Qantas domestic economy meals

I take it that’s one of your regular little attempts at ironic humour.
No irony here, the pizza wasn't too bad and compared to the usual chicken or beef "thing" I receive on QF domestic flights at least it had some bite to it.
The only thing I can’t see in that box are the bits of undigested carrot. Disgusting.
It tastes better than it looks, although it's American style pizza versus normal pizza (i.e. the pizza is as thick as a piece of bread). Pizza came out pretty hot from the oven (the roof of my mouth is still recovering from that bit).

I’ve noticed on the intra WA now on 1600s you get a hot item, prior to that was corn chips and salsa. Must be a permanent change.

Brekky service seems to have stepped up too, full Brekky box (frittata, sausage , sauce and spinach) instead of the usual quiche/Fritsta/Wrap/fritter rotation.

Wines have improved drastically recently too.

Some positive changes seem to be happening 🤯

Honestly traveling with Qantas a few times this year, I’ve been really disappointed with the food offered on their planes, especially to the offerings provided pre-Covid.

I remember traveling between bris/mel/syd and receiving a hot boxed meal (eg stir-fry noodles, curry etc) in 2019.
Although I hate the presentation of eating out of a boxed meal, at least it was something to eat.

This year doing the same syd/bris/mel routes plus a trip to cairns, i was dissapointed to receive a snack (aka ‘refreshment’) on all flights such as crackers, biscuits, arracini balls, bite sized fritters etc.
I think that at minimum a salad/wrap/sandwich + beverages should be provided, with proper hot meal in the evenings.

Not everyone has time or has access to the lounge, hence willing to pay a premium to access a better product on-board.

If Qantas is worried about wastage, allow users to pre-select meals, or opt out of meals for bonus ff points/status credits etc.

With virgin going more low-cost, it gives Qantas little incentive to improve their current offering imo.
I’m hoping with the recent brand damage/media spotlight that Qantas improves their food offering in both Y/J domestic & economy,

Though given a choice, I’m not sure why anyone would pay a sometimes substantial premium flying Qantas, especially as Rex provides a very comparable product currently in Y.

All 737s got USB charging when they were installed with WIFI where it was an aircraft without seat back IFE back in 2018.
IIRC the USB port on the 737s is located under the seat between the adjacent seats. With that being said, I am disappointed that they don't provide an A/C power port. I mean, if AA can do it, so can QF!

A recent burst of flying QF Y and here is the grub. Note that the "times" are according to the old days meal times; nothing to do with what they are now (seems everything is a refreshment now).

BNE-TSV, operated by Alliance, E90.

Breakfast: Egg and bacon ciabatta.

TSV-CNS-TSV, operated by Eastern for QantasLink, DH4.

Refreshments: Blueberry and granola slice to CNS; Chocolate and coconut bar back to TSV.

TSV-SYD, operated by Alliance, E90.

Refreshment: Roast beef and mustard finger sandwiches.

Apparently, a cheese and chive sandwich option was available for vegetarians. I suspect there was even enough leftover sandwiches if people wanted seconds, but it wasn't proactively offered.

SYD-BNE, operated by Qantas, B738.

Dinner: butter chicken puff pastry.

Reminds me of a larger and less crispy curry puff done Western puff pastry pie style.

Interesting trying to eat this neatly without implements. It can work, but not necessarily straightforward.

What also got me is that it isn't overly salty (contains < 400mg sodium per 100g product) but still tasty. (Doesn't mean I would eat more than one of these)

Taste wise, there's not much to criticise across the board. But all of these are definitely refreshments.
  • Snack to go with your drink? Oh yes.
  • A bite to tide you over between proper meals? Likely fine; will stave off or reduce the pains of starvation.
  • A meal? Heck no.
I do largely appreciate these foods over say a packet of chips, salty pretzels or mixed nuts.

I am very surprised at the quality quantity of yesterdays J class meal Perth to Melbourne which came with some obscure red wine the name I cannot recall but won awards and was not too shabby! This is under V. Hudsons steward ship will it last?

I could not eat the whole lot. Oh I ordered Chicken Salad.

I think the catering would have been planned and ordered looooong in advance. This is prolly still under AJ’s stewardship.

Wrong thread for J meals.

Yesterday's QF546 from SYD to BNE feature "snack" samosas:

To say it leaves much to be desired is the understatement of the day.

My neighbour took a photo with my phone of her chicken salad, which she said was refreshing.

That's probably the best looking 'meal' this whole thread. Did it come with 'cutlery' or did they have to ask? Similarly, did you have to ask for 'cutlery' with yours?
