Qantas domestic economy meals

Had the veg pizza SYD-BNE last Sat night, was quite nice although very difficult and messy to extract from the cardboard box. Plane was only 25% full so the flight attendants came around with a second serve of the pizza. Also managed to down three bottles of red wine. For a second there, I thought I should fly Qantas more often.

That's strange -- I had a hot breakfast (in a cardboard box) on a QF ADL-BNE flight operated by Alliance a couple of weeks ago. No complaints from me.

On a recent flight MEL to CNS, our whole food service in Qantas economy was one chocolate brownie and a drink, a flight of 3hr 20 min.

Now our flight was delayed by 50 min, so we ended up arriving in CNS about 2pm. I understand that meals are not served on flights of less than 3 1/2 hours outside mealtimes, but this is ridiculous for a supposed full service airline.

The thing here is that on both Jetstar and Virgin you can purchase food on board. So in my mind Qantas is fast losing out to the other airlines. Needless to say there was a lot of hungry grumbling people on our aircraft.
The business class meals served by Qantas on domestic flights are inedible so I hate to think what's served in economy. 🤢

Veg pizza tonight BNE-SYD (and here’s a picture or two).

Blotting paper to soak up a few wines and cheeky margarita in the QF J lounge free flight.

Someone in QF catering is probably having a chuckle with “Yummy Karma” after VegoMealGate a few months ago. Now we all go meat free…

My “snacks” heading home on Friday.
Salsa on the Dash 8 QantasLink, sausage rolls on the SYD-BNE leg.
No lunch so I knocked down the CC's and salsa.
Had to make haste from Gate 16 to Gate 2 (flight meant to be boarding) only to find it wasn’t. Factor in another 30 mins to board and then thanks to Sydney weather we then waited over an hour to take off.
On BNE-SYD I was actually starving by the time the sausage rolls came out and pretty much inhaled them. Not as good as the pies but still pretty good.
Meant to be back in BNE at 8:30pm, didn't land until after 10pm

QF0440 MEL-SYD on Monday 8/4. A330-200
Lunchtime flight so fittingly we got a sandwich... Sorry, 2/3 of a sandwich. (What they did with the other third I don't know). Overall roast beef, caramelised onions and cream cheese are a pretty good combo, but I wouldn't have minded the missing third
Qantasnomics:
1 x 2/3 sandwich + 1 x 2/3 sandwich = 3 x sandwiches.
Every little bit helps towards the exec bonuses & ACCC fines…

Thursday 10/5/24 QF655 Syd-Per

Nephew is in Perth for the Freo & Swans Match and because the plane was not full, was offered both meals.

Cold Chicken and Pasta Salad

The hot meal was Beef, Potatoes, Corn and Beans

He said both were very tasty.

But the winner was, after a very long hiatus, the return of the Weiss Ice Cream

I did the PER-SYD and return run last weekend.

Chose the beef on the way over and quickly regretted it. Think braised beef in Masterfood's BBQ sauce. 🤢 Veg was okay.

Elected to have the chicken salad on the way back - I got 2 1/2 slivers of chicken, my travelling companion got 5. The pasta was okay, but strangely dense... still, a lot better than the beef choice.

My take is it wwould be dire travelling regularly and getting these two choices. Other's MMV of course.

QF733 SYD-ADL, 28/03/24 - was offered a pumpkin and carrot frittata, but having had my fill of egg-based breakfasts on my incoming Emirates flight (something I'm not a huge fan of in the first place but all apparently Emirates can offer for breakfast in Economy, but that's a rant for another time and place), I instead opted for a far less time appropriate snack choice of a bag of soy cracker snack mix and a can of Coke No Sugar as I'd only managed about three hours of sleep on the flight from Dubai. Bottles of water were later offered. No photos alas, as I figured the snack mix was not particularly noteworthy.

QF2254, ADL-MGB, 29/03/24 - was offered a bottle of water, then a sandwich (well, two thirds of a sandwich, that's a neat cost cutting trick!) - from what I could see there was the chicken with spinach and tomato relish option which I had, and a cheese and something option - then had a can of Coke No Sugar. Apparently, there was a surplus of sandwiches as the crew came through and offered seconds (I declined) followed by little chocolate koalas were passed out for what I assume were Easter reasons, but looking at it now Happy Holidays could imply they were Christmas leftovers! ;)
There was a big jar of those Koalas at the coffee counter in the PER J lounge last Thursday... I assumed they were low rent compounded chocolate, but really enjoyed the one I snaffled later on mid flight. If I'd known how tasty they were, I'd have hoarded multiple.

Nephew flew home on the red eye to Sydney from Perth on QF.

Clearly cheaper to operate only one lounge for the limited late night departures.
But it also explains the reason why the pizza oven's are turned off.
The hot meal distributed were the rolls.

Where'd your nephew fly out of? Running one lounge makes sense if there's little to no demand. On the weekends Qantas Canberra consolidates and only opens the J lounge to all the usual suspects after the busy Saturday morning patch. Pity though, the QP is airside with a nicer view.

Not an uncommon occurance.

Not sure what the connection to pizza oven service ending you are drawing is?

A friend of mine did fly a redeye out of PER last week and said they did serve Puzza until around 11 iirc.
