Qantas FF and Woolworths create new loyalty alliance

Hmmm, this restriction of on QFF A/C per card is a bit of a trick. The more points in the one account the more options for awards are available. i.e. 3.7K points here and 4.5 K points there is not very useful, 8.2K will get a 1 way trip < 600 miles..

One could think of family transfers to amalgamate them, but one needs 5K point before you can do so and then you cannot transfer for another year.

I suppose it's to stop abuse of the system, but it will also help drive sales so members have to at least get to the threshold. It'll probably save Qantas in the long run, even though it looks bad. I think it's fair personally.

Had no worries signing up my mum, though it wouldn't take the 2nd line of our address, so I had to just enter the first line and change it through Qantas after the account was created.

I'm not exactly sure how this works but having discussed the free membership offered with a credit card, is seems there is some deal where the accountants have money changing hands for the free membership that is given out.

I don't doubt that, but I would also be surprised if Woolies were stumpring up the full $82.50

Thanks for the link. Notice that the QFF programme has '5.6m members'.

When they say 'above $30' does that mean if one spends $50 you get 50 pts or 20 pts?

One thinks the way it's been worded and given the distinct lack of clarity, it will be 20, not 50. Nicely glossed over.

It doesn't look like Dan Murphys will be included. Shame.

It's only launching with woolies, safeway, and woolies liquor. I think more will be added on over time, but not immediately. I dunno what the difference is with BWS, but it can't be that big that they'll only ever be the ones to earn with.

Shame about the "every $1 above $30 spend". Don't think I'll be getting anywhere anytime soon.

Guess we spend 'bout $150 pw week at woolies so should get 120 points + 150 with the c/c. 2 years and will nearly have enough pts for a one way to BKK ! Lucky we spend more than that (bought a new car the other day with QFF points awarded, will be interesting to see how many pts arrive).

I note that the T&C EXCLUDE earning points by buying Wish Cards....so no using this to pay for purchases elswhere...though the Website hints that the scheme may be extended to other Wollies Group businesses later.

No doubt one will still earn by paying with a Wish Card though ( as with Cash or CC payment).

This T&C cuts out the double dipping as it what Myer Have as well with their Myer One card.

It says:

One Qantas Frequent Flyer point for every $1 spent above $30 in the one transaction

I think that's fairly clear.

Now there is no excuse for any Australian Qantas FF account to lose points through inactivity.

I reckon neither woolies nor qantas is paying any real money for the "free memberships". I think it is just an accounting exercise.

When I got offered a free membership for the NAB direct QF CC change over, I rang both Qantas and NAB about using it for a family member. Both of them claimed the other party was paying for the membership. Hence they didn't really care if I put a different name on the application. But then they were also told me it wouldn't work because the other company would block it.

who knows real.

think i'll join all the kids up so they can get a return dom flight after their rtw at christmas

I had to unlink SWMBO's from mine to get our FF numbers assigned.

Online it was hard to find how to do this ...

My mums EDR card is linked to mine and I managed to link my QFF to my EDR before signing her up for her own QFF perfectly fine.

I guess this is why the program doesn't officially start for a while, there are bound to be kinks to work out.

So am I right in thinking that if my mother and father enrol in Everyday Rewards (free) then they can become QFF members (free) and can start earning QFF points from 22 June?

The free QFF membership would come in handy but I expect that I will get them to use only one Everyday Rewards card each week and we should be able to accumulate ~6,000 QFF points a year.

So after 10 years of shopping at Woolworths their son would be able to redeem a return WHY flight to BKK or even better wait 24 years and redeem a QF Oneworld award in WHY....

Hi there

I'm with JohnK on this one.

I am a courier and buy around $20 of fuel (at the current price) each morning, if i bought $40 of fuel evey 2 days this would give me 30 QFF points a week, so in 25 years i would have amassed 39000 points.(assuming i bought $40 of fuel 3 days a week for 52 weeks of the year)

I think i have the maths right

Yep the maths look right. That is exactly why I think this is going to have minimal impact on the availability of award flights. You just can't earn that many points if you aren't already earning QF points. If already a member this is a nice extra top up and in my case I'm going to use it to as activity to keep my wife's account going. As she doesn't fly. I might even register the kids, and spread the love, just to keep the FFP accounts active.

BTW: this now means the shopping will earn us 30000 points per year including the CC points. Provided SWMBO remains happy with the idea of using credit for shopping instead of cold hard cash money.

I didn't think this scheme would ever be a complete solution to free flights, it's an extra, to be used in addition to other earning opportunities, like actually flying.

I just hope I can spend enough on my groceries to make it at least a little useful.

This may be a great marketing ploy by both wooly's and QF in the begining. But given time if they don't deliver increases to classic award availability there will be a public backlash.

I will be doing everything in my power now to centralise to one FF program and to maintain as higher status as l can with one airline alliance. I want that airline not just to see l have the highest status, but also to see my true commercial value to them in hard currency. Something tells me in the future high status by itself won't be enough

With what is happening in the world of commercial aviation at the moment and into the distant future. Even true FF's will have to re-define there stratergys and how they work there memberships.

How is this different from the US airlines teaming up with the likes of Safeway?

I haven't noticed any great impact on FF redemptions there (I am UA 1K 2MM).
