us were agisted at Sofitel Darling Harbour.

"Agisted". As in "fed and watered" (typically livestock, so appropriate for cattle class peasants but not for rareified you).:)

Great report, especially given that your post count is so low (although you'd 'grate' your teeth'). At least you can still raise a smile during adversity.

Many are wedded to QF due to their businesses, or especially government agencies, automatically booking them on this airline but for the life of me if one is paying privately, or have a choice, QFi (and JQi) would be at close to to the bottom of my list, perhaps only higher than a few selected low cost operators plus airlines such as MH I won't fly any longer for other reasons.

I hope you get away tonight.

Given your excellent insights, please feel free to post again as it tells many what "really" goes on, rather than just a statement made that an aircraft was delayed. People like to know why.

SYD looks to be down to one runway, perhaps due to significant (but far from record) winds?

This is resulting even during the offpeak at 1330 hours in inbound aircraft holding.

It won't help punctuality this afternoon.

QF437 (1100 hours SYD-MEL, B738 VH-XZM) took off at about 1350, so hugely late.

The 1125 hours short hop NTL-SYD, QF1481 (Q300 VH-SBI) took off at 1330 hours with arrival on apron suggested as 1406 hours, 111 minutes late. Quicker to travel by train from most parts of Newcastle.

As an example of departure delays in Sydney, QF995, the 1325 hours SYD-HBA (B738 VH-VZC) appeared to be eighth in the takeoff queue as at 1404 hours, so it's at least 45 minutes late, a minor delay compared with many other flights.

Continuing with what seems to be wind-related delays in Sydney, QF81, the 1230 hours SYD-SIN (A333 VH-QPC) took off at 1354, so it's better than some other flights. Arrival should be at about 1853 tonight local time, 63 minutes behind the eight ball.

QF19, the 1225 hours SYD-MNL had yet to take off as at 1422 hours, though it was off blocks, so is likely to be approaching two and a half hours late into MNL this evening.

In Sydney, the north-south runways appear to be reopening at about 1430 hours on Wednesday 14 December, but not before many delays were caused.

Appreciate your comments. Here at the business lounge being feted by the lovely Qantas staff. The CEO is, in my opinion, a right old putz but the staff are mint. The Sofitel was a very pleasant pub to hold up in and we were looked after very well. I spent three hours last night and this morning reconfiguring flights out of LHR and finessing Qantas booked accommodation in Dublin. This latter part of the business is where QF do themselves absolutely no good at all. Call centres are hopeless. The bane of my life with Qantas this year. These guys just do not get it. Which airlines are offering superior service? Answers please

Gargoyle, QF's flight status suggests your amended departure tonight will occur at 1900 hours, 1555 minutes late.

I am surprised you are at SYD QFi J lounge as I'd have thought you might only check in from say 1530 or 1600 hours.

What time did the road coach (bus) pick you up? Could you have travelled to the airport later by train from Wynyard/Town Hall/Central if you'd so desired?

Did you have breakfast included this morning, and your choice of (if desired) a Queen bedded room even as a traveller on one's own?

QF67, the 0930 hours SYD-BLR (A332 VH-EBP) was showing early this morning, as noted above, as four hours late but it eventually became airborne at 1458 hours. Arrival should be at approximately 2054 hours, 309 minutes tardy. QF68 back down to SYD will be similarly delayed.

VH-EBA on QF41 (1355 hours SYD-CGK) isn't as bad, taking off at 1505 mid afternoon for suggested at gate arrival of 1817 hours, 47 minutes late.

QF19 to MNL from SYD was in the sky at 1450 so arrival at 1938, 128 late is the estimate.

Let’s work backward; huge room with a bed so big it has its own postcode. 20th floor room with big, big, windows offering lovely views of the precinct. No bus, we were handed scads of cab charge vouchers and used them.
Bugger travelling from Central etc on trains. Nah, sleep in then leisurely (included) breakfast and afterward a disinterested stroll in the flaneur style. Arrived here for check-in and the lovely manager Jessica stuffed my hand with pre-paid credit cards, pointed to the herd at the trough and bade me go and leave her be for one hour and eat and drink among the hoi polloi then come back to be whizzed through check-in and security and led upstairs to the lounge.
Nice. Clean. Uncomplicated and I smelt pity.
Now I’m working on claiming a refund for unused accommodation (did I mention the kaput A380 from yesterday?) in Dublin booked on the qantas app, a vote of thanks to the lovely Joanne out front of the business lounge who is super helpful, scooper dooper funny and exactly the personification of why we’re rusted on clients for Qantas.

I am sorry to hear all this but at least you got a nice room and the ground staff (real human assets of Qantas do what they can).

Must take a few days for QFi to get the schedule back in order with an A380 being delayed by 27 hours and now two of them flying up to Singgers tonight. Certainly not ideal that close to holiday season and let‘s see what flow on effect this creates, especially on the LAX route.

Good luck in Dublin and have a safe flight!

Indeed: the Wednesday 14 December QF2 (2040 local time at LHR to SIN) is delayed, in theory, to 0945 hours on Thursday 15 (i.e. 2045 hours AEDT tomorrow evening) with eventual SYD arrival suggested as 1900 hours on Friday 16, 650 minutes late.

On FR24, IGargoyle's QF1D is not displaying. This can mean it's blocked by buildings, but often it's a bad sign as it suggests a departure is not imminent. With it allegedly departing in 27 minutes at 1900 hours, that time is fairly close.

UPDATE: QF1D (if we can 'name' it that) has been further put back to 1930 hours ex SYD with an unrealstic one hour stay in SIN from 0025 to 0125 hours and proposed LHR arrival on Thursday 15 still at 0745. The SIN departure and LHR arrival may require adjustment.

B789 VH-ZNG has had an interesting day.

It arrived in MEL on Wednesday 14 December at 0822, 22 late as QF94 from LAX. Next trip was empty flight QF6002 taking off from Tullamarine at 1425 hours, arriving SYD at 1531 hours.

It's now operating badly delayed QF27, the 1235 hours lunchtime SYD to distant SCL that was airborne at 1727. Suggested at gate arrival is 1547 hours mid afternoon, 292 minutes behind schedule, guaranteeing that QF28 back will be delayed as it's meant to push back at 1340.
