Re: Singapore QF/BA lounge new changes

Dubai is filled with Arabs and that is a problem seems to be the underlying sentiment.

I think your right, but those who have an issue won't say, so look for every little reasons to complain. Personally I have no intentions of stopping in Dubai on my way to Europe (just because I see no reason to stop, not because of a dislike for the place or the people), just like after the first few times I stopped stopping in Singapore too.

Re: Singapore QF/BA lounge new changes

I agree with you completely! Singapore is incredibly dull and certainly has some extreme laws e.g. littering and chewing gum comes to mind. I don't see how it is any different to Dubai at all.
And yet some of us think it is a great idea not have dog poop all over place and better still not to have step on chewing gum, sit on chewing gum and get it stuck on clothes or worst of all touch the used chewing gum when it is stuck on benches, under seats, under tables etc.

Yeah I dont disagree but you seem to have missed the point.

Comparing Singapore and Dubai?

Sorry there is no comparison and we have been through this particular discussion in the past and nothing has changed since then....

When did you last visit Dubai?

It all boils down to personal choice which is fine. I personally don't like either place, but don't really care as a transit point. But the discussion here came from some of the illogical (or should I say irrational) arguments that people have against Dubai, when if your going to nit pick Singapore, based on THOSE arguments is actually not too different. The other funny thing is I don't see people complaining that Virgin Aus fly to Abu Dhabi even though Dubai is in the same country. But guess this is digressing from what THIS thread is about.

The context was different. VA didn't fly to Singapore as stopover for their Europe flights, then change the hub to Dubai. But the outcome is certainly similar.

BTW give me AUH over DXB as an airport to connect through any day

Cheers skip

If you can stay in the A380 concourse for transits, DXB for me thanks

excellent post ajw with some very good points made.

In an act of the lamest rebellion every, I once jay walked in Singapore... almost to say that I've done it LOL

Re: Singapore QF/BA lounge new changes

Just mulling over the implications of EK dropping F
Emirates plans two-class Airbus A380, dropping first class suites - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller

As the article notes, if dropping F was all that happened that would make EK the first airline to run two-class A380s. One obvious way to use the spare real estate would be to introduce a Y+ cabin. That would better match EK's offering to that of QF, as well as JL and possibly others.

Cheers skip

EK are not planning on dropping first. What they are planning is having some aircraft on certain routes without first. There is a difference.

Yes the context is different, however the arguments are that Dubai is a bad transit because homosexuality is illegal, certain prescription and over the counter medications are illegal, it is hot etc etc etc. These same issues DO apply to Virgin because they fly through the same country yet we don't hear it.

So really as I mentioned above the core issue is one of personal choice, so maybe if people can own their choice as just that their choice and preference, rather than use irrational arguments why Qantas is wrong then we might get somewhere.

In my case, and I have said this before I personally don't like Singapore, happy to transit the airport, also happy to visit and do business there if need be, but as a stopover point to Europe I will give it a miss. Same too with Dubai, send me there for business no problem, but even though I have never set foot in the place I have no desire to stop en-route to Europe. Not because of some irrational arguments, but simply because I don't see what value there is in a stop there. The other thing is at the end of the day I still have choice. If I want to fly to Europe, London in particular I can with Qantas and a dozen other choices. If I want to fly to Singapore I can again with Qantas and a few other choices. If I wan't to fly to London via Singapore then I can, just not with Qantas. But again as I have said before Qantas cannot be everything to everyone, they have to make the choice that they feel will provide the greatest return on their investment. That decision is for the board, and if I as a passenger don't like it I am free to make other arrangements.

I travelled through AUH with VA/EK and I was searched thoroughly at AUH on the way there. I was carrying over 40 Nurofen Plus tablets which were noticed in the search but nothing was said or done about it. I didn't know at the time they were banned until the comments popped up regarding the EK/QF alliance.

That's because in most cases they are reasonable about it.

But your story about not knowing before hand is a worry. Really before anyone goes anywhere they need to check what the laws of the country they are visiting with things like medication. The government even has a handy top ten things to do before travelling where this is covered.

Have you checked that link in the case of what you find worrying by chance, if you have you would notice that it states certain medicines but after navigating through four pages, it links to a non existent web page that should the specifics. I also note there is no mention of the issue with poppy seeds, while its unlikely one will be travelling with them it should be there.

I agree you should do your research, but the public servants responsible for the smart traveller website would appear to be not so smart when it comes to keeping data current!

They must have fixed it pretty fast, because when I click on travel advice, choose the UAE, click on health and then click on the link that links to what is and isn't allowed it goes to the same page you have linked. Unless of course you have gone a different path.
