The staff could be mis-informed

OT, but confident pronouncements that I have been given over the years by QF telephone staff have included "Qantas will never get premium economy on its international flights" and "the takeover bid will be announced as successful soon".

And I have absolutely no confidence in the ability to earn SCs when ticketed on EK

Totally agree.

Ok, I am confused. Are you presently able to book a flight to Europe on Qantas for say June next year that goes via Dubai ? The Qantas website says in an update on Oct 4 that this will happen for all flights after 31 March 2013 booked now but Dubai does not seem to be an option when booking. What am I missing?

You can't, at this point, book a flight to Dubai, but you can book flights that go via Dubai.

......because at this stage Qantas does not have rights to fly passengers to or from Dubai, but transiting through Dubai doesn't require Government approval.

A Travel Agent can book you those flights, I currently have a booking for next august with a stopover in DXB

DXB has been removed from the pre-populated destinations online.

Presumably because of those like me who discovered you could book flights and awards to DXB (not as a stopover), and QF does not have the traffic rates to sell these yet.

Thank you for your replies.

Perhaps a question that no one can answer but if you book an flight today direct on Emirates to Europe for say June 2013 what would the likelyhood be of such a flight qualifying for QFF points in due course if and when the Emirates - Qantas deal goes through.

Just wondering if you booked before the deal is offical for a time after the deal would the date you booked likely to be an issue.

There won't be an issue earning QFF points, however having had it booked under an EK code means you probably won't earn SC...

There may be some earning limitations based on booking class though. We won't know the full story until Qantas publishes an earnings table for Emirates flights.

should have written "There won't** be an issue earning QFF points, however having had it booked under an EK code means you probably won't earn SC.."

**Frequent Flyer points are earned on all eligible booking classes.

Thanks for the informatiom. It will be business class when I book it. Just that the price saving on Emirates is huge over Qantas. Kind of makes you think twice about chasing the SC's.

Might wait a while yet and see what happens.

For our travel to Eastern Europe in July 2013 the prices on Emirates for business class are excellent. We are traveling with SQ to Singapore then doing a round trip business class with Emirates Singapore Dubai Europe return to Singapore then an ASA business seat with Qantas to Adelaide. Travel is much more affordable once you eliminate Australia from the equation.

That's usually the case. OW alternatives being AY from BKK or CX from MNL.

AY from SIN can work out quite well sometimes too, and they also operate to HKG. CX has good fares from TPE as well, but it's a little harder getting there in the first place.

In addition to this, the recent handling of my re-accomodation of SIN-SYD flights in F was frankly appalling. "Mr ComeFlyWithMe, we've downgraded you to business and provided you with a refund. There are no other options available to you. Enjoy your flight."

Exactly the issue I had. There are worse things in the world than being downgraded, ok that's life, but my expectation would be at least some semblance of good customer service, apologising for the interruption during a working day, maybe offering another option and a general apology full stop. The customer service team were acting like some other organisation had enforced these changes upon them!

I wonder if EK will lthink about going to Belgrade now that QR is launching that route...

I wouldn't mind a codeshare to Serbia (my next big Euro adventure destination) but mainly in a big ol' geeky way it would be cool to see a QF flight number there again after 25ish years (even if only a codeshare flight number!) Yeah, plane-nerd I know :)

SYD-DXB opened up again today:
Y $2058 rtn
J $9617 rtn  (you have got to be kidding...!)
F $14067 rtn  (see above)

Let's hope these aren't the final fares as I'm struggling to see why you would book QF on this city pair when EK et. al. can be had for much less...

F to LHR is only $13,088, so take a weekend excursion...

Those Prices are absurd. For J for 2 people we paid less than $8000 for Sin-Dubai-Istanbul, Venice-Dubai-Singapore! With Emirates. Which included the Chauffeur service for each stop.

I would take a guess that QF doesn't actually want anyone to buy any fares to DXB. I can imagine it would be quite difficult for them to have anyone getting a DXB-LHR fare or vice versa to fill that empty seat.

But isn't Dubai the new Singapore? Might take a few years to change that I guess. While I appreciate the cultural issues involved in travelling to Dubai we are really looking forward to seeing it. But maybe, unlike Singapore, it isn't a place you might want to keep revisiting.
